Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of English use in Indonesian television advertisements, specifically analyzing the brand Kopi Good Day through a sociolinguistic approach. As globalization influences marketing strategies, the incorporation of foreign languages, particularly English, has become prevalent in Indonesia. While prior research has examined the effectiveness of foreign language advertising, there is a notable gap in understanding how this practice impacts local cultural values and consumer perceptions within Indonesia's multilingual context. The purpose of this study is to explore how attitudes and cultural identity among Indonesian audiences aged 18-35 are influenced by the use of the English language. To this effect, the present research has adopted a qualitative approach because it involves content analysis of selected Kopi Good Day advertisements and indepth interviews with around 20 to 30 individuals from various socio-economic backgrounds. The initial results show that 60% of the respondents believe that the use of the English language association makes the brand sound modern; while 30% are of the view that such an association will in due course undermine the cultural values at the local level. Another 70% said this would make the product more attractive and trendy for a younger audience, but 20% find it confusing since not everyone understands English very well. These findings testify to the greater complication in the interrelationship of global branding and local identity and point to the need for sensitivity on the part of advertisers to such dynamics. In this case, this study contributes to developing culturally sensitive advertising strategies that resonate with diverse consumer demographics in Indonesia, providing insights into how foreign language use in advertising can reflect and shape cultural identity in a rapidly globalizing society.

Abstract

Mastery of English in the era of digital-based communication and technological advances is very important for students at Madrasah Aliyah of Darussalam Islamic Boarding School, Kepahiang, Bengkulu. Unfortunately, the students are used to memorizing grammar structures (Nahwu and Shorof) when learning Arabic, and when learning English, especially in reading skills, they are more likely to memorize and prioritize grammar than the flexibility to explore language and convey it into spoken and written language. Then, the teaching materials used by the English teacher as learning media in English subjects, especially in reading competence, tend to focus more on and burden students with grammatical patterns and do not develop students' skills in reading based on experience, the context of life, or their needs in communicating. This study aimed to assist in the implementation of the results of the development of English reading materials with Islamic materials and values for students at Islamic boarding schools based on Communicative Language Teaching to reduce the problems faced by students in learning English reading. This research used the Participatory Action Research method, which looks for something to link the research process to the process of social change. Through several stages of the activity cycle, starting with planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting, which are implemented on the subjects assisted by the students through activities planned in a participatory manner by stakeholders, teachers, and students, The results of the implementation of English teaching materials that occur can be concluded to be that students are able to identify problems in terms of the learning process, share experiences they have gained from previous learning activities, solve problems with solutions they consider strategic, slightly recognize that they need empowerment, and understand that every human being has the potential to be able to communicate in English, depending on their willingness to hone skills and improve abilities.

Abstract

This research aims to identify the learning needs of students at SMP Muhamadiyah 3 Depok and the main concern of researcher is analyze the alignment between student learning needs and the learning model applied by teachers. Knowing students' learning needs and using appropriate learning models in the classroom is very important in supporting students to achieve learning objectives. The method used in this research is case study. The data were collected by interview and observation. The structure interview distributed to six students from two different VIII classes in the 2023/2024 academic year students and two teachers. Data analysis techniques in this study used narrative analysis. The findings of this research shows that that students' English language skills are still at A1 or Pre-A1 level and face problems such as regular and irregular verbs, spelling, pronunciation, lack of vocabulary, self-confidence speaking in English, limited learning resources, and lack of motivation in learning English. Furthermore, regarding to their learning needs, they wanted more practical learning in English such as speaking English, prefer teaching materials related to fiction and storytelling, and prefer to learn using a combination of learning media such as pictures and videos rather than just using books and worksheets. While, the implementation of the learning model, in this case, did not align with the students' needs, and the teacher still used the lecture method and teacher centers which made students less motivated and contributed during the learning process. Therefore, based on the research findings, it is recommended that teachers have a good understanding of what students need in their learning so the teacher can implement the appropriate model learning that facilitates their learning and able to achieve the learning objectives.

Abstract

This research aims at investigating how the elementary-school students write in English since they are already taught how to write the spellings of the English words and how to speak the language. The objectives of this research were to identify what syntactic types and subtypes are likely formed by the fourth and sixth graders of elementary school when they produce a situational description disregarding the errors that the learners have made. Such errors are considered to be developmental since they are inevitable in the process of learning and they are, therefore, not the concern of this paper. This study was done to the fourth-grade students and sixth-grade students of elementary school. All the samples were given a situational picture of a living room where a father, mother, son and daughter got together, and were asked to describe the picture according to their own perception. They were given only 45 minutes to do the assessment as it was the allocated time available. All the sentential constructions produced by the students were counted and analyzed in order to find the types and subtypes of sentences the fourth graders and the sixth graders used in their situational descriptive writing. The results of the study show that it the constructions of the sixth graders’ compound sentences are mostly simple in the sense that they conjoin only two simple sentences. Similarly, the constructions of their complex sentences are not very complex too. They consist of only one independent clause and one dependent clause. In their syntactic constructions compound and complex sentences are not found.

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the first language interference toward students’ English speaking as foreign language made by sixth semester students in course design subject, such as phonological interference (pronunciation), grammatical (morphological and lexical), and lexical interference (vocabulary), and the factors that caused interference of the first language. This research is descriptive qualitative. The findings of the research explained that students made three types of interference categorized as phonological interference such as pronounce the word incorrectly (vowel, diphthong, consonan, and allophonic variation), grammatical interference such as in morphological (singular-plural agreement) and syntactical (subject-verb agreement, phrase, comparative adjective, possessive adjective, and parallel structure),  and lexical interference such as in vocabulary (combining between Indonesian and the English language). The data showed that students often make error in phonological aspect. The factors that caused first language interference are lack of knowledge, Indonesian transfer, and lack of vocabularies of foreign language that mastered by students or respondents.

Based on these four characteristics, the teacher was able to arrange the strategies that proper to be practiced in the classroom. The strategies used by the teacher in teaching English speaking skill for Indonesian migrant workers were interactive techniques, grammar translation method, cooperative learning, direct instruction, and diary- writing. Students' activities in class as a result of the teacher's strategies were related to and consistent with the teacher's beliefs about autonomous learners and their characteristics. In other words, the strategies are effective, compelling, and appropriate for use in a class with autonomous learners.
