Abstract

Sport-class student-athletes face dual demands: maintaining academic achievement while optimizing sport performance. These demands require psychological readiness, particularly self-confidence and mental toughness. This study aimed to examine the effect of self-confidence on mental toughness and determine its contribution among sport-class students at MAN 2 Yogyakarta. A quantitative correlational design was employed with a saturated sample of 66 students from judo, taekwondo, karate, pencak silat, and football. Data were collected using self-confidence and mental toughness scales and analyzed through simple linear regression. The findings showed that self-confidence had a positive and significant effect on mental toughness, with R = 0.501, R² = 0.251, F = 21.47, and p < 0.001. Self-confidence explained 25.1% of the variance in mental toughness, while the remaining variance was influenced by other factors. The study concludes that self-confidence is an important predictor of mental toughness, although broader psychological and environmental factors should also be considered.

Abstract

Elementary students’ gross motor skills and physical fitness are important indicators of physical development, yet these outcomes may vary according to school context and gender-related movement opportunities. This study aimed to analyze differences in gross motor skills and physical fitness between students from Islamic-based elementary schools and public elementary schools based on gender. A quantitative comparative approach was employed. The sample consisted of 240 fourth-grade students from six elementary schools in Parongpong District, West Bandung Regency, selected using a two-stage cluster sampling technique. Gross motor skills were measured using the Test of Gross Motor Development 2, while physical fitness was measured using the Indonesian Physical Fitness Test Phase B. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, Levene’s homogeneity test, and independent samples t-test. The findings showed that public elementary school students obtained higher mean scores in gross motor skills than Islamic-based elementary school students, with mean scores of 24.45 and 23.76, respectively. Physical fitness also showed a similar pattern, with public schools obtaining a mean score of 20.38 and Islamic-based schools obtaining 18.35. Hypothesis testing confirmed significant differences in gross motor skills, t (78) = 3.342, p = 0.001, and physical fitness, t (78) = 7.598, p < 0.001. Gender-based comparisons also showed significant differences among male and female students. These findings indicate that school context and gender should be considered in designing adaptive and inclusive physical education programs to optimize students’ physical development.

Abstract

Smash ability in sepaktakraw is a complex attacking skill that requires the integration of anthropometric reach, lower-limb explosive power, flexibility, body coordination, and technical accuracy. This study aimed to examine the relationship between leg length, leg explosive power, and flexibility with smash ability among students of the Faculty of Sport Science, Universitas Negeri Makassar. A quantitative approach with a descriptive-correlational design was employed. The final sample consisted of 50 students with complete data and no missing values. Leg length was measured using an anthropometric procedure, leg explosive power using the vertical jump test, flexibility using a trunk flexibility test, and smash ability using a sepaktakraw smash skill test. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, Pearson correlation, simple regression, and multiple regression. The findings showed that leg length, leg explosive power, and flexibility were positively and significantly related to smash ability, with correlation coefficients of r = 0.552, r = 0.676, and r = 0.607, respectively. The multiple regression model indicated that the three predictors simultaneously explained 60.9% of the variance in smash ability. These findings indicate that sepaktakraw smash performance is more strongly supported by functional physical capacities, particularly lower-limb explosive power and flexibility, than by anthropometric characteristics alone.
