Abstract

Teachers’ Questioning Strategies to Promote Students’ Engagement in EFL Classroom: The case of Islamic Boarding Schools in Aceh, Indonesia. Objective: The present study aims to investigate the use of questioning strategies during classroom interaction. There have been numerous studies on questioning strategies, however, Islamic boarding schools have received less attention. Method; There were N=106 students, Aged 14-16 years as students at Islamic boarding schools in Aceh, and English teachers (N=5) participated in this study selected through purposive sampling, documentation, observation, and interview are triangulation of instruments. The data were analyzed by using the descriptive qualitative form by Marzano's Observational Protocol Sheet (2013). Findings: The findings revealed that teacher mostly employs questioning strategies to check the students' knowledge and comprehension in the learning process by using many kinds of questions. Teachers used the questioning strategy through interview results to engage students and monitor the extent to which they met the learning indicators. Furthermore, when it happened to come to promoting children's critical thinking, teachers were ineffective because the questions were yes/no questions. In conclusion; it explicitly means that this strategy is interactive and effective and also can be a beneficial way to the students and teacher in the classroom interaction at school. Keywords: questioning strategies, Islamic boarding school, classroom interaction.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i1.202207

Abstract

Mismatched teachers’ experiences in Public Junior High Schools: A Phenomenological Research. Objectives: This research aimed to describe the mismatched teachers’ experiences who have shared the phenomenon of teaching non-related subjects for approximately two or more years in ten public junior high schools in Jambi City. More specifically, this study explored their experiences, challenges, and coping strategies in dealing with professional mismatches. Methods: This qualitative research utilized a transcendental phenomenological design, purposeful participant sampling, and interviews as the primary data collection. Moreover, the constant comparative method was used by the researcher to analyze the interviewing data in this research. Findings: The findings identified three major themes: belief in God, unsolvable problems, and receiving and giving regarding the mismatched teachers’ experiences in teaching non-related subjects in the current schools. This research found that belief in God played a central role in motivating teachers to persevere despite difficulties. Teachers also encountered systemic challenges, including a lack of administrative support, inadequate teaching materials, and mismatched recruitment policies. However, many teachers developed strategies to manage classroom challenges, student engagement, and discipline. Additionally, receiving and giving emerged as a crucial aspect of their professional lives, where teachers sought support from peers, administrators, and personal faith while also mentoring new teachers. Conclusion: There were three significant themes; believe in God, unsolvable problems, and receiving and giving discovered in this research.  These themes represent their emotional, professional, and institutional issues faced by mismatched teachers. These findings suggest the need for policy improvements, such as targeted professional development, access to appropriate teaching resources, and better recruitment practices to support mismatched teachers. Recognizing their dedication and struggles can lead to more effective educational policies that enhance teacher well-being and student outcomes. While mismatched teachers exhibit resilience and adaptability, addressing their challenges is essential to maintain educational quality in public schools. Keywords: phenomenological research, mismatched teachers.

Abstract

Teachers’ Experiences in Flipped Classroom in South-East Asian Countries: A Meta-Synthesis. This study aimed to meta-synthesize the teachers' experiences utilizing flipped classrooms across South-East Asian countries. Fifteen (15) out of 1,118 studies were included from various accessible academic databases in Publish or Perish software which was scrutinized using a set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. The included studies were organized using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) 2020 flow diagram, and were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's six-step thematic analysis, which generated five themes and one meta-theme. This meta-synthesis revealed that teachers utilizing flipped classrooms experienced varied experiences from shifting roles, making them more efficient, and improved teacher-student interaction. Teachers also experienced anxieties and faced challenges, yet no studies from the fifteen studies have shown how to address the said challenges. It is recommended that Teacher Education Institutions provide comprehensive training on appropriate technology and emotional and psychological support for the teachers utilizing flipped classrooms. Keywords: flipped classroom, teachers’ experiences, meta-synthesis, south-east asia, systematic review.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i2.202306

Abstract

Examining the Impact of Writing Strategies in Enhancing Pre-Service Teachers’ Mathematical Problem-Solving Skills. Objective: This study investigated the impact of structured writing activities in enhancing the pre-service teachers’ mathematical problem-solving skills and examined the challenges they encountered during the implementation of these strategies. Method: A mixed-method research design was employed using problem-solving pretest and posttest and interviews. The study involved 35 second-year pre-service teachers selected from 142 pre-service secondary teachers from a state university in the Philippines through purposive sampling.  Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while qualiative data obtained from interviews were subjected to thematic analysis. Findings: The results underscored the notable impact of writing strategies in enhancing the pre-service teachers’ problem-solving abilities.  A pretest mean percentage score of 52.29 (developing) increased to 76.86 (proficient) on posttest.  This yielded a moderate normalized gain  of 0.52 and a very large effect size (Cohen’s d = 2.39). The paired t-test showed a significant effect (t = 14.2, p < .001).  The ANCOVA and regression analysis showed that the academic background of the participants did not predict their posttest performance, unlike the pretest.  The qualitative findings revealed the participants’ challenges related to translating their thoughts in writing, limited content knowledge, emotional factors, difficulty in problem comprehension and analysis, and lack of problem-solving strategies. Conclusion: Despite the challenges encountered by the pre-service teachers, the results underscore the positive effect of the structured writing strategies in enhancing their problem-solving skills.   This study suggests that structured writing strategies can be adopted in teacher training curricula to strenghten mathematical reasoning.   It recommends integrating writing strategies in mathematics instruction whether  in the development of the concept or assessment, through reflective writing prompts, logs, or metacognitive writing strategies to enhance students’ problem-solving abilities. Keywords: writing strategies, problem-solving, pre-service teachers, mathematics.
