Abstract

Abstract: Creative Writing Process among Pre-service EFL Teachers in the Indonesian Context: A translanguaging approach. Translanguaging has been common practice in EFL environment, especially in the process of teaching and learning. This paper aims to investigate pre-service teachers’ translanguaging practices and attitudes toward the pedagogical approach in EFL Creative Writing Class. This study is conducted through a qualitative design with three steps of data collection; giving creative writing project, classroom observation, and interview. The sample in this study is pre-service English teachers of Lampung University. The data analysis are done by highlighting the translanguaging practice among students during the process of short-story production. The analyzed data show that translanguaging occurs in every phase of the writing process. The participants of this study applied translanguaging not only to develop their short-story, but also to give feedback to their classmates’ works. Abstract

Creative Thinking in Prospective Mathematics Teachers: Flexibility in Solving Systems of Linear Equations. Objectives: The main aim of this research is to determine the flexibility of prospective mathematics teachers in solving systems of linear equations. Apart from that, this research also aims to find factors that are taken into consideration by prospective mathematics teachers in determining the method for solving systems of linear equations. Methods: Data collection techniques are carried out through tests. The test is used to determine the flexibility or number of methods used by prospective mathematics teachers in solving systems of linear equations. Qualitative descriptive methodology and interviews with prospective mathematics teachers were used in this research to interpret the results and analyze the factors considered by prospective mathematics teachers in choosing the method used to solve systems of linear equations. Findings:The results of this research reveal that prospective mathematics teachers have 6 methods that can be used to solve systems of linear equations. Conclusion: The factors taken into consideration by teachers in determining the chosen method are based on three numerical factors, namely the number of variables to be searched for, the number of operations to be used and the number of steps to be carried out in solving a system of linear equations. Keywords: creative thinking, flexibility, mathematics. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i2.202459

Abstract

Abstract: Analysis on Teachers' Social Actions in Implementing Character Education to Digital Native Student in Surakarta City. Teacher’s Social Action in Implementing Character Education to Digital Native Student in Surakarta City. Objective of Research: This research aims (1) to identify the teacher’s attempt of inculcating character values to the Digital Native students having been exposed to information flow and technology, and (2) to analyze various attempts taken by teachers to inculcate the character values through Max Weber’s rational action perspective. Method: Through research method using qualitative study, the author dug data through in-depth interview and observation on the teachers’ attempt of particularly implementing character education at school. In addition, through learning process, the Project of Strengthening the Pancasila Student Profile can be chosen as a medium to inculcate the characters of Pancasila Student Profile inside the Digital Native students. Finding: The result of research mentions that the attempt taken by the teachers in inculcating character education is through learning process and beyond learning process. Beyond the learning process, the inculcation of character values is carried out through utilizing the Project of Strengthening Pancasila Student Profile. Conclusion: Every teacher’s action in inculcating the character values contains rationality, goal, and consideration in choosing the method. The most prominent consideration is based on the educator’s rationality to accommodate the rapid development of Digital Native students.  Keywords: digital native, character education, rational action, max weber.

Abstract

Abstract: English Teachers’ Identity in Pesantren: A Narrative Inquiry Study. Objective: Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) is recognized as an educational institution in Indonesia. In educational environment, Teachers have an important role for the successful in the teaching-learning process. They should construct their professionalism and identity in facing the development of education. There are numerous research studies on teacher identity. But, there is still a lack of research on teacher identity in Pesantren. Therefore, this research study aims to explore how English teachers in Pesantrnen construct their identities. Method: This research is a narrative study that involves six English teacher in Pesantren. The data were elaborated into three themes, the novice teacher, the professional learning journey to be professional teachers, and professional teachers. Finding: The examination of their construction identities revealed from the teachers’ experiences to know how teachers in Pesantren understand themselves through experiences. Abstract

Abstract: Speaking Anxiety in A Foreign Language Speaking Class: The Perspectives of Students’ And A Teacher. Objectives: This study aimed at investigating students’ speaking anxiety in a foreign language speaking class, the source of the anxiety, and the strategies to reduce their anxiety, in the perspectives of the students, themselves, and the teacher. Methods: Observation and interviews were applied in this qualitative study. The observation was conducted to choose six students as the interviewees with three categories according to students’ levels of speaking ability; high, medium, and low. The chosen students and the teacher of the speaking class were, then, interviewed to answer the research questions. Findings: The interview showed that students still experienced anxiety even though they had learned English since elementary school and had joined extra English courses or competitions. Additionally, students felt anxious due to huge gap between learning at school and in university levels. Related to the cause of students’ speaking anxiety, it was from the internal factor, like shyness, fear of being laughed, or lack of confidence. Peer pressure from friends who were likely more fluent was another factor influencing students' speaking anxiety. Conclusion: The strategies to reduce students’ speaking anxiety from their view were by practicing and motivating themselves. From the teacher's perspective, the best strategy to lessen speaking anxiety were providing counselling session and used Flipgrid, a platform, to collect speaking video tasks. Abstract

