Abstract

Adolescent health can be influenced by diet and supported by social and economic factors. Good nutritional status will affect learning achievement, productivity, and the overall quality of life of adolescents. Adolescent health is strongly influenced by a healthy diet and is linked to socioeconomic support factors in adolescents. According to the Ministry of Health, the adolescent age group starts from the age of 10 years to less than 18 years. Indicators of nutritional status assessment in healthy adolescents can be characterized by weight, height, and Body Mass Index. The Objective aims to analyze the relationship between socioeconomic status and diet with the nutritional status of 10th grade adolescents at MAN 1 Samarinda. This research was conducted on October 3, 2024. The population in this study were 10th grade adolescents at MAN 1 Samarinda with a total of 85 subjects. The research design used was analytic observational with a quantitative approach. The method used is Cross Sectional. The research instruments or tools used in this study were questionnaires and anthropometric measurements, namely body weight and height to determine BMI. The results of the bivariate analysis using the Chi-Square test showed that socioeconomic status represented by respondents' daily allowance, when associated with Body Mass Index resulted in a Pvalue of 0.556 > α (0.05). Meanwhile, eating behavior represented by respondents' breakfast habits, when associated with Body Mass Index resulted in a P-value of 0.039 < α (0.05). Based on the research conducted, it shows that there is a relationship between socioeconomic status and diet with body mass index which is related to breakfast with body mass index. So, it is expected to provide insight to students and parents on the importance of breakfast in order to improve the quality of life of students. When students have a body mass index that is less, it will certainly affect the spirit, as well as student achievement at school and in the future.

Abstract

Background : Teenagers undergo complex transitions involving changes in various aspects including cognitive, emotional, social, and moral dimensions. They often seek out novel experiences, which may include high-risk behaviors like pre-marital sex, potentially leading to negative consequences for their reproductive health. Social environments, particularly peer groups, significantly influence teenage smoking habits more than mass media or family influences. According to WHO surveys, approximately 17.5% of global populations are adolescents, with higher proportions found in developing countries. Teenage smoking poses significant health risks such as increased blood pressure, heart rate, and cancer risk. Objective : It is hoped that similar educational programs will continue enhancing teen awareness while reducing future healthcare concerns. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : An intervention program named CERAH (Smart Reproduction Against Tobacco For Healthy Living) was launched. This inclusive educational approach involves presenting materials through interactive sessions and distributing iron supplements (Tablet Tambah Darah – TTD). Results : Evaluation results indicate substantial increases in students’ understanding after interventions—rising from an average score of 52% before training to 63% afterward. These findings align with previous research demonstrating positive changes in teen knowledge about tobacco-related health dangers following health education initiatives. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : there is an increase in knowledge regarding Adolescent Reproductive Health and the Dangers of Smoking. Before educational activities were carried out, the level of knowledge regarding adolescent reproductive health and the dangers of smoking was 52%, and after educational activities were carried out it increased to 63%. In this way, there was an increase in the knowledge of pupils and students by 11%. This shows that the outcome of CEAH's educational activities was successful. It is hoped that educational activities like this can continue to be carried out and be sustainable in educating teenagers in order to achieve teenagers who understand the importance of maintaining reproductive health and the dangers of smoking. If the program is desired, it is recommended that continuous collaboration be established between the implementing team and the UPT. Semoi Dua Health Center.

Abstract

Background : The mining area expands to more than 5 million hectares zoned for coal concession in East Kalimantan. East Kalimantan is the one of province that exist in tropical rainforest areas. The mining coal covers most of the region of East Kalimantan, including Samarinda the capital city of the province and Kutai Kartanegara the region that has a bigger proportion of regional income from the mining coal activities. Furthermore, Kutai Kartanegara has a coal mining area wider than Samarinda due to the company's responsibility to contribute to its surrounding environment. Mining often leads to significant changes to a society's social and economic structure. Social equity requires that such changes enhance overall social well-being, including the availability of adequate infrastructure, health services, and education, rather than only benefiting a select few or particular parties. Objective : This study aims to compare the people’s welfare of those who live closest to the mining area in Samarinda City and Kutai Kartanegara Regency, including their socioeconomic status and accessibility to public facilities. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : This was an observational study with a cross-sectional approach. Data was collected by survey with structured questionnaires in Samarinda city and Kutai Kartanegara regency which is close to the mining area. As much as 218 respondents were collected from four different areas in Samarinda and 232 respondents were collected from six different areas in Kutai Kartanegara. The samples were selected by accidental sampling of those living in the areas. The questionnaire created some questions about the respondent’s characters (age, sex, education level, monthly income, home ownership) and how have they accessed the public facility (market, school, public health centre) using four-choice answers (very hard, hard, easy and very easy). The data was analyzed using the Chi-square Test to identify whether there were statistically significant differences between each variable in Samarinda City and Kutai Kartanegara Regency. Results : The results showed that statistically there were different proportions between Samarinda City and Kutai Kartanegara Regency in terms of education level (p 0.034), monthly income (p 0.015), market accessibility (p 0.000), school accessibility (p 0.023), and public health centre accessibility (p 0.000). There is only one variable that has no difference in home ownership (p 0.777). Regarding home ownership, there is no difference between the respondents in Samarinda and Kutai Kartanegara. They have their own home in common, only 23.9% of people do not have their own home in Samarinda and 25% in Kutai Kartanegara. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : The study implies that there is inequality of welfare and public access, especially in Kutai Kartanegara Regency compared to Samarinda City. This may lead to differences in income and education levels. Accessing facilities that support equity will be more challenging when communities are located or live close to mining areas. Thus, the attention of local government and mining companies is needed for further development of welfare and access to public facilities in the future.
