Abstract

Education plays a povital role in shaping the future of students, particulary those with special needs. Deaf students encounter challenges in language acquisition and reading comjprehension due to hearing impairments that impede their ability to process verbal information. This study investigates the impact of Preview, Question, Read, Summary, and Test (PQRST) method of enhacing the reading comprehension skills of deaf students in the seventh grade at Special School for Deaf Children Yayasan Rehabilitasi Tuna Rungu Wicara (SLB B YRTRW) in Surakarta. A pre-experimental research design employing a one-group pretest-posttest approach was employed. Nine deaf students paricipated in study, enganging in series of reading comprehension activities utilising the PQRST method. Data collection was conducted through written and oral comprehension tests before and after intervention. Statistical analysis employing the Wilcoxson Signed Rank Test was conducted to asses the method's effecteness. The findings revealed a subtansial improvement in students' reading comprehension scores following the implementation of the PQRST method. Students demonstrated enhancred capabilities in identifying main ideas, summarising texts, and answering comprehension questions. The structured approach of the PQRST method provided the systematic learning framework that supported student's cognitive processing and memory retentio. This research underscores the significance of employing structured and interactive teaching methods to optimise the learning potenstial of deaf students.

Abstract

This article is a literature review which aims to explore the use of transcription technology as a means of increasing learning accessibility for deaf children. Deaf children face obstacles in accessing written language due to their hearing limitations. Transcription technology can be an effective solution in overcoming this obstacle. Utilization of transcription technology allows deaf children to access written texts through text-to-speech transcription or display of translated text. In this article, we discuss several important aspects related to the use of transcription technology, including increasing understanding and involvement of deaf children in learning, developing language skills, accessibility to digital learning materials, and inclusion of deaf children in the wider educational environment. In this literature review, research results related to this topic have been summarized and identified the benefits and challenges associated with the use of transcription technology in the context of learning for deaf children. It is hoped that the results of this literature review will provide a better understanding of the importance of using transcription technology in increasing the accessibility of written language for deaf children. The practical implications of this article can help educators, technology developers, and other related parties in designing and implementing more inclusive solutions for the learning of deaf children

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) method on the vocabulary acquisition of children with autism at SLB Negeri Purworejo in the 2024/2025 academic year. The research employs a quantitative approach using a single-subject experimental method (Single Subject Research) with an A-B-A design. The subjects of the study were two ninth-grade students with autism spectrum disorder. Data were collected using a multiple-choice vocabulary test consisting of 16 items. The results showed an increase in vocabulary scores after the PECS method intervention. Data from the first baseline phase showed low and very low scores, while the intervention phase showed a stable increase. These findings indicate that the PECS method has a positive effect on the vocabulary acquisition of children with autism.

Abstract

Blind students in inclusive college classes face various challenges, especially in accessing visual materials and actively participating in the learning process. Based on these problems, this study aims to examine the role of peers in supporting the learning of students with visual impairments in higher education environments. This study uses a qualitative, phenomenological approach to explore the subjective experiences of non-disabled students who accompany blind students. The subject of the study was a student of the Special Education Study Program who actively helped his blind friend in academic and social activities in an inclusive class. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive analysis model. The results showed that peers provided support that included academic aspects (such as explaining visual materials and providing digital notes), emotional (increasing self-confidence), social (being a discussion partner), and technical (campus navigation). The conclusion of this study shows that the role of peers contributes significantly to creating an inclusive learning environment, supporting academic success, and strengthening social relations of blind students in higher education.

Abstract

This research was conducted to discover the correlation between verbal-linguistic aptitude and investigative interest among adolescents with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at Special Education Schools in Solo Raya. The total sample consisted of 16 adolescents with ASD in the age group of 10 - 21 years. The sampling technique conducted for this research is purposive sampling. To meet the objective of the research, multiple intelligences aptitude and the vocational interest psychological scale by Yuliastuti (2022) were used. The data was analyzed by using descriptive analysis and a Kendall’s Tau statistical correlation type in SPSS 25. This research reveals a correlation coefficient of 0.310 with p = 0.124 (p > 0.05), indicating that there is no correlation between verbal-linguistic aptitude and investigative interest among adolescents with ASD in Special Education Schools in Solo Raya.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low initial reading ability of eighth grade students at Surakarta Special School, where all students still have difficulty in recognizing letters and often make mistakes in distinguishing letter shapes. Based on these problems, the researcher aims to determine the effect of implementing learning with the syllabic method to influence the improvement of initial reading ability in eighth grade mentally retarded children at SLB C SETYADARMA Surakarta. This research uses a quantitative approach with an experimental design in the form of a one-group pretest-posttest design. The validity test used in this study is content validity with the Aiken's V formula obtained an average value of 0.94. While the reliability test uses Cronbach Alpha which shows a significance value of 0.884. Data collection was carried out using an oral test instrument. The data analysis technique used to test the research hypothesis is the Wilcoxon Sign Rank Test. The results of the study showed an increase in initial reading ability after the syllabic method was applied. This finding indicates that the use of the syllabic method has a positive effect on improving the initial reading ability of mentally retarded children. The advantage of this method lies in its approach, which focuses directly on syllables rather than letter-by-letter spelling, thereby accelerating the reading learning process for children with special needs. Thus, the syllabic method can be used as an effective alternative reading learning method for students with intellectual disabilities.

Abstract

Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta Airport is ranked second and is considered superior in having facilities that support transportation mode integration, with accessibility that is friendly to people with disabilities. However, there are various obstacles for people with disabilities in accessing and utilizing the facilities provided. The research question is how accessibility facilities affect the experience and emotional engagement of people with disabilities in airport public spaces. The main argument in the context is that sense of place is formed not only from physical elements, but also from social relationships and multisensory comfort. Using a Case Study approach and qualitative methods, data were collected through observations and interviews with five disabled informants. The results showed limitations in signage, voice/visual information, quiet space, and social support. This research concludes that inclusive design and policies based on user experience are needed to realize equitable and meaningful public spaces..

Abstract

This research aims to examine the effect of mini billiards games on the concentration of autistic children at the Mitra Ananda Karanganyar Autism Center. This study uses a quantitative research method with a Single Subject Research (SSR) approach that applies an A-B-A design. The subjects of this study are 12-year-old children with autism spectrum disorder at the Mitra Ananda Karanganyar Autism Center. Data collection was conducted using an observation sheet with 10 items that assessed the children's lack of concentration in terms of concentration. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques with visual data analysis, including analysis within and between conditions. The results of the data analysis showed that subject T had an average duration of non concentration behavior of 393.55 seconds in the baseline-1 phase (A1), 365.27 seconds in the intervention phase (B), and 278.44 seconds in the baseline-2 phase (A2). These data indicate a decrease in non-concentration behavior in subject T after using the mini billiard game intervention. The results of the study show a low percentage of overlap, indicating that the mini billiard game has an effect on the concentration of autistic children at the Mitra Ananda Karanganyar Autism Center.
