Abstract

This study aims to analyze the ability of hotel employees in Ogan Ilir, South Sumatra, in explaining guest room facilities using English. English is an important skill for hotel employees to improve communication with foreign guests, especially in the area's growing hospitality sector. The research method used is a qualitative approach with data collection through interviews, observations and documentation. The participants of this study were 15 employees from several hotels in Ogan Ilir. This study measures their ability to use terms related to hotel facilities, such as room types, equipment, and available services. The results of the study show that the majority of employees have basic skills in using English, but there are still difficulties in explaining room facilities in detail and professionally. Some of the factors that affect these abilities are the lack of language training, formal education level, and work experience in the hospitality industry. This study recommends the existence of a special needs-based English training program in the hospitality sector to improve employee communication skills. This finding is also expected to be a consideration for hotel management in improving service quality through the development of human resources who are more skilled in English.

Abstract

This research employs a qualitative descriptive method aimed at analyzing spelling and morphological errors in online news articles published by Tribun Timur.com, specifically the Tribun Sidrap edition dated February 3, 2025. The study focuses on language errors involving the use of letters, word formation, affixation, punctuation, and other elements related to the Indonesian Spelling System (EYD) Edition V. A total of 25 news articles were selected purposively as the data source. The data were collected through reading, note-taking, and documentation techniques, and analyzed using data reduction, classification, and interpretation procedures. The findings reveal several types of language errors, including seven errors in the use of capital letters, three italicization errors, five-word formation errors, nine affixation mistakes, five hyphenation or compound word errors, one error in preposition use, three numerical/punctuation issues, and two comma-related punctuation errors. These mistakes suggest a lack of adherence to standardized Indonesian language rules in the media, which could affect the credibility of news articles and influence public language habits. The study concludes that consistent application of EYD rules is essential to improve the quality of language in online news writing. It recommends that journalists and editors implement rigorous editing practices to reduce errors and promote accurate language use. Furthermore, future research is encouraged to explore broader linguistic aspects such as syntactic and semantic errors in various media formats to support national language development and public literacy.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the English learning needs from the perspectives of students and teachers at SMKN 1 Dampal Selatan, MA Al-Ittihad DDI Soni, and SMA Negeri 1 Dampal Selatan. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach using data collected through questionnaires distributed to students and interviews conducted with English teachers. The focus of this study includes academic needs such as mastery of the four main English skills, and non-academic needs like motivation, environmental support, and self-confidence, as well as perceptions regarding the use of technology in learning. The results indicate a significant gap between students’ and teachers’ expectations. Students tend to prefer practical, technology-based, and work-oriented materials, while teachers emphasize grammar mastery, basic language skills, and the need for adequate learning media. Additionally, students expressed difficulties in vocabulary acquisition and low confidence in speaking, whereas teachers stressed the importance of enhancing motivation and learning facilities. These findings highlight the necessity to adjust curricula and teaching methods to better align with students’ real-world needs and support more effective English learning.

Abstract

Algorithmic journalism has transformed the Indonesian digital media landscape, creating a paradox between the democratization of information and the restriction of freedom. This study analyzes the phenomenon through the lens of Michel Foucault's theory of power, using a qualitative research method with a critical constructionism paradigm. The study of platforms such as Detik.com, TikTok, and Facebook reveals that algorithms operate as a “digital panopticon,” monitoring and disciplining user behavior through biopower technology. Filter bubbles and algorithmic bias create a “regime of truth” that shapes digital subjectivity and controls the distribution of information. However, Foucault's concept of parrhesia offers strategies of resistance through digital literacy and self-management practices. This research contributes to understanding algorithms not as neutral technical instruments but as power mechanisms that shape digital social reality. The practical implications include developing algorithmic transparency regulations and strengthening public participation in technology oversight.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of utilizing English songs to enhance pronunciation skills and to examine students interest in learning pronunciation through English songs. The research was conducted using a mixed methods approach at SMPN 1 Panca Rijang in the academic year 2024/2025. A total of 22 ninth-grade students participated in the study. The quantitative data were obtained through pre-test and post-test pronunciation assessments, while the qualitative data were collected from interviews with five students who achieved the highest post-test scores. The quantitative analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and a paired sample t-test. The result revealed a significant enhancement in students pronunciation scores, with the mean score increasing from 8.18 in the pre-test to 12.91 in the post-test. The mean difference was 4.727, and the t-test analysis produced a t-value of 18.44 and a p-value of 1.89 × 10⁻¹⁴. Since the p-value was far below the significance level of 0.05, the null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted, confirming that the use of English songs significantly enhanced students pronounciation performance. The qualitative findings indicated that showed strong interest and positive responses toward learning pronunciation through songs. They expressed that songs made learning more enjoyable, easier to follow, and more motivating. Some students also mentioned that the rhythm and repetition in songs helped them imitate native like pronunciation more confidently.the findings demonstrate that using English songs in the classroom can both enhance pronunciation skills and foster student interest in pronunciation learning. This suggests that songs can serve as an effective and engaging medium in EFL instruction.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of one-on-one interaction strategies in enhancing English speaking skills among EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students at MTs YMPI Rappang. The study identifies the challenges faced by students in speaking English, such as lack of confidence, limited speaking opportunities, and psychological barriers like anxiety. Using a qualitative approach, the research applies personalized interaction strategies in one-on-one sessions between teachers and students. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. Findings suggest that one-on-one interactions significantly improve students' speaking proficiency, boost their confidence, and reduce affective barriers. The study demonstrates that peer-based interactions and tailored feedback are crucial for fostering language fluency, accuracy, and spontaneous speech. This approach aligns with sociocultural theories of learning, particularly Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and Long’s Interaction Hypothesis. The research contributes to the development of practical strategies for teaching English in secondary schools, offering insights into effective pedagogical methods for enhancing communication skills among EFL learners.

Abstract

Early Childhood Education is a crucial foundation for a child's holistic development. This sector faces various challenges, including diverse individual needs, limited resources, and teacher qualifications. With the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the question arises whether this technology can be an effective solution to overcome these obstacles. This journal explores the potential of AI in addressing ECE challenges, analysing both the opportunities and risks involved. We discuss how AI can support personalized learning, enhance accessibility, and alleviate the workload of educators. However, we also emphasize the importance of maintaining human interaction, data ethics, and mitigating bias. This journal concludes that while AI holds significant promise as a supportive tool, its implementation must be carried out carefully, integrated thoughtfully, and always prioritize the holistic development of the child.
