Using 5E learning cycle-based laboratory activity in improving students’ problem solving skills on mixture separation topic. Objectives: The aim of this study was to describe the effectivity of laboratory activity on mixture separation topic based on 5E learning cycle to improve students’ problem solving skills. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was carried out in the SMPN 33 Bandar Lampung by using the matching only pretest-posttest control group design. The 7th-D and the 7th-E grade were used as experimental and control classes, respectively, which they were obtained by using purposive sampling technique. Findings: The effectivity of 5E learning cycle-based laboratory activity measured based on the n-gainand the effect size values. The n-gain value of experimental and control classes were in medium (0.52) and low (0.29) categorized, respectively. The effect size value was in large categorized (0.67). Conclusion: These results indicated that 5E learning cycle-based laboratory activity could be effective to improve students’ problem solving skills to separate of mixture. Keywords: problem solving skills, laboratory activity, 5E learning cycle. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v9.i2.201922

The Novel Work Environment Model to Improve Teacher Performance: A Study at SMAN 1 Sungkai Jaya, North Lampung. Objectives: This study aims to create a good environment in order to improve teacher performance in SMA Negeri 1 Sungkai Jaya, North Lampung. In this study, a combination of two aspects of the work environment model was carried out to create a reflective and appropriate work environment model. Methods: This study uses qualitative methods with 50 respondents. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, documentation, and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). Findings: The results showed that the social environment at SMAN 1 was good enough to produce good teacher outcomes, but improving communication caused discomfort between the teacher and school principal relations. The artistic environment at SMAN 1 shows that the teachers in carrying out the assignments given by the principal are going well, in an orderly and disciplined manner, but the quality of the learning tools is better than the difficulties in time. Conclusions: Model The reflective work environment has a good status on the relationship between the principal and the teacher because the teacher and the principal are not directly related. 21st Century Skills of Students in a Technical Vocational Education and Training Institution in the Philippines. Objectives: This study aims to assess the 21st Century Skills of Students in a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Institution in the Philippines. Methods: The descriptive method was used to describe the characteristics and the competency level of 21st century skills of sixty-eight TVET students enrolled in the first semester school year 2019-2020 at Camarines Sur Insitute of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Philippines. A comparative method was used to analyze the similarities and differences of skills. The percentage, ranking, average weighted mean, and one-way ANOVA were used for statistical analysis in determining the interpretation based on the 4-point Likert’s rating scale used. Findings: The study reveals that the overall level of competency of 21st century skills of TVET Students is 3.081 interpreted as moderately competent which implies that the students can apply their skills in simple situations. Conclusion: TVET Students in Philippines possess the 21st century skills. Keywords: 21st Century Skills, TVET Students, descriptive and comparative analysis. How Do I Unlearn You? Towards Designing an Approach in Unlearning Negative Habits. Objectives: The study intends to explore and understand the unlearning process, as grounded from the experiences of teachers and students of Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao (Values Education in the Philippines) towards developing a new approach in teaching the aforementioned subject area. Methods: Interviews were conducted to 33 respondents from a private Catholic school, and transcripts were analyzed through the techniques of thematic analysis and grounded theory. Findings: The adolescents’ negative habits, as well as teachers’ facilitation practices generated substantial themes such as: (1) need for a strong sense of self; (2) difficulty of unlearning due to various “blocks”; (3) instruments to unlearn; and (4) role of teachers as empathic individuals. These codes then led to the final product of the study as E.L.S.A.’s approach to unlearn (Empowering the Self, Letting Go, Starting a New Life, and Action), which may be utilized as schools’ pedagogical framework in producing classroom-based materials in facilitating values formation. Conclusion: The idea of unlearning is not an experimental process or behavioral modification. It only explored the concept and process of unlearning, but did not necessarily aim to make unlearning take place on the psyche of the students. Keywords: Unlearning negative habits, edukasyon sa pagpapakatao (values education), teaching approaches, adolescence, thematic analysis. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v9.i2.201902

Comparison of problem based learning and realistic mathematics education to improve student academic performance. Objectives: The aim of this study was to see an increase in the academic performance of island students in Ambon City by applying the problem based learning (PBL) learning model and realistic mathematics education (RME). Methods: This research was in the form of a descriptive qualitative study with a case study approach and a sample of 116 students. Findings: There was a significant increase in student academic performance at each meeting and learning outcomes with PBL were higher than RME. Conclusion: The PBL model is more effective in increasing students’ academic performance than RME because students were facilitated with onlinebased media in PBL when compared to RME, so that it can attract students’ attention in learning and have a significant impact on student academic performance. Keywords: Academic performance, problem-based learning, realistic mathematics education DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v9.i2.201921

This study used observation, interview and documentation as the technique of data collection. The data analyze was completed by doing the data reduction, data presentation and verification. Findings: The results showed that: (1) The planning of teachers’ performance assessment was organized by the teachers in the beginning of a new year which the function is as the reference for the teacher to accomplish the teaching and learning process; (2) The implementation of teachers’ performance assessment was not implemented as well as possible therefore the class management does not meet the standard of the minimum service of learning; (3) The supporting factors in evaluating teacher’s performance are: supervision activity, the teachers are engaging to the teachers training and workshop (training assessment), reward to the highest result or the score. The obstruction factors in evaluating teacher’s performance are: teachers do not produce the syllabus and lesson plan, the mindset of teachers’ performance assessment is only regarded as the need of formality, the limited time to organize of the employee performance goal.
