Abstract

This research was aimed at investigating students‟ learning style, investigating students‟ achievement on English for Profession Course and seeing whether there is significant difference on students‟ achievement across different learning style. This research used a convergent mixed method design. The data were taken using questionnaire of learning style and achievement test. The findings of this study showed that from 37 students, 17 students were auditory learners, 15 students were visual learners and 5 students were kinaesthetic learners. Further, the mean score of achievement test for auditory and visual learners showed that they can be categorized into good achievement while the mean score of kinaesthetic learners showed that they can be categorized into very good achievement. Here, the visual learners have the lowest mean score of 80.67 and the kinaesthetic learners have the highest mean score of 86.00. Meanwhile, the auditory learners were in between with 82.35 of mean score. Finally, one-way Anova analysis is used to test the hypothesis and it showed that the Fcount < Ftable (0.335 < 3.28). Thus, H0 is accepted and it can be concluded that there is no significant difference on students‟ achievement in English for Profession course across the three learning styles of auditory, visual and kinaesthetic.

Abstract

Metacognitive strategies can help students learn autonomously, so they have been studied in second language learning. However, mapping research trends and future challenges on this issue is rare. This study aims to conduct a bibliometric study using metacognitive strategies in second language learning. Scopus papers from the past decade provide data. Descriptive statistics and Vosviewer were used to analyse data. The results showed six research clusters: (1) the use of metacognitive strategies in achieving learning outcomes, (2) students’ motivation and awareness in a second language, (3) teaching writing, (4) learning interventions and their effects on students’ comprehension and abilities, (5) learning activities, problems, and reflections in learning a second language, and (6) courses related to learning a second language. Cluster 6 has the weakest relationship with other clusters in their study. Year-to-year research themes developed. Research focuses on managing course programs in the early five years by utilising metacognitive strategies, technology, motivation, and student awareness. From mid-2018 to 2019, research trends have developed in learning to write. After that, there are no new research trends to date. Trends address second language learning outcomes, student motivation and self-awareness, learning interventions, and their effects. Student issues research themes are rarer.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has made various changes in all aspects of life, such as economy, social, politics, lifestyle and education. This can be seen from the government urging the public to limit their activities and enforce self-isolation so as to encourage increased access to technology. Technology has become a very important role and is needed in the current situation because the government urges to reduce social activities. Likewise in the field of education, with the Covid-19 pandemic, all learning processes at all education levels are conducted online. This is the basis for the findings of several previous studies related to the emergence of several new terms used by the government and socialized to the public related to pandemics. From those several previous studies, the researchers saw that there was no research related to the level of public understanding of new terms that appeared during the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, this study aims to determine the level of student understanding of new terms that emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study used a survey method for students at University of Dehasen Bengkulu using a questionnaire. From the research result, it can be concluded that most students at University of Dehasen Bengkulu, specifically Physical Education Study Program do not know the new terms. This is because many of Physical Education students are in remote areas which are very affected by the weather and electricity, so accessing information on TV and the internet often faces obstacles.

Curriculum 2013 has been implemented in both primary and secondary schools in Indonesia. To execute this, teachers are supposed to be the only medium that has a major role in running this curriculum. However, they do not seem to have well preparations to implement the 2013 curriculum. Some fundamental aspects in this curriculum such as planning lesson and teaching materials need to have more attention in order to run the program well. Moreover, teachers should be well informed regarding these aspects, yet the implementation of 2013 curriculum in English teaching learning is not completely perfect. Considering the issue above, this research aims to investigate English teachers‟ perceptions towards developing lesson plans and teaching materials. A questionnaire was used to collect the data about their insights on developing lesson plan and teaching materials. To triangulate the data, this research also administered an interview. The finding indicates that the English teachers tended to feel that structuring lesson plan is not an easy task. They sometimes felt burdensome in modifying the lessons and teaching materials. Abstract

It not uncommonly known that Indonesia is among countries with English is a foreign language or in other words English is not the language of instruction. As the effect of globalization, the importance of English in Indonesia comes to the growing seen from the increased needs of English such as the language competency is one of core requirements to get certain jobs or academic degrees. The current goal of Indonesia government is to follow the lead of neighbor countries in the 21st century trend in tourism and health which is interchangeably called “medical tourism” or “health tourism”. It proves to pull millions of dollars annually to its destination countries. At some point, English language competency can be assumed to play significant roles in medical tourists’ choices of destinations. This study discusses Indonesia’s potential to become an additional medical tourism destination, as indicated by recent government policy declarations. The author investigated this issue by studying a public hospital in Indonesia that was recently internationally certified approximately two years ago. The study focuses on potentials and challenges of Indonesian hospital nurses in fulfilling the demands of English language competency. Research methods included use of questionnaires, along with semi-structured and informal interviews. In the potential aspect, the nurses reported that they valued English as useful in their jobs even though they admitted that most of them were still less proficient.  The willingness to learn and the attempt to improve English in the workplace had been seen as a potential. Moreover, nurses suggested ways that the institution and government can do to help them with the English improvement. The overall finding is that Indonesia appears to be trying hard to improve its readiness for medical tourism. The findings could also reflect the situations in countries where English is a foreign language in struggling to fulfill the demands of nurses’ competency in the 21st century.

Abstract

This study explores the TPACK of EFL teachers in two distinct school districts during the Covid-19 pandemic. This study comprised two English teachers from rural and urban schools in Bengkulu, Indonesia, with 2 to 10 years of experience teaching English. The researchers collected the data utilizing an interview-based comparative descriptive methodology to address research questions. Following the interview, the collected data was transcribed. The findings of this study indicate that urban teachers have a higher level of TPACK than rural teachers in terms of their ability to use technology and manage classes when teaching English during the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly concerning online learning applications such as Zoom meetings, WhatsApp, Google Classroom, and the YouTube app.On the other hand, rural EFL teachers have insufficient TPACK. Due to a lack of time to design technology lesson plans, technology training, and inadequate supporting facilities and infrastructure, such as limited internet network availability and power outages, teachers lack knowledge of technological advances for online learning. Even though teachers in rural and urban areas had never utilized an online learning system during the previous school year, they had varying capacities for addressing problems that developed while utilizing this system.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is find out how audio-visual aid can enhance students listening skills of EFL learners. From the observation, it was found that most students have bad scores in listening skills and low motivation in following listening materials. The researchers, then, employed the classroom action research method to fix the problem directly. This research was conducted in the English department of UIN FAS Bengkulu. The population used by the researchers was students in the third semester who got listening class. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, choosing the criteria or specific considerations so that they do not go through the selection process as done in a random technique. In this case, the researchers chose class 3b because it had the lowest grades and motivation among the other classes. Two cycles were done to handle the problem. The instrument used to gain the data by using a test, observation sheet, and interview. The data comparison from pre-assessment to final assessment shows a positive impact of the strategy on students' scores and motivation in the teaching-learning process of listening.
