Abstract

Worship in the social aspect of Muslim student life has frequently been perceived as confined to vertical rituals (hablun minallah) rather than social practices (hablun minannas). This research aims to analyze how Muslim students interpret worship, particularly prayer, fasting, and charity, and how this interpretation is reflected in their social interactions and student activities. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design at three universities, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation, and then analyzed thematically. The research findings indicate that students who comprehensively understand worship tend to have higher levels of empathy, social care, and a sense of collective responsibility. Worship performed with reflective awareness brings inner peace and fosters social piety, such as honesty in organizations, fairness toward others, and active participation in philanthropic activities and community service. This finding confirms that worship is not merely an individual spiritual obligation but rather an important foundation in shaping social ethics and building a civilized, inclusive, and harmonious campus culture.

Abstract

The Muhammadiyah education system has long been considered a key instrument not only in knowledge transfer but also in the reproduction of Islamic social movements in Indonesia. This study aims to synthesize the findings of scientific literature regarding the dual role of the system: as an engine for cadre formation and as an agent for social transformation. The method used is a Systematic Literature Review with a qualitative approach to journal articles, theses, and dissertations published between 2014-2024, sourced from Google Scholar and Garuda Portal databases. The synthesis results indicate that: (1) Cadre formation is built through a coherent trilogy of mechanisms ideological curriculum (Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan), activism in autonomous organizations (IPM/IMM), and environmental role modeling; (2) Social transformation manifests in a graded spectrum, from charitable services and economic empowerment to policy advocacy, executed by educational outputs through Muhammadiyah's philanthropic network; (3) These two functions form a self-sustaining dialectical cycle, where education produces cadres, cadres become agents of change, and the success of that change reproduces legitimacy and new resources to attract the next generation of cadres. This study concludes that the sustainability of the Muhammadiyah movement stems from the capacity of its education system to function as a self-reproducing ecosystem. These findings provide a theoretical contribution in the form of an analytical model for the sustainability of education-based social movements and practical implications for strengthening the institutional capacity of community organizations.

Abstract

This study investigates the manifestation of community empowerment rooted in the living turats tradition through the Ngaji Kitab gathering on Wage Thursday Nights at Miftahul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, Probolinggo. This initiative emerged as an existential response to the community's yearning for deeper and structured religious understanding, particularly in fiqh and akhlak derived from the Kitab Kuning. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach with a sociology of ereignis orientation, the research involves immersive observation, informal interviews, and documentation to capture the congregation's lived experience. The findings reveal that the Sullam Taufiq gathering is not merely a routine, but a moment of disclosure where the transmission of wisdom occurs through communicative methods, local vernacular, and concrete analogies that bridge classical texts with daily life. The resonance of this activity extends to strengthening social cohesion and empowering micro-economies, underscoring that the turats tradition holds vital potential as a medium for shaping religious literacy and cementing the social fabric of rural communities.

Abstract

Learning of Islamic Religious Education and Character (Pendidikan Agama Islam dan Budi Pekerti/PAIBP) at the elementary school level requires the application of approaches that are not only normative and doctrinal but also contextual and aligned with students’ developmental stages. One of the essential topics in Grade IV is puberty (akil balig), which is closely related to students’ biological, psychological, social, and moral aspects. This topic requires a comprehensive learning strategy so that it can be understood appropriately and meaningfully. This article aims to examine the implementation of an interdisciplinary approach in teaching puberty material in the PAIBP subject for Grade IV elementary school students. The research method employed is a literature review by analyzing sources such as Islamic education books, PAIBP curriculum documents, and scholarly articles relevant to interdisciplinary approaches in education. The findings indicate that the interdisciplinary approach is able to integrate Islamic values with other disciplines, including Natural Sciences, Physical and Health Education, and Social Studies. Such integration makes puberty learning more holistic, contextual, and relevant to students’ developmental needs, while also helping students understand personal changes from both scientific and religious perspectives.

