Abstract

This study aims to determine learning difficulties based on students' understanding of protist material for class X IPA in SMA Negeri in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province, and the main factors causing students' learning difficulties. The research method used in this research is descriptive quantitative. The sample of this study was taken at random, amounting to five schools. The data collection technique used is a two-tier multiple-choice diagnostic test instrument to identify students' learning difficulties and a questionnaire instrument to determine the causes of students' learning difficulties. The results showed that learning difficulties from the highest to the lowest were analyzing the basic grouping of protists, understanding how protists reproduce, recognizing protist objects, explaining the morphological characteristics of protists, and understanding the role of protists in protists life and grouping protists into several classes. The main factors causing student learning difficulties are the facilities and infrastructure and the nature of the protist material. Good planning of practicum activities, selection of appropriate learning methods, and linking learning to everyday life must be done by teachers to help overcome student learning difficulties.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the feasibility level of learning multimedia developed using Macromedia Flash 8 software on the food digestive system material as a source of student self-study based on the responses of material experts, media experts, field teachers, and students. This study uses a 4-D model of instructional development design, including the stages of definition, design, development, and dissemination, limited to the limited deployment stage to see students' classical learning completeness. This research was started in September 2020 – February 2021. The product trial was conducted at the GKPI Padang Bulan Private High School, Medan. The results showed that (1) learning multimedia developed using Macromedia Flash 8 software on the food digestive system material in humans had been compiled with input from validators, biology educators, and students; (2) the learning multimedia developed is considered suitable for use in biology learning in terms of the assessment of material experts with an average score of 4.5, media experts with an average score of 4.4, field of study teachers with an average score of 4.9, and students with an average score of 4.7; and (3) 97% of students completed learning the material on the human digestive system after using learning multimedia based on Macromedia Flash 8. As an implication, the developed learning multimedia is expected to help the biology learning process, whether online or face-to-face.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students' frequency, evaluation, and perceptions on the implementation of practicum in SMA Negeri in Rantauprapat City. The sample in this study were 3 teachers and students of class X MIA at SMA Negeri 1 Rantau Utara, SMA Negeri 2 Rantau Utara and SMA Negeri 1 Rantau Selatan totaling 107 people taken by random sampling. The data analysis technique used is a quantitative descriptive analysis technique, which describes and explains the data based on the field. This research is an explorative survey, namely by observing, interviewing, and exploring. The analysis results show that the average frequency of practicum implementation is 66%, which is quite often done. The laboratory conditions in the three sample schools were classified as very good (83.18%). The student interest in laboratory activities is also classified as very good (86.14%), but some schools, namely SMA Negeri 1 Rantau Utara and SMA Negeri 2 Rantau Utara, experienced problems in the time of practicum implementation (70.44%). The preparation and implementation of the practicum have been carried out very well (88.07%), with 83.90% of reports and evaluations carried out for each practicum activity. However, although it is classified as very good, the average evaluation value is only 59.60, which is quite enough.

Abstract

Science education aims to enable teachers to teach problem-solving in the teaching and learning process. Students should have at least two competencies to achieve learning objectives, including metacognitive abilities and the ability to recognize their potential, interests, talents. The ability to recognize potential, interests, and talents are related to self-concept. One alternative learning model that can develop a positive self-concept and train students' metacognitive abilities is the problem-based learning model. The learning process on the excretory system material demands a process of discovery and problem solving that trains students' metacognitive abilities. This study aims to determine the effect of the Problem Based Learning model on students' self-concept and metacognitive abilities. The research sample was two classes obtained based on the purposive sampling technique. The research design used is the Pretest-Postest Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The research data was obtained from self-concept questionnaires and students' metacognitive abilities. The results showed that the average value of self-concept and metacognitive abilities of students taught using the PBL model was more significant than the class taught using the DL model. The results of hypothesis testing and effect size also show that the PBL model significantly affects students' self-concept and metacognitive abilities with scores of 1.9 (high) and 2.4 (high).

Abstract

The module is one of the alternative teaching materials that can help students or educators in the learning and teaching process. This study aims to examine the validity of the tissue culture module of the moon orchid (Phalaenopsis amabilis L.) using leaf explants and the hormone Naphthalene Acetic Acid (NAA), which was developed at the Biology Faculty of the Islamic University of Riau. This study uses the ADDIE model with several stages: analysis, design, and development. These research results are a printed product, namely a tissue culture module. This research data was obtained from the validation results by material experts, learning experts, and response tests with lecturers and 16 2015 school year students who had taken the tissue culture course. The validation results by material experts showed that the module developed got an average percentage of 86.45% (very valid). Learning experts got an average percentage of 87.74% (very valid). This developed module received very valid responses from lecturers and students. It can be seen from the average response of lecturers 95.48% (very good) and students with an average percentage of 90.31% (very good). Based on the validation results from the experts, the product in the form of a tissue culture module is very valid to be used in the learning process.

Abstract

This study aimed to improve student achievement through song-based multimedia and animated videos on viral material. This type of research is (R&D) adapting the ADDIE model. The population is class X SMA IT Baitul Qurro South Tangerang, sampling using non-probability sampling with saturated sampling technique where the entire population is a sample of 45 students. Learning achievement is measured using instruments that have been validated by experts (teachers and biology lecturers) using essays (C1- C6) for cognitive tests, questionnaires for affective tests, and observation sheets for psychomotor tests. The test was conducted before (pretest) and after (posttest) learning. Data analysis used the average score, percentage, and N-gain. The data obtained were analyzed by normality and homogeneity tests. The results obtained indicate that song-based multimedia and animated videos can improve student achievement with an average N-gain, namely: Cognitive domain of 56.8% (quite effective); The affective domain is 57% (quite effective), and the psychomotor domain is 75% (quite effective).

Abstract

This study aims to develop and determine the feasibility of a tissue culture textbook based on scientific literacy, conducted from November 2020 to May 2021. This study used the Dick & Carrey development model, modified to the formative evaluation stage. The instrument used is a questionnaire filled out by validators (material experts, learning design experts, layout design experts), lecturers of the Network Culture course, and students majoring in biology. The results showed that 77% of students had difficulty learning about somaclonal diversity and needed additional cultural application material. There were no scientific literacy-based tissue culture textbooks in the UNIMED library. Based on the survey, 76.9% of students said they liked somaclonal diversity material, 86.6% said it was challenging to study, 53.8% of the material described the interaction of science, environment, technology, and society, 30.8% did not explain the application of culture. As the results of textbook development, validator analysis shows 86% (very feasible) from material experts, 91% (very feasible) from learning design experts and 91% (very feasible) from layout design experts. The percentage of responses showed: 93% (very feasible) from lecturers, 86% (very feasible) from individuals, 90% (very feasible) from small groups and 89% (very feasible) from limited groups. Overall the textbook is very feasible to use.
