Abstract

The Chinese animated film Big Fish and Begonia (Dà Yú Hǎi Táng) features sacrifice as its main theme, constructed through symbols, dialogue, and cultural values. This study aims to describe the meaning of sacrifice in the film using Barthes's semiotics. This is a qualitative descriptive study, with data sources consisting of dialogues between characters representing the act and value of sacrifice. Data were collected through listening and note-taking techniques, then analyzed based on the stages of denotation, connotation, and myth. The results show that at the denotative level, the dialogues present information about death, resurrection, the terms of exchange, and the consequences of reviving Kun. At the connotative level, sacrifice is interpreted as moral responsibility, reciprocity, courage to defy fate, and the willingness to give up the most precious thing to save others. The symbols of Guyu, the will of heaven, the debt of life, the price that must be paid, and the eye as the most precious body part emphasize the sacredness of life, which can only be restored through equal sacrifice. At the mythical level, this film establishes the belief that the balance of life and death is a cosmic law maintained through moral responsibility and commensurate redemption. Thus, sacrifice is understood as both an altruistic act and a cultural construct representing adherence to the cosmic order, the balance of life, and ethical responsibility for every choice.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effect of Canva-based learning materials on the reading literacy of tenth-grade students at Tunas Harapan Private Vocational High School, Batang Serangan. The study employed a quantitative approach using an experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. A total of 33 students were selected from a population of 130 students through a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using a reading literacy test administered as both a pretest and a posttest. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, and the Paired Samples t-test. The findings revealed that the students' mean pretest score was 65.82, which increased to 76.58 in the posttest. The highest score improved from 82 to 90, while the lowest score increased from 52 to 61. The results of the normality test indicated that the data were normally distributed, with significance values of 0.200 for the pretest and 0.119 for the posttest. Furthermore, the hypothesis testing using the Paired Samples t-test showed a significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000, which was lower than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ) was accepted, while the null hypothesis (H₀) was rejected. In addition, the calculated t-value was 18.372, with a mean difference of 10.758. These findings indicate that Canva-based learning materials had a significant positive effect on the reading literacy of tenth-grade students at Tunas Harapan Private Vocational High School, Batang Serangan. Following the implementation of the instructional treatment, the use of Canva-based learning materials was proven to enhance students' reading literacy skills.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the students' persistently low skills in developing ideas, systematically structuring texts, and using effective language when writing explanatory texts. The study aimed to analyze the explanatory text writing skills of Grade XI students at SMK Pasundan 1 Serang City before and after the implementation of the Think Pair Share (TPS) cooperative learning model, as well as to analyze the model's impact on these skills. A true experimental design specifically a pretest-posttest control group design was employed. The research sample consisted of 34 students from the Office Administration 2 class (control group) and 34 students from the Accounting 1 class (experimental group). Inferential statistics were used for data analysis. Prior to hypothesis testing, prerequisite analysis tests-namely normality and homogeneity tests were conducted. The results indicated that while the explanatory text writing skills of students in the control group (taught using the conventional lecture method) improved, they remained in the "poor" category. In contrast, students in the experimental group demonstrated greater improvement in their writing skills following the implementation of the Think Pair Share (TPS) model. The results of the mean difference test regarding explanatory text writing skills indicate that the implementation of the Think Pair Share (TPS) cooperative learning model had a significant effect on the writing skills of Grade XI students at SMK Pasundan 1 Serang City.

Abstract

Interaction in variety shows provides relatively spontaneous pragmatic data, although it remains shaped by editing and television production. This study describes the syntactic forms and functions of assertive speech acts in Keep Running Season 13 Special and examines the relationship between form and function. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed using a video from the official Zhejiang STV Global Channel as the data source. The data were collected through non-participant observation, note-taking, transcription, translation, and documentation. Of 287 initial utterances, operational re-screening based on propositional content, the speaker’s commitment to truth, context, and the interlocutor’s response resulted in 93 assertive utterances. Utterances whose primary force was to seek information or to prompt the interlocutor to perform an action were excluded. Seven functions were identified: stating/affirming (38 data; 40.86%), informing (32; 34.41%), reporting (8; 8.60%), explaining (6; 6.45%), claiming/admitting (4; 4.30%), denying (3; 3.23%), and complaining (2; 2.15%). Declarative forms were dominant, while interrogative constructions were retained only when the context supported a rhetorical rather than information-seeking interpretation. The findings highlight the importance of explicit operational screening in distinguishing assertives from directives and expressives in relatively spontaneous but edited variety-show interaction.

Abstract

Journalism instruction in Indonesian Literature study programs has generally emphasized linguistic competence and news-writing technique, while the ecological perspective and dedicated digital learning media remain marginal. This study reports the needs-analysis stage of a Research and Development project following the ADDIE model, which aims to design ecology-based journalism teaching materials assisted by the literary-ecological website Ekosastra.com. Data were collected through a 30-item, four-point Likert questionnaire (Strongly Agree-Agree-Disagree-Strongly Disagree) covering four dimensions: the condition of existing teaching materials, students' ecological interest and awareness, readiness for website-based learning, and demand for supporting features. The questionnaire was administered to 100 students who had completed the journalism course, selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed descriptively using mean scores classified into four categories. The results show that existing teaching materials are perceived as low to very low in ecological content and reference variety (mean 1.22-2.22), whereas students' interest, ecological awareness, and readiness to use website-based learning are high to very high (mean 3.04-3.92). Students specifically requested authentic texts, a glossary of terms, tiered writing exercises, clear assessment rubrics, and integration with up-to-date digital sources. These findings confirm a persistent gap between the demand for ecology-based journalism learning and the availability of relevant teaching materials, while also indicating strong student readiness and institutional support for a website-assisted solution. The study concludes that the development of ecology-based journalism teaching materials integrated with Ekosastra.com is feasible and warranted to proceed to the design and development stages.