Abstract

This study aims to construct a philosophical framework of lifelong learning through a meta-synthesis of key concepts in the Qur'an using the thematic interpretation (tafsir maudhu'i) approach, while identifying points of convergence and divergence with contemporary educational philosophy discourse. Employing a philosophical meta-synthesis method with systematic literature review, this research collects and analyzes Qur'anic verses on knowledge, intellect, and learning, and compares them with paradigms of progressivism, humanism, and critical education. The findings indicate that the Qur'an constructs a holistic, integrative, and transcendentally teleological concept of lifelong education (based on ‘ubūdiyyah and khalīfah). Significant convergence is found in the emphasis on active, contextual, learner-centered, and decentralized learning. However, the Qur'an offers a theocentric foundation that provides deep meaning and intrinsic motivation, while also serving as a correction to the tendencies of extreme instrumentalism and secularism in some contemporary streams. The resulting synthesis offers a paradigm of lifelong education that is liberating, meaningful, and relevant for developing educational policies and practices in contemporary Muslim societies.

Abstract

The integration of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) and Natural Sciences (IPA) is a strategic approach to eliminating the dichotomy of knowledge and shaping students who excel both cognitively and spiritually. This study aims to examine the forms, models, impacts, and challenges of implementing IRE-IPA integration through the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method using the PRISMA protocol. Data were sourced from Google Scholar, SINTA, and Scopus, yielding 25 relevant articles from the last ten years, which were analyzed using content analysis techniques. The review results indicate that integration is generally implemented by linking cosmic verses (ayat kauniyah) with scientific concepts, instilling monotheistic values in natural phenomena, and applying integrative thematic learning. This practice has been shown to have a positive impact on enhancing understanding of scientific concepts, strengthening religious attitudes, and shaping student character. However, significant challenges were identified, including limitations in teacher competency, a lack of integrative teaching materials, and suboptimal curriculum support. This study contributes a comprehensive mapping of research findings and serves as a conceptual reference for developing integrative learning in schools and madrasas to strengthen the synergy between science and religion.

Abstract

This research examines the cultural transformation of pesantren in internalizing multiculturalism values in the digital disruption era. The research focus is directed toward changes in cultural, pedagogical patterns, and the role of pesantren leadership in responding to the dynamics of diversity and digital technological developments. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method thru in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis. The research findings indicate that pesantren are undergoing a cultural shift from a hierarchical traditional pattern toward a more dialogical, inclusive, and adaptive culture thru the integration of moderate Islamic values, the utilization of digital media, and the strengthening of digital literacy and ethics. This transformation strengthens the role of pesantren as agents of religious moderation, but still faces obstacles such as the digital competency gap and limited contextual learning modules. The research conclusion confirms that the success of internalizing multiculturalism values in pesantren is highly determined by the visionary leadership of the kiai, the readiness of human resources, and institutional policy support. Therefore, this research recommends strengthening digital literacy, developing a multiculturalism-based pesantren curriculum, and implementing sustainable cultural transformation strategies to ensure that pesantren remain relevant and contribute to building an inclusive society in the digital age.

Abstract

This article examines the relationship between Islamic schools and local cultural traditions through a literature review focusing on patterns of rejection, acceptance, and accommodation. The findings reveal that some Islamic schools reject local traditions that are viewed as lacking normative foundations in Islamic teachings, while others accept traditions considered not contradictory to Islamic principles. Additionally, a third pattern—accommodation—shows how certain schools selectively reinterpret or modify local traditions to align with Islamic values. This literature review highlights that the interaction between Islamic education and local culture is strongly influenced by ideological orientation, socio-cultural context, and the religious paradigm adopted by each institution. The study concludes that the relationship between Islamic schools and local traditions is dynamic and continues to evolve alongside societal changes and the development of Islamic thought.

Abstract

The implementation of school uniforms and dress code regulations in Islamic educational institutions is often understood merely as the fulfillment of religious norms. However, these practices also have important social functions in shaping students’ behavior and social life. This study aims to analyze the social functions of school uniforms and dress codes in Islamic educational institutions from the perspective of the sociology of education. The research employs a qualitative library research method through the analysis of academic books, scholarly journal articles, and official documents of Islamic educational institutions. Data analysis is conducted using content analysis and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that school uniforms and dress codes function as mechanisms for the internalization of moral values, the formation of collective identity, social control, the cultivation of discipline, and the creation of social equality within the school environment. Furthermore, dress practices contribute to the transfer of institutional values into students’ social lives in the wider community. Thus, school uniforms and dress codes can be regarded as a form of social investment in character formation, indicating that Islamic education is oriented not only toward academic achievement but also toward the development of individuals with strong social and moral awareness.