Pedagogy Evaluations by Indonesian Teachers Implementing Quality Teaching Rounds: An Initial Exploratory Qualitative Study. Objectives: QTR research in Indonesia has been limited to experimental research on selected aspects of the program. This preliminary study in a qualitative explanatory sequence aimed to describe Indonesian teachers’ individual pedagogy evaluations during a high-fidelity application of the Quality Teaching Rounds (QTR) program, using comparisons with expert evaluations.  A deductive, “top-down” approach to theme-finding provided hard data in this under-researched area, to be further investigated in later studies. Methods: Eight teachers from two schools were recruited to implement QTR. In school-based professional learning communities, teachers observed lessons, used the Quality Teaching Model to assign kodes (evaluations) to pedagogy using ‘Koding Sheets’, then discussed their kodes. Koding Sheets were collected as primary data, and teacher initial kodes verified using discussion transcripts. Expert evaluations were created by an Australian internal expert using Quality Teaching Model rubrics, observation notes and consultations with Indonesian educators and an external expert. Koding Sheets were collated and colour-coded as ‘the same’, ‘higher’, or ‘lower’ than expert kodes. Frequencies were tabulated using Excel to find overarching themes or patterns addressing the research question. Findings: Themes included: (1) Dissimilarity of teacher kodes to expert kodes; (2) Prevalence of overestimating in kodes; (3) Trends of ‘same’ kodes increased for many and decreased for some; and (4) professional learning community-based differences in trends and counts. Results suggest social constructionism explains teacher learning leading to evaluation patterns, as well as the presence and influence of language, cultural, school contextual, relational factors on teacher pedagogy evaluations. Abstract

Profile of Pre-Service Math Teachers' Conception about the Definition of Limit Functions Based on Mathematical Ability. Objective: The study aims to explore the profile of pre-service math teachers' Conception about the definition of limit functions based on mathematical ability between high and low ability and to find out their perceptions on the topic. Methods: The methods used in this study were mixed-methods in nature; quantitative and qualitative. The participants of the study are 64 pre-service math teachers who are studying in the fifth-semester academic year 2022, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Syiah Kuala University. The reason of selecting this participant is because they have gained experience studying calculus and objective analysis. The data collection for this study is obtained through math ability tests on limit conception tests and interviews. The data are analysed by using descriptive quantitative and qualitative.  The data from the interview are analysed by reducing data, exposing, interpreting, and concluding. Findings: This study reported that high pre-service math teachers group outperformed the low-ability group in terms of math tests. In addition, The pre-service math teachers’ perceptions on expressing ideas, and explaining formal definitions of the limit function and mental image were relatively good. Conclusion: The study concluded that the profile of high ability of the pre-service math teachers performed better than those low in math test competence and their understanding of the definition of limit function, mental image and the concepts of limit function and limit function relation were relatively good. Abstract

Advancement of STEM-Based Digital Module to Enhance HOTS of Prospective Elementary School Teachers. Objectives: The goal of this research was to develop a valid, practical, and effective STEM-based digital module to help prospective elementary school teachers enhance their HOTS. Methods: This was a development study employing a four-dimensional model. This study enlisted the help of five lecturers and 100 prospective elementary school teachers.  Findings: The developed STEM-based digital module is declared to be highly valid to use with score obtained is 3.38 and also said to be highly practical to utilize, with a lecturer aspect score of 95.67 and a student aspect score of 91.37. The STEM-based digital module also is declared effective in strengthening the HOTS of prospective elementary school teacher students which received an N-Gain score of 0.69 in the medium category. Conclusion: The study's findings revealed that a valid, practical, and effective STEM-based digital module has been established to enhance the HOTS of prospective elementary school teachers.Keywords: prospective teacher, digital module, STEM, HOTS.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i2.202245

Abstract

Professional Development of Novice English Teacher in Junior High School. Objectives: This study aimed at finding out novice English teacher’s understanding about professional development in a junior high school in Palembang, novice teacher’s professional development, its challenges, how challenges are met, and supports provided by school and government. Methods: In this qualitative case study, the data were collected through questionnaires, interview, and documentation and were analyzed by using Likert Scale, transcription, codification, and thematic analysis. The participants were an English novice teacher, a senior teacher, and vice principle of curriculum affair. Findings: Regardless of her good understanding, the novice teacher lacked of professional development. She encountered instructional, social status and identity, classroom management and workload challenges, which were met by joining subject teachers’ forum, while advices and consent to join teachers’ forum were given as school support. Abstract

The Novel Work Environment Model to Improve Teacher Performance: A Study at SMAN 1 Sungkai Jaya, North Lampung. Objectives: This study aims to create a good environment in order to improve teacher performance in SMA Negeri 1 Sungkai Jaya, North Lampung. In this study, a combination of two aspects of the work environment model was carried out to create a reflective and appropriate work environment model. Methods: This study uses qualitative methods with 50 respondents. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, documentation, and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). Findings: The results showed that the social environment at SMAN 1 was good enough to produce good teacher outcomes, but improving communication caused discomfort between the teacher and school principal relations. The artistic environment at SMAN 1 shows that the teachers in carrying out the assignments given by the principal are going well, in an orderly and disciplined manner, but the quality of the learning tools is better than the difficulties in time. Conclusions: Model The reflective work environment has a good status on the relationship between the principal and the teacher because the teacher and the principal are not directly related. Keywords: Reflective work environment model, school, teacher performance. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v9.i2.201906
