Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of masculinity in the main character, Lee Gon, in the Korean drama The King: Eternal Monarch using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method, with scenes, dialogues, gestures, facial expressions, costumes, and actions of Lee Gon serving as the primary data. The analysis is conducted through Roland Barthes’ three levels of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings show that Lee Gon’s masculinity is represented through characteristics such as courage, strength, assertiveness, leadership, power, responsibility, and the ability to protect those he loves. At the connotative level, these signs construct the image of an ideal man who is authoritative, independent, strong, and capable of making decisions. At the level of myth, these representations reproduce traditional constructions of masculinity that associate men with power, leadership, and the role of protector. However, Lee Gon’s character also demonstrates an emotional dimension through affection, care, loyalty, and openness in expressing his feelings. These findings indicate that the representation of masculinity in The King: Eternal Monarch not only reinforces traditional masculine values but also negotiates them with a more emotional and flexible form of masculinity. Thus, the drama presents a construction of the ideal man that combines strength and authority with the ability to express emotions and affection.

Abstract

This study examines typographically marked capitalization in the short-story anthology A Pandemic of Love by combining two analytical layers: the Fifth Edition of the Enhanced Indonesian Spelling System (EYD V) and a stylistic perspective. Indonesian spelling-error studies commonly treat unconventional capitalization as a normative deviation, whereas literary texts may deliberately employ graphological deviation to create visual salience and meaning effects. This qualitative descriptive-interpretive study analyzes six marked forms found in the narrative text: DI, MENYAYANGImu, PAGI, CHLOE, AKU, and AWAN. Data were collected through close reading, note-taking, and documentation. Each form was mapped against EYD V capitalization rules, normalized into its standard form, and subsequently interpreted using the concept of typographic foregrounding. The findings show that five of the six data (83.3%) involve full capitalization of a lexical unit, while one datum (16.7%) combines uppercase and lowercase letters within a single word. Normatively, these forms differ from standard Indonesian orthographic realization, which assigns capitalization to specific positions rather than entire lexical units. Nevertheless, the recurring visual salience of capitalization in a literary text may also function to emphasize expressions, intensify emotional force, and direct readers’ attention. The study therefore argues that capitalization analysis in literary prose should distinguish orthographic nonconformity from potentially intentional typographic deviation. This dual perspective constitutes the study’s contribution to Indonesian spelling-error research and literary stylistics.
