Abstract

In the context of multicultural family life, language use serves not only as a means of communication but also as a reflection of the cultural values that exist within society. One form of such values is embodied in unggah-ungguh or the linguistic etiquette practiced in daily interactions. This study aims to describe the forms and patterns of Bugis language etiquette within multicultural families in Sidenreng Rappang Regency, with an emphasis on the application of the values of Sipakaraja (mutual respect) and Siri’ (a sense of shame as a means of upholding honor). The study is intended to provide an understanding of the preservation of Bugis cultural values through language practices in multicultural families, while also enriching the fields of sociolinguistics and cultural acculturation studies. The approach employed is descriptive qualitative, using Berry’s (1997) theory of acculturation as the analytical framework. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews, and then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the forms of unggah-ungguh in multicultural families are reflected through traditional greetings such as “Puang” and “Daeng,” as well as other verbal and non-verbal etiquette such as the use of the polite expression “Tabe’,” soft tones of voice, and bowing gestures. The patterns vary according to the acculturation strategies adopted, such as adaptive and flexible patterns in the integration strategy, exclusive patterns in the separation strategy, and neutral or functional patterns in the marginalization strategy. This study involved data from 30 multicultural families, with integration being the most dominant acculturation strategy (21 families), followed by marginalization (7 families) and separation (2 families). The study affirms that the practice of unggah-ungguh is not merely a linguistic habit but a concrete representation of the process of acculturation and the preservation of local cultural values in cross-cultural communication.

Abstract

Language functions as the primary means of communication. Communication can be defined as an activity of conveying expressions or intentions to the interlocutor. However, it is undeniable that at times, the interlocutor may fail to understand the speaker’s intended meaning. This phenomenon can occur due to several factors, both from the speaker and the interlocutor. To comprehend the intended meaning in an utterance, a pragmatic study can be conducted. In pragmatics, there is a topic that examines the meaning or intention behind someone’s utterance, namely speech acts. Speech acts are classified into three main types: locutionary acts, illocutionary acts, and perlocutionary acts. Film, as an audiovisual communication medium, presents verbal interactions that are interesting to study because they are rich in dialogue, social interaction, and communication context. One film that is particularly interesting to analyze is Agak Laen. This film offers a storyline filled with humor and wit while reflecting distinctive social and cultural dynamics. Based on this, the researcher is interested in conducting a pragmatic study focusing on illocutionary and perlocutionary speech acts. Illocutionary acts are divided into five types: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. Perlocutionary acts are also divided into three types: verbal perlocution, non-verbal perlocution, and verbal-non-verbal perlocution. This research aims to identify and understand the types of illocutionary and perlocutionary speech acts contained in the film Agak Laen. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection using the observation and note-taking method. Data analysis follows the Miles and Huberman model, which consists of three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing.

Abstract

This study examines the use of euphemism in crime news published on online media platforms, with a particular focus on Detik.com. The purpose of this research is to identify and analyze the forms and functions of euphemism that journalists employ to present sensitive or potentially disturbing information in a more polite, neutral, and socially acceptable manner. The data were collected from crime-related news articles published in February 2025 through a reading and note-taking technique. The analysis involved three stages: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that euphemism appears in various forms, including abbreviations, loanwords, foreign terms, metaphors, and periphrasis. These linguistic strategies serve multiple functions: softening harsh expressions, concealing sensitive information, maintaining diplomacy, providing educational value, and reducing social anxiety. Overall, the study highlights the role of euphemism in shaping public perception of crime news and its importance in upholding journalistic ethics. The results are expected to contribute to a better understanding of how language use in the media influences communication, objectivity, and sensitivity in news reporting.

Abstract

This study is about a social class that plays a very important role in the life and death of the main character in Thomas Hardy’s the Mayor of Casterbridge. It is called to have an important role as it triggers the character to survive though eventually; he must die for it. Using the capitalist mode of production and descriptive and dramatic approach to picture the social class in the society as well as the effect of it, the study shows that the main character’s life is triggered by the social class in the society, that is, wealth possession. The more property a man gets the more respects he gets from the society. On the contrary, the less property he gets the less respects he gets. It, then, becomes the main issue of the people in the novel to behave according to the social class driving the main character to the downfall. Finally, although the study has the novelty since no previous studies use the same theory as the researcher’s study, the study gives the readers moral lesson that sometimes in a society, wealth is worth more whilst in another society is not. Besides, this novelty is to develop the study of literature.

Abstract

Brand recall plays a crucial role in building a strong relationship between consumers and brands. One important aspect of brand recall is the use of a tagline, which aims to create a lasting impression and strengthen brand recall. This study delves deeper into the power of the tagline "Seleraku" in building brand recall for Indomie products. Using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, this research analyzes the deeper meaning behind the tagline. The findings show that the tagline "Seleraku" not only refers to taste but also creates a strong emotional connection between consumers and the Indomie brand. Through an analysis of advertisement content, it was found that the consistent use of visuals and text reinforces the connotative meaning of the tagline, such as pride in being a local product and personal attachment. This connotative meaning plays a significant role in shaping consumer memory of the Indomie brand. Furthermore, the study also found that the consistency of the tagline’s use across various advertising media contributed to Indomie's success in creating high brand awareness. Therefore, it can be concluded that the tagline "Seleraku" is a key factor in Indomie's success in building customer loyalty and maintaining its dominant position in the instant noodle market. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of semiotics in marketing communication, particularly in the context of building brand recall.

Abstract

National Education functions to develop abilities and shape the character and civilization of a dignified nation to make the nation's life intelligent. The need to increase insight and knowledge certainly begins with the Literacy Movement which can be started by reading. However, according to UNESCO data, the reading interest of Indonesian people is very concerning, only 0.001%. This means that out of 1,000 Indonesians, only 1 person is an avid reader. Ironically, according to the Ministry of Communication and Information, although the interest in reading books is low, wear social data reveals that Indonesians can stare at gadget screens for approximately 9 hours a day. Gadget addiction by children today also has an impact on the social and cultural environment so that their understanding of local culture begins to fade. Thus, there is a need for innovative and interesting media to attract students' reading interest by highlighting local wisdom. The purpose of this study was to analyze the application of digital-based folklore media in increasing students' interest in reading. This study was conducted using a mix-method method on 20 fourth-grade students of SDN 1 Rantepao. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews, tests, and documentation. The results of this study were an increase in students' interest in reading after using the media. Digital-based folklore by utilizing interactive technology and interesting visual elements is used as an alternative learning media to increase student participation in reading activities. This research is useful for other schools that want to use digital-based learning media as well as a forum for preserving culture.