Abstract

This study investigates the motivational dynamics of rural students learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at SMPN 1 Sawit Seberang, Indonesia. Grounded in Dörnyei’s L2 Motivational Self System and Gardner’s socio-educational model, the research explores how individual and contextual factors shape language acquisition in marginalized settings. Employing a qualitative explanatory design, data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and observations from 30 eighth-grade students selected via purposive sampling. The findings reveal that the Ideal L2 Self emerges as the most dominant motivational force, with over half of the participants envisioning English proficiency as a vital tool for future vocational and academic advancement. Furthermore, the immediate L2 learning experience, particularly interactive teaching methods and extracurricular activities, significantly sustains student engagement. Conversely, the Ought-to L2 Self, driven by external familial obligations, plays a comparatively moderate role. Notably, the study uncovers a unique preservation-oriented integrative motivation, where students value English to promote their local cultural heritage globally. These insights underscore the necessity for educators to design context-responsive pedagogical strategies that nurture students' future selves while addressing rural infrastructural deficits.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the diversity of regional languages used in social interactions at SMA Negeri 1 Sungai Aur. This diversity is influenced by the linguistic backgrounds of school community members, including speakers of Malay, Mandailing, and Javanese. The use of regional languages serves not only as a means of communication but also reflects social relationships among speakers. This study aims to describe the types of regional language variation and the meanings associated with their use in social interactions among the school community. This qualitative study employed a descriptive method. The data consisted of utterances collected through observation, listening, recording, and note-taking techniques involving students, teachers, and educational staff. Five informants were selected based on the research requirements. Data validity was established through technique triangulation, while data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The results revealed three types of regional language variation: variations based on speakers, usage, and formality. Speaker-based variations were reflected in the use of Malay, Mandailing, and Javanese, influenced by the speakers’ linguistic backgrounds. Usage-based variations occurred in transactions, food and beverage ordering, services, and information delivery in the school canteen. Formality-based variations were characterized by simple and spontaneous language in informal situations, classified as casual speech. In terms of meaning, the study identified lexical, referential, and conceptual meanings in the utterances.

Abstract

Arabic language learning at the Madrasah Tsanawiyah level continues to face various challenges, one of which is the tendency to rely on teacher-centered instruction and conventional teaching practices. Such conditions may affect students’ motivation and influence their achievement in Arabic language skills. This study aims to examine the difference in Arabic learning outcomes between stuedents taught using the Mimicry Memorization method and those taught using a conventional method. The study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design using a Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The population consisted of all eighth-grade students at MTs Al Washliyah Tanjung Haloban. The sample was selected using purposive cluster sampling, resulting in 15 students in the experimental group and 15 students in the control group. Data were collected through an objective written test and analyzed using an independent-samples t-test.The findings revealed a clear difference in learning achievement between the two groups. The experimental group obtained a mean post-test score of 83.33, while the control group achieved a mean score of 60.00. This difference was statistically supported by a t-value of 9.091 with a significance level (p-value) of < 0.001. These results indicate a significant difference in the Arabic learning outcomes of students taught using the Mimicry Memorization method compared with those receiving conventional instruction. Based on these findings, the Mimicry Memorization method can serve as an effective alternative for improving students’ Arabic learning outcomes. The implementation of this method provides students with opportunities to acquire and practice language materials through repeated listening and imitation, thereby helping develop more automatic language habits and responses.

Abstract

This study examines how homophony-based numerical expressions acquire meaning in Mandarin internet slang in videos posted by the Douyin account @致豪街访. It employed a descriptive qualitative design and qualitative content analysis with phonological, semantic, and contextual perspectives. Thirty-two videos uploaded from February to April 2026 were screened; 20 contained candidate expressions, yielding 50 tokens. Twelve tokens were selected using three criteria: non-weak phonological correspondence, spontaneous interpretation by Mandarin-speaking participants in the videos, and recurrent occurrence in the corpus. The selected forms were analyzed along three dimensions: degree of phonological correspondence, reinforcing formation patterns, and communicative meaning in context. Correspondence was operationalized at the syllable level as strong, partial, or weak on the basis of onset and rime, while tone was treated as a supporting cue. Three expressions showed high overall correspondence and nine showed moderate correspondence. Their meanings comprised love and affection (9), negative emotion (1), hope/prosperity (1), and agreement/affirmation (1). Phonological substitution underlay all expressions, while formal repetition, cultural association, formulaic patterning, and contextual support reinforced interpretation. The findings indicate that exact homophony is not required in this corpus: moderate sound correspondence can remain interpreTabel when supported by structural and contextual cues. The proposed three-dimensional framework is limited to the account and period investigated and does not by itself establish community-wide conventionalization.
