Abstract

Background: Smoking behavior among male adolescents remains a major public health issue in Indonesia. Adolescence is a critical developmental stage where individuals are vulnerable to social, familial, and media influences that can initiate early smoking habits. Objective: This study aimed to identify the factors influencing smoking behavior among male adolescents in Dusun Keramat 1. Methods: This research employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of 850 male adolescents, with 89 respondents selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire covering parental influence, peer influence, personality, and advertising exposure. Descriptive analysis was used to determine the dominant factors influencing smoking behavior. Results: The findings revealed that most respondents were 17 years old (18%) and categorized as light smokers (56.2%), with the majority beginning to smoke during junior high school (55.1%). The most influential factors on smoking behavior were parental influence (70.8%), peer influence (66.3%), cigarette advertising (61.8%), and personality (59.6%). Conclusion: Smoking behavior among male adolescents is shaped by a combination of family, social, and media factors. Preventive efforts should focus on enhancing parental involvement and school-based health education to promote positive role modeling and reduce smoking initiation among youth

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is one of the major non-communicable diseases with high prevalence and severe complications, such as diabetic foot ulcers, which may lead to amputation. Preventive efforts through proper foot care largely depend on patients’ knowledge levels. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge level and foot care practices among patients with diabetes mellitus in the working area of Sungai Baru Public Health Center, Teluk Keramat District, Sambas Regency. Methods: This research employed a quantitative correlational design with a survey approach involving 44 respondents selected using Proportionate Stratified Random Sampling. Data were collected using the standardized Diabetes Foot Knowledge Questionnaire and the Nottingham Assessment of Functional Footcare. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-Square test with a 95% confidence level. Results: Most respondents were under 55 years old (65.9%), female (54.5%), had elementary education (38.6%), and earned below Rp2,792,599 (93.2%). A total of 61.4% of respondents had good knowledge, and 54.5% had good foot care practices. The Chi-Square test showed a significant relationship between knowledge and diabetic foot care practices (p=0.00). Conclusion: There is a significant correlation between knowledge and foot care practices among diabetes mellitus patients. Continuous health education and nurse-led assistance are essential to improve self-care behaviors and prevent diabetic foot ulcers.

Abstract

Background: Toilet training should be introduced early to instill good hygiene habits in children. Failure in toilet training can lead to negative parental behavior, such as harsh treatment or inappropriate discipline, potentially disrupting the child’s personality and fostering introversion. Improper toilet training can also result in long-term behavioral and psychological issues, including dependency, low self-control, and emotional distress related to defecation and urination. Objective: This study aimed to determine the relationship between mothers’ knowledge and attitudes with the success of toilet training among toddlers in Parit Baru Village. Methods: This research used a quantitative descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique was purposive sampling, involving 71 respondents. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed using the Kendall Tau statistical test. Results: The findings showed that most mothers had a sufficient level of knowledge, totaling 41 respondents (57.7%), and a sufficient attitude toward toilet training, totaling 43 respondents (60.6%). The statistical analysis revealed no significant relationship between mothers’ knowledge and the success of toilet training. However, a significant relationship was found between mothers’ attitudes and the success of toilet training among toddlers in Parit Baru Village. Conclusion: The success of toilet training in toddlers is not influenced by the level of maternal knowledge but is significantly associated with the mother’s attitude. Positive maternal attitudes toward consistency, patience, and encouragement play a crucial role in achieving successful toilet training outcomes

Abstract

Background: Traditional Sape’ music, a distinctive instrument of the Dayak community, is known for its relaxing effects and potential to reduce blood pressure. Elderly individuals with hypertension often experience elevated blood pressure due to stress and anxiety. Non-pharmacological interventions such as music therapy can serve as an alternative approach to naturally stabilize blood pressure. Objective: To determine the effect of traditional Sape’ music on the blood pressure of hypertensive elderly Dayak Bakati individuals in the working area of Seluas Health Center. Methods: This study employed a pre-experimental design with a one group pretest-posttest approach. Samples were selected using purposive sampling among hypertensive Dayak Bakati elders. The intervention involved listening to traditional Sape’ music for a specific duration. Blood pressure was measured before and after the intervention using a digital sphygmomanometer. Data were analyzed using the Paired Sample t-test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: There was a significant reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure after exposure to Sape’ music (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Traditional Sape’ music effectively reduces blood pressure in hypertensive elderly Dayak Bakati individuals. This culturally rooted music therapy can serve as a complementary non-pharmacological approach in hypertension management.
