Abstract

This research aims at investigating and finding out whether storigami is effective in teaching English vocabulary for vocational higher students. Based on the researchers’ observation, most of the students have lack of vocabulary though in mastering English vocabulary is an essential thing that should be known and mastered, especially for vocational higher students who will directly face the working situation. This problem happened because, in their perspective, understanding vocabulary only can be reached through translation and memorization. The subject of this research was taken two classes purposively named control class and experimental class. The samples were taken by determining specific characteristics of students during the learning process. The experiment class applied Storigami as the treatment, while the control class applied the Grammar Translation Method (GTM). Before applying the treatment, a pre-test was conducted for both classes with the same questions. Then, after the treatment, a post-test was conducted for both classes. After collecting and analyzing the data, the researchers found that teaching vocabulary by Storigami is more effective than GTM. The finding showed that T0 :2.639 > T.Tabel: 2.01 means the null hypothesis is rejected and the experiment hypothesis is accepted, or there is any significance between X and Y variables. Furthermore, the mean score of the post-test in the experiment class is higher than the mean score in the control class. It happened because teaching vocabulary by using Storigami is more fascinating for students, and origami can be applied to building students’ English vocabulary and students’ creative thinking

Abstract

This research reports the factors that trigger Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety as perceived by Indonesian EFL learners. The qualitative method was employed in this research. The participants of this research were the 33 Indonesian EFL learners from the class X IPS 3 of SMAN 1 Pandeglang, year academic 2019-2020. The initial process of collecting the data was by spreading a questionnaire known as Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) developed by Horwitz et al. (1986). Then it was followed by an in-depth interview for the ten students with high anxiety levels based on their FLCAS Score. The data was then analysed through three steps developed by Miles and Huberman (1994). The triangulation technique was used to strengthen this research's credibility. This research found that the factors that could trigger students' anxiety are divided into two. The first is teacher-related factors such as assertive teaching and the teacher's calling method. The second is student-related factors such as their negative view of English, being mocked by friends, fear of making mistakes, self-confidence, and inadequate support to practice English speaking. To reduce anxiety, students need to be exposed to the target language as often as possible and get used to it to improve their confidence in speaking English. In addition, the teacher should always be able to find a way to make an entertaining and less tense classroom environment.

Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the notable impact of the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) approach on the students' reading comprehension. The study was carried out at MAN 2, Palembang. The present study employed a quasi-experimental design utilizing quantitative research methodology. The researchers employed the convenience sampling method to gather data. The data were obtained via a reading comprehension test administered to students in the two classes, experimental and control. The study's findings examining the impact of implementing DRTA before and after utilizing a paired sample t-test indicate that the calculated T value of 27.797 exceeds the t-table value of 3.030. Thus, implementing the DRTA approach enhanced the students' reading comprehension in the experimental group. An independent sample t-test was conducted to examine the outcomes of the disparity between individuals who utilized the Directed Reading- Thinking Activity (DRTA) and those who did not. The findings showed that notable disparities in reading comprehension existed among students who received instruction via DRTA and those who did not. The DRTA technique offers advantageous outcomes for students as it fosters active and critical reading practices. Students enrolled in reading courses that engage in prediction and active reading demonstrates a proactive approach to learning, effectively harnessing their cognitive abilities to acquire knowledge on unfamiliar subjects. Furthermore, DRTA mandates that students maintain a record of their understanding of the text while reading.

Abstract

In EFL classrooms, each teacher is expected to be able to act professionally in teaching and assessing the students through the ability to control emotions. However, studies that capture such phenomenon are lacking. This study investigated the narratives of Indonesian EFL teachers’ emotional geographies who conducted online assessments using 'Funtainment Assessment' in 'Grammar' classes. The study employed a narrative inquiry as the design by collecting individual in-depth interview data over four months. Findings unveiled five aspects that influenced changes in the participants' emotional geographies: physical, moral, sociocultural, professional, and political. Participants had a variety of attitudes in response to the emotions that arose when assessing the students' grammar competence online. Interestingly, the participants experienced continuous adaptation to the practice of negotiation to the emotional changes Thus, it did not distract the professional developments they had done through agentive actions. The study's empirical results also suggest that the 'emotional geography dimensions' contributed to future teachers' professional developme

Abstract

There have been many studies on English grammar, but a dearth of studies has been conducted in the cross-sectional fields such as seeking how the field of grammar makes contributions to reading comprehension. Accordingly, the current study sought to find out the impacts of explicit and implicit instructions of English connectors on EFL students’ reading comprehension. 50 third semester students from an English department at a university in Bengkulu were incorporated as the samples. Adopting a quasi-experimental method, those 50 students were split into two classes, the so-called experimental and control classes. Students in the experimental class were taught English connectors explicitly, and those of the control class were taught English connectors implicitly. Before eight times of treatments in the form of the two ways of instructions, students of the two group were given a valid and reliable reading comprehension pre-test, and a similar construct of post-test was given after the eighth treatments ended. The data of the current study were analyzed by deploying paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. The present study revealed that explicit and implicit instructions of English connectors had positive impacts on EFL students’ reading comprehension. However, the explicit instruction of English connectors enhanced EFL students’ reading comprehension more significantly and more effectively. The foregoing was demonstrated by the explicit instruction’s post-test score of 78.5 with SD of 19.787 which was higher than the implicit instruction’s post-test score of 66.75 with SD of 25.05. It is recommended that further studies be conducted to replicate the present study in different contexts for the sake of providing rich data to confirm the current study’s results.

Abstract

Speech errors can happen to everyone in every activity. This is inseparable from the world of education, one of which is microteaching activities. In its implementation in the English Education Study Program at Mathla'ul Anwar University Banten, there were several pauses and slips of the tongue that occurred. This research uses a qualitative approach. This research method is descriptive-qualitative. The data collection methods in this study involved observation, documentation, and checklists. In this study, the researchers conducted an obtrusive study by contacting several subjects and making observations to obtain data according to the formulation of the problem. The visual form of documentation that is the source of data is the microteaching video of sixth semester students of the English Education Study Program at Mathla'ul Anwar University Banten one video for one academic year, start from the 2019/2020 academic year to the 2022/2023 academic year. The results showed that all data, namely Subject A1 to Subject D1, had both types of pauses based on Fromkin's theory, namely silent pauses and filled pauses. While there are only 3 out of 6 types of tongue slips based on Dardjowidjojo theory, there are anticipation, transposition, and perseveration. While there is no slip of the tongue for the types of blend, malapropism, and substitution. In this research, speech errors such as pauses and slips of the tongue were caused by fatigue, a focus on accents, not mastering the material or vocabulary, nervousness, rushed, and the habit of saying the words “eee” and “aaa”. This finding also expects other researchers to further analyze psycholinguistics so as to minimize other speech errors.
