Abstract

Eco-Digital Pedagogy: Current Situation and Its Solution to Enhance Pre-Service Teachers’ Pedagogical Competence. Objective: This study aims to: 1) explore the existing model implemented in the classroom related to pedagogical learning, the use of technology, and environment-based learning; and 2) propose eco-digital pedagogy to improve the competence of 21st-century pre-service (trainee) teachers. Methods: This study was qualitative with didactical research design, focusing on the analysis of the implementation of pedagogical courses at the Geography Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES). The subjects of this research were selected using a purposive technique and consist of twelve students who had completed pedagogical courses. Primary data, collected from interviews, were then complemented with secondary data from previous research, books, and online articles related to implementing eco-pedagogy and digital pedagogy. Findings: The results indicate that pedagogical skills learning, technology utilization, and environment-based learning have been applied, but the intensity, variety of methods, and comprehension are relatively low. Lecturers often underutilize technology as an educational tool and do not fully comprehend the ecological principles underpinning sustainable development. Technology adaptation is limited to the use of LMS, while eco-related materials are minor and not practicable. This condition requires improvement, one of which is through eco-digital pedagogy, a combination based on digitalization and awareness of ecology. It can be implemented through several steps: 1) designing a suitable curriculum, 2) providing adequate facilities, 3) increasing hands-on practice with real and relevant situations, 4) enriching pedagogical learning methods, and 5) utilizing platforms or digital media as a teaching space and a campaign for promoting environmental awareness. Conclusion: Digital and eco-related learnings are found to be minimally implemented, thus the learning outputs are not optimal. Eco-digital pedagogy can be applied to enhance the learning quality of pedagogical courses. Keywords: eco-digital pedagogy, geography trainee teacher, 21st century.

Abstract

Examining Indonesian Teacher Roles in EFL Classroom: Insights from Elementary Teacher Narratives. Objectives: Different roles have been attributed to teachers; from knowledge transmitter to caregiver. These roles are intertwined with one another and their complexity has attracted numerous researchers to investigate. In spite of the extensive literature and studies on teacher roles, very few studies have highlighted the complexity and changing roles of teachers from the insider point of view. This study explores the insider perspective of an elementary school teacher to gain clearer insights on teacher roles. Methods: The study focuses on how teachers narrate their roles as teachers and draw emerging themes from the narration. The data of this study were collected by semi-structured interviews, classroom observation, and document analysis. Findings: Through thematic analysis, the study reveals that the teacher played many roles from planning the materials, managing the class, monitoring and evaluating the students’ progress. Conclusion: These imply that teacher professional development and teacher competence become a concern in order to optimize the teachers’ roles. Keywords: Changing teachers’ roles; elementary school teachers’ roles; narrative inquiry.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i1.202224

Abstract

Abstract: Effect of Blended Learning on Students’ Learning Outcomes: A Meta-analysis. Objective: This research aims to determine the effect of blended learning implementation in Indonesia between 2016-2020. Methods: This is a meta-analysis study and 27 articles met the criteria analyzed by Revman 5.4. This study reported effect size of blended learning on learning outcomes consisting of subgroups of education levels (elementary school, junior high school, senior high school, vocational education, and college) and subgroups of learning outcomes (knowledge, thinking ability, and attitude). Findings: The theoretical effect size score of Standard Mean Difference or SMD = 1.01 (95% CI [0.802– 1.20). P < 0.00001) for blended learning compared to conventional. Subgroup analysis obtained a high category effect size for Blended Learning’s application according to the level of education and learning achievement. Except for the effect size for attitudes belongs to the moderate category. Conclusion: This study concluded that Blended Learning positively affects knowledge mastery, thinking ability, motivation, and learning independence at all levels of education. Keywords: blended learning, learning outcomes, education level DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v11.i2.202113

Abstract

Effectiveness of Modular Approach in Teaching Primary Grades Amidst  Pandemic Education. Objectives: This study determined the effectiveness of modular approach in teaching primary grades amidst pandemic education. Specifically, this investigated the profile of the primary grade teachers, level of effectiveness of modular approach in teaching primary grades and the suggestions to enhance the implementation of printed modular learning amidst pandemic education. Methods: Descriptive survey research design was used which described data gathered  from 96 purposively selected respondents .Survey using questionnaire with 5-point Likert Scale was utilized by the study. Data were tabulated and appropriately treated using frequency count, percentage and weighted mean. These provided the most fit way of analysis and interpretation of the research data. Findings: An over-all weighted mean of 3.53 for the level of effectiveness on modular approach in teaching primary grades amidst pandemic education was computed. Conclusion: The primary grades teachers were dominated by female teachers. A high effectiveness on modular approach in teaching Grades 1,2 and 3 learners was achieved. There were also various suggestions to enhance the implementation of printed modular learning amidst pandemic education. Keywords: modular approach, modules, teaching, primary grades, pandemic education.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i2.202348

Abstract

Abstract: An Analysis of Senior High School Students’ Difficulties in Learning Historical Recount Text. Objectives: This study described the senior high school students’ difficulties while learning historical recount text in English class and analyzed the causes of their difficulties. Methods: This study used a test, a questionnaire, and an interview. Findings: This study showed that 67% of students considered historical recount text as difficult materials. Students’ average score was 52.94 or below the minimum criteria of mastery learning. 23.5% of students passed the minimum criteria, while 76.5% of students did not pass it. Students’ difficulties in the “high” level of difficulty were about the social function, text structure, and main idea. Meanwhile, grammar features and arranging text had a “moderate” level of difficulty. The causes of these difficulties were the lack of vocabulary mastery, the lack of understanding about the concept of recount text, and the lack of grammar understanding. Conclusion: Students face difficulties in reading historical recount text materials due to the lack of English vocabulary mastery, grammar, and text concept. Keywords: English, reading, historical recount text, learning difficulties, senior high school. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v11.i2.202109

Abstract

Factors Affecting the Academic Performance of Teacher Education Students in DOrSU-San Isidro Campus. Objective: This quantitative research study aimed to determine the factors affecting the academic performance of students from DOrSU-San Isidro Campus. Methods: This study made use of a quantitative type of research design specifically descriptive-survey research design. Mean and standard deviation were used in this study. Findings: It is found out that the set of factor that has the highest mean has moderate impact on elementary teacher education students’ academic performance. Conversely, the set of factors that have low impact on elementary teacher education students’ academic performance are personal condition, study habits, home-related factors and lecturer factor. Conclusions: It can be concluded that factors such as personal condition, study habits, home-related factors, and lecturer factor have low impact on the academic performance of elementary teacher education students. On the other hand, school-related factors have a moderate impact on the academic performance of elementary teacher education students. With that, schools and their administrators should look into providing students with conducive learning environment. Keywords: teacher education, academic performance, survey research design, Philippines.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i2.202316
