Abstract

This study aims to describe the use of existential presupposition in the comment section of the Instagram account @jakarta.keras on a post concerning the corruption case of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga dated February 25, 2025. This research employs a qualitative descriptive approach from a pragmatic perspective. The data consist of utterances in the comment section that contain assumptions regarding the existence of particular entities. Data were collected using the observational method with the non-participatory observation technique, while data analysis was conducted using the pragmatic equivalent method through the Determining Element Sorting (Pilah Unsur Penentu/PUP) technique. The results indicate that existential presuppositions appear in various forms, which are classified into four categories: individual-based, group-based, social status–based, and ownership-relation–based existential presuppositions. These presuppositions are constructed through the use of definite noun phrases, proper names, plural forms, social status markers, and possessive markers. The findings demonstrate that Instagram comment sections function not only as a medium for expressing opinions but also as a space for constructing assumptions about the existence, identity, and social relations of actors involved in an event.

Abstract

Research on the inner conflict of the main character in Lenn Liu novel Rumah untuk Alie is important because literary works not only present stories, but also depict the complex psychological reality of humans. This study aims to describe the inner conflict of the main character in Lenn Liu novel Rumah untuk Alie using Sigmund Freud psychoanalytic theory. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques in the form of reading and note-taking. The results of the study indicate that the inner conflict of the main character in Lenn Liu novel Rumah untuk Alie includes three personality structures according to Sigmund Freud psychoanalytic theory, namely the id, ego, and superego. This conflict is dominated by the id aspect which is characterized by a strong drive to obtain affection and acceptance that is not fulfilled. In addition, the main character also shows various self-defense mechanisms in response to the psychological pressure he experiences. The findings of this study indicate that the inner conflict of the main character in Lenn Liu novel Rumah untuk Alie is closely related to the unfulfilled emotional needs, especially affection and acceptance in the family environment. This condition gives rise to psychological pressure that drives the main character to use various self-defense mechanisms as a form of self-protection.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and determine the conversational implicatures that arise in the comment section of Instagram @kementeriankegelapan, which discusses the issue of poisoning related to the “Makanan Bergizi Gratis” (Free Nutritious Food) program. The research method used is qualitative with a pragmatic approach, which not only examines the surface meaning but also considers the context of the utterances. The theory applied in this study is the theory of implicature, specifically conversational implicatures. The data were obtained from the comment section of Instagram @kementeriankegelapan on posts concerning the poisoning issue of MBG (Free Nutritious Food). Data collection was conducted using the listening method (Simak) and the advanced technique of listening-without-participating in speech (simak libat bebas cakap). Data analysis used the referential identity method (padan referensial) with the advanced technique of selecting defining elements (pilah unsur penentu). The findings show that there are eight pieces of data in the form of conversations, each containing an idea or topic that specifically responds to the satirical post uploaded on the @kementeriankegelapan account regarding the MBG food-poisoning issue. The topics include: Azab (punishment), Tunggangan di Akhirat (conveyance/punishment in the afterlife), shouting “Long live Jokowi!”, MBG as a way to alleviate poverty, color codes, preventing fights/gang fights, maggots, and “licking”/being servile. Each of these topics has its own implicature.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low skills of students in writing speech texts, especially in the aspects of structure, idea development, and language use. This study aims to describe the application of infographic media, analyze the differences in writing abilities between the experimental and control classes, and determine student responses. The study used a quantitative approach with an experimental design at SMP Negeri 55 Surabaya. The research sample consisted of class VIII B as the experiment and VIII A as the control. Data collection techniques included observation, pretest and posttest tests, and questionnaires. Data analysis used descriptive statistics and independent sample t-test. The results showed that the application of infographic media ran very well. There was a significant difference in the ability to write speech texts between the two classes, with an average posttest score of 78.2 for the experimental class and 69.5 for the control class (sig. 0.000 <0.05). Student responses were also in the very good category. Thus, infographic media is effective in improving students' speech writing skills.

Abstract

The development of social media has made slang a dominant part of the communication of Generation Z adolescents in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of digital slang, its influence on adolescent communication skills, and its implications for language education. The study employed a systematic literature review with a critical interpretivism approach and reference to the PRISMA guidelines. Data were obtained from scientific articles from 2020–2026 through Google Scholar, SINTA, DOAJ, and Semantic Scholar. The results indicate that slang has ambivalent impacts. On the one hand, intensive use of slang can reduce the ability to use formal language in academic contexts. On the other hand, slang also supports the formation of social identity, group solidarity, and communication flexibility through code-switching practices. This study found that awareness of communication context is a crucial factor in determining the impact of slang use on adolescent communication competencies. Therefore, Indonesian language learning needs to develop an approach based on register awareness and digital literacy to be more relevant to the realities of Generation Z communication.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the shortcomings in the Indonesian Language Textbook for Grade X Published by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Revised Edition 2023, in the form of inconsistent material presentation patterns, imbalance in linguistic and literary aspects, and unequal distribution of materials. This research study aims to assess the content suitability of the Indonesian Language Textbook for Grade X Published by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Revised Edition 2023. The method applied in this research is content analysis. The findings of this study indicate that chapters I to VI in the book have met or fulfilled the five indicators of content suitability according to Hartono (2016), although chapter IV is less suitable for the depth and breadth of material indicators because it does not include material on the structure of poetry. However, overall, this textbook is very suitable for use as a primary reference book in learning Indonesian. Thus, this study can be an evaluation material for textbook writers to complement the shortcomings in the next edition of new Indonesian language books.

Abstract

Curriculum development has become increasingly important in a globalized society as educational systems are required to respond to cultural changes, technological advancements, global interconnectedness, and emerging competencies. This study aimed to explore pre-service English teachers’ views on curriculum development in a globalized society. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design, this study analyzed pre-service English teachers’ responses through thematic analysis using an established coding framework. The findings revealed four overarching themes: Culture, Technology, Globalization, and 21st Century Skills. These themes demonstrate that participants viewed curriculum development as a multidimensional process involving cultural responsiveness, technological adaptation, global perspectives, and future-oriented competencies. The findings highlight that curriculum development in English Language Education extends beyond the organization of language content and involves consideration of broader learner needs and contemporary educational demands. This study contributes to English Language Education by emphasizing the importance of preparing future teachers who are able to understand and engage with dynamic curriculum development processes. The implications suggest that English teacher education programs and curriculum designers should consider interconnected cultural, technological, global, and twenty-first-century dimensions when developing relevant and responsive English learning curricula.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the intrinsic elements of the short story Surga Pertama by Zahro Syaquilla and to examine the character education values embodied in the work. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with the manuscript of Surga Pertama serving as the primary source of data. Data collection and analysis were conducted through a sociological approach to literature, focusing on the relationship between the literary structure and the social and educational values presented in the story. The intrinsic elements analyzed include theme, characterization, plot, setting, point of view, moral message, and language style. In addition, the study identifies several character education values represented through the events, characters, and messages in the short story, namely tolerance, creativity, independence, communicativeness, and responsibility. These values are reflected in the attitudes and actions of the characters as well as in the moral messages conveyed by the author. The findings are expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of how the intrinsic elements of the short story support and strengthen the delivery of character education values through literary expression.
