Abstract

Adolescence is a period of secondary physical and sexual growth changes, one of which is menstruation. The prevalence of menstrual pain in Indonesia reaches 98.8% in teenagers. Menstrual pain has a direct effect that negatively impacts the quality of life of teenagers, such as interfering with daily physical activity, school attendance, study concentration and even academic achievement. Complementary therapy has been used by 15.5-79.3% and has been proven to be effective in treating primary dysmenorrhoea, including complementary therapy with warm water compresses, herbs, drinking mineral water and relaxation. SMAN 7 Jambi City is located in Danau Teluk District, the working area of the Olak Kemang Community Health Center which is often used as a place for health education. Preliminary studies conducted show that youth posyandu have been formed and are being implemented every month. However, not many teenagers attend, so to overcome this, health education is carried out in schools. Apart from that, the results of interviews with PMR teachers showed that at SMAN 7 Jambi City they had never received education from health workers regarding the use of complementary therapies to treat primary dysmenorrhoea. This activity aims to provide education about the use of complementary therapies to treat primary dysmenorrhoea. Carried out on 22 young women in class XII F1 at SMAN 7 Jambi City from September 2023 to February 2024. The expected target is to increase knowledge between before and after being given education. Monitoring and evaluating activities using a one group pretest and posttest design approach. The results of the service showed an increase in knowledge after being given education on the use of complementary therapies to overcome dysmenorrhea by 59%, so that young women can use complementary therapies to overcome dysmenorrhea independently.

This community engagement program aimed to enhance the role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in HIV/AIDS prevention and management through counseling skills training conducted at the Faculty of Nursing, Hasanuddin University. Nine participants from five NGOs took part in the training, which covered topics such as HIV/AIDS knowledge, health literacy, and counseling practice simulations. Evaluation was carried out through pre- and post-tests, as well as direct observation. Results showed a notable increase in participants' knowledge and adequate counseling practice skills, although gaps remained in technical competencies such as psychosocial assessment and handling complex cases. Challenges included participant absenteeism and schedule delays, affecting program effectiveness. Further structured training is needed to optimize the capacity of community counselors to support people living with HIV/AIDS professionally and sustainably.

Abstract

Family caregivers play a crucial role in the care of individuals with mental disorders (ODGJ), yet they often lack adequate education and support. This limitation can diminish their effectiveness in providing necessary care and assistance. The purpose of this community service initiative is to assess the effectiveness of educational interventions in empowering family caregivers of ODGJ and enhancing their active roles in community mental health care. The intervention began with a pre-test to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and roles of health cadres, followed by education through lectures, videos, interactive discussions, and communication simulations. Subsequently, free health screenings were conducted for health cadres, individuals with mental disorders (ODGJ), and former ODGJ as part of a physical and mental health promotion initiative. The results of this community service activity showed a significant increase in knowledge and attitudes, focusing on the feelings, attitudes, and motivations of caregivers in their roles as family supporters. The educational intervention successfully improved caregivers' competence in the early detection of mental health issues, as well as their roles and responsibilities as mental health cadre. This improvement also led to better quality support for ODGJ and reduced pressure on community mental health services. The educational program proved effective in empowering family caregivers of ODGJ, and it is recommended to further develop and expand this program to reach more caregivers and communities.
