Abstract

This paper aims to describe the shift in the circumcision tradition of girls in Kudus, Central Java. The focus of this shift discussion was mainly on the shift of circumcision done by Dukun Bayi (Traditional Midwife) to that done by a professional midwife, and the prevailing cultural shift is also illustrated. The data were collected through interviews with mothers of the circumcised girls through random sampling. This research is categorized as a case study. The collected data were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach. The results of the study revealed that the tradition of girl circumcision is a result of following a tradition that has been done for ages, the understanding of fiqh experts plays a role in the circumcision of girls. As the village midwife is serving childbirth, the circumcision that was initially done by a dukun now is done by professional midwives. The dukun played as a massage therapist to mothers with old pregnancy, also to the postpartum mothers and their babies. The knowledge that girls circumcision needs to be done by medical staff (midwives) will be more optimal if the village government facilitates the role of village midwives in Kudus.

Abstract

This study was derived from a paradegm developed by historians that the process of conversion to Islam in the Malay world was spread dominantly by the Sufis. As a result, historical reconstruction in this region has always been linked to the teachings, rituals and religious behavior of the Sufi. Based on available sources (manuscripts and archives), the role of traders was very significant in conversion to Islam in the Malay world. Through trade and religion, the countries in the Indian Ocean were interconnected. The religious conversion among traders grew faster as in the 17-18th century AD traders from various regions came to the West Coast of Sumatra to get spices. Most of these traders have embraced Islam. The Muslim traders carried the spirit of the Koran in their right hands and the commodities in the left hand. This spirit of spreading Islam was the driving force of the merchants to spread Islam in every place they visited. This research has implications for the community’s perspective on Islam in the Malay world because Islam that was brought by traders was progressive and flexible about the local culture. This study is a historical socio-religious study that is examined through three ap- proaches, namely historical approach, social approach, and religious approach. This study found that the religious conversion in the Malay world was succeeded mostly by the merchants. To facilitate the conversion, they married local women and negotiated with the authorized Sultan.

Abstract

The teachings of Islam come from a single source, God the Al- mighty. However, the application of Islam in people’s lives has become very diverse because of the interaction between these teachings with the local culture and traditions of the adherents. The differences and diver- sity that arise in the practices of Islamic teachings, if not treated prop- erly, can lead to blaming other people’s practices of Islamic teachings. Buka Luwur Ceremony is a culture in the Kudus area, Central Java, which has interacted with Islamic values. Buka Luwur Ceremony aims to pray for the spirit of Sunan Kudus, and at the same time to commemorate his services for successfully spreading Islam in Kudus area. In addition, it is also intended to model the success of Sunan Kudus in laying the founda- tion in preaching. In Islamic teaching perspective, Buka Luwur ceremony is full of Islamic and cultural values relevant to be applied in the midst of radicalism. Buka Luwur ceremony is able to unite two different prin- ciples between Islam and the culture/traditions of society.

Abstract

This article discusses the Maro tradition of Banyumas commu- nity, whose existence is endangered by the modernization. Maro is a tradition dealing with agriculture profit share between a landowner and the cultivators by dividing the harvest into two equal parts, half is for the landowner, and the other half is for the cultivator. Maro is commonly applied for dividing the net profit, i.e. the amount of harvest minus the expenses of plantation processes. This tradition enables the low social- economy class to survive as they get the fair benefit for their efforts. The data of this research were collected through interviewing the people en- gaged in the Maro tradition as well as literary studies from previous re- searches related to the topic. This research finds that maro tradition in Banyumas has been popular since the arrival of tarekat in this region. The lands owned by kyai were rented to the cultivators whose payment is given in the form of profit-sharing, called Maro. With such a system, the profit is shared fairly to the cultivators who have done a lot of effort in producing rice. This system meets Islamic values, which emphasize profit sharing based on efforts and work performances. The landowners give freedom to the cultivators, and the net harvest obtained is divided equally between the two parties. Maro system, which was carried out with an oral contract, is considered not to burden the cultivators because of the clear counting system and easy procedures. Social solidarity is also formed in this tradition, it employs people to help the planting and harvesting process, called sambatan.

Abstract

Characters are formed in a community through tradition, custom, and cultural activities. A religious tradition called Kupatan has been car- ried out by the Madurese community, especially in Bangkalan, and has been passed down from generation to generation. This study aims to determine the Islamic character values in the Kupatan tradition. The re- sults of this study reveal that the Kupatan tradition could build Islamic character values of the Bangkalan community through various activities in it, namely silaturrahmi, anjang-sana, and almsgiving. The Kupatan tradition is held every year in the month of Shawwal, to be precise after seven days of the Sunnah fast by following the instructions of their an- cestors. Through this tradition, people could increase friendships (main- taining kinship ties) through visits to the houses of family, friends, and fellow community members (silaturrahmi). Silaturrahmi is highly recom- mended in Islam since it could extend life and expand sustenance (rezeki). Besides, the tradition of almsgiving (sedekah), in which all members of the community, both the fortunate and the less fortunate ones, exchange gifts, could also build moral values. The gift-givers should not expect anything in return but the pleasure (ridha) of Allah SWT. The manifesta- tion of Islamic character values in Kupatan could form a community that is religious, responsible, socially and environmentally caring, friendly and communicative, loves the homeland, and is creative.
