Abstract

Although there is a growing consensus in research that literacy practices can inform growth in literacy competence, there remains a dearth of studies explaining what and how Indonesian college students interact with texts in off-campus contexts. The objectives of this study are two folds: (1) to identify types of literacy practices carried out by Indonesian undergraduate students; and (2) to study the differences in use of the literacy practices between high rating and low rating students. As many as 200 Indonesian undergraduate students participated in this study. They were asked to complete an online questionnaire of literacy practices and a self-assessment. Principal Component Analysis were employed to analyze data for the first research question. T-test analysis was performed to answer the second research question. We found that there are 8 factors treated as posteriori categories of students’ literacy practices off campus, including professional-related literacy practices, academic-related literacy practices, knowledge-generating literacy practices, self-regulated literacy practices, leisure literacy practices, transactional literacy practices, and course-related literacy practices.. The t-test analysis showed that there are significant differences in use of literacy practices in the four first factors between high rating and low rating students. This is because high rating students typically engaged in reading and writing activities that support success of their college program. These findings indicate that determining effective interventions is pivotal to improve literacy skills of Indonesian college students that tap into their structure of literacy practices out of campus.

Abstract

This is a case study that aims at analyzing students' English proficiency as reflected in students' TOEFL-Like scores at Universitas Sains Alqur'an Central Java in Wonosobo, Indonesia particularly years 2017, 2018, and 2019. The study focuses on students' achievement of English proficiency embedded in TOEFL-Like scores which consist of three sections, namely Listening, Structure and Written Expression, and comprehension of Reading. Considering the huge number of the data (2811 participants), to do the research, the data are conducted statistically using the SPSS application. In detail, the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to find mean (to know students proficiency achievement), minimum, maximum and standard deviation values (to know the variance of students' English proficiency levels). Categorization of the proficiency levels is referred to Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) standard. The study revealed that structure and written expression is the most difficult test faced then consecutively reading and listening. Then, the lowest and the highest scores were 217 and 567 with a standard deviation 31, 4. Furthermore, the mean of the total TOEFL-Like score achieved was 369, 09. Therefore, the students were mostly categorized as basic users (A2). The study suggests that an appropriate module can be considered to help the students to reach better proficiency, especially in a matter of structure and written expression section.

Abstract

The limited academic attention to the ideological dimensions of diasporic poetry—particularly the works of Indonesian diaspora poets—reveals a critical gap in contemporary literary studies. This research aims to explore how poetry functions not only as an artistic expression but also as an ideological medium that articulates hybrid identities, intergenerational trauma, and resistance to dominant narratives. Using a qualitative descriptive method and a Thematic Discourse Analysis approach, this study examines how the anthology Fire Is Not A Country by Cynthia Dewi Oka constructs ideological meaning through poetic language, literary devices, and narrative structure. The analysis focuses on eight selected poems that highlight recurring themes such as identity, family, migration, and trauma, which are intricately intertwined in representing the complexity of diasporic subjectivity and critiquing hegemonic socio-political structures. The findings indicate that Oka’s lyrical strategies effectively infiltrate and challenge dominant ideologies—such as nationalism, patriarchal family expectations, and assimilationist pressures—while offering a counter-discourse that empowers marginalized communities through cultural articulation and collective healing.

Abstract

In the realm of English teaching and learning especially for those of non-native English users, English pronunciation instruction always calls for various techniques which can meet students’ conditions that are naturally affiliated with their psychological and cultural complexities. Thus, the present study aimed at examining the impact of one of English pronunciation instruction techniques, the so-called shadowing technique, on tertiary students’ English pronunciation at IAIN Curup, Bengkulu, Indonesia. An experimental study was conducted by engaging 40 tertiary English students selected randomly. They were split into two groups, wherein 20 students were taught English pronunciation using shadowing technique, and the rest 20 students were taught English pronunciation using a conventional technique. This study revealed that shadowing technique had a positive and significant impact on students’ English pronunciation. Their English pronunciation improvement encompassed various components such as monophthongs, diphthongs, triphthongs, semi-vowels, consonants, consonant cluster sounds, strong and weak forms, linking phonemes, syllable stresses, word stresses, sentence stresses, rhythm, pitch and intonation. Further studies are expected to scrutinize the effect of shadowing technique on English pronunciation by involving more samples, making use of gender difference as a moderator variable, and testing the retention of English pronunciation improvement.
