Abstract

The topic of criminality is often viewed as a literary genre closely associated with themes of crime, heroes and anti-heroes, mysterious plots, suspense, plot twists, and violent scenes. This study employs Andrea Hirata's novel "Orang-orang Biasa" as its material object. The data consists of text content in words, phrases, and sentences that align with the predetermined scholarly inquiry. This research uses John G. Cawelti's theoretical framework to delineate data that reveal patterns in narrative structure and character development, thereby classifying the novel as belonging to the crime genre. The findings of this study indicate that the criminal formula presented by Andrea Hirata in "Orang-orang Biasa" is a type of criminal comedy. The results of this study reveal that the formula similarities between Orang-orang Biasaand literary works in the crime genre can be observed in the story motives, setting choices, the presence of additional events accompanying the main narrative, and the characters. The author's presentation of these formulas indicates that the novel belongs to the comedy-crime genre

Abstract

This study scrutinizes the authorial presence in English and Indonesian research articles written by Indonesian authors. The study aims to identify the frequency of first-person pronouns used as a form of authorial presence across research articles. Furthermore, the study also intends to examine the discourse functions of these first-person pronouns in academic writing. A corpus of 168,122 words was analyzed by utilizing corpus linguistics methodology. The findings show that there is a difference in the use of first-person pronouns between the English and Indonesian sub-corpora with the most frequent usage of first-person pronouns found in English research articles. In addition, the study investigated the clusivity and the discourse functions of first-person pronouns within the research articles in both English and Indonesian. The results indicate that Indonesian authors tend to adopt the Western academic style in using first-person pronouns as authorial presence despite the conservative style used in their native language. This reflects the different norms of academic discourse across languages.

Abstract

This study intends to evaluate how the wedding traditions of the Nubian community in Egypt preserve cultural identity and sustain social stability in the face of globalization pressures. These traditions encompass rites such as restrictions against marrying non-Nubians, engagement ceremonies, and henna applications, expressing the collective ideals of the community. This study uses a library research method to examine pertinent material using four important functions—adaptation, goal accomplishment, integration, and pattern maintenance—are assessed in the study using Talcott Parsons' AGIL theory. Thematic data from sociological and ethnographic sources pertaining to Nubian cultural activities were analyzed using a literature review methodology. The findings show that the role of adaptation is represented by the prohibition on marriage with non-Nubians, which tries to preserve the integrity of cultural identity. Customary agreements during engagement ceremonies, which improve interfamily connections, demonstrate goal accomplishment. Collective rituals that strengthen community cohesion, like group prayers, are one way that integration is demonstrated. Pattern maintenance is accomplished by symbolic parts of rituals, such as the application of henna, which ensures that traditional values are passed down through generations. These results support the idea that wedding customs serve as a means of maintaining social harmony and cultural continuity in the globalization era

Abstract

Panji Gumilang and his educational institution, Al-Zaitun, have been the subject of much discussion in the last few months because of their heresy case. In the interview on the Kick Andy Talk Show, many of his utterances were not contextualised with the interviewer's questions. This research aims to analyse the meaning of ‘convoluted’ Impliedature contained in the Violation of Cooperation Principle Maxim Relevance of Panji Gumilang's speech in Kick Andy interview based on Grice Theory and Relevance Theory. The research data is in the form of pieces of AS Panji Gumilang's speech that are irrelevant to Andy's questions so that they imply implicature meaning. The research data were collected through observation technique and documentation technique. While the data source of this research is obtained through the video interview of the Kick andy television program on the Metro TV youtube channel entitled ‘Gonjang-Ganjing Al-Zaitun’ uploaded on 6 June 2023. The method of data analysis in this study applies the pragmatic commensurate analysis method with the basic technique of sorting out the determining elements and the advanced technique of comparative equating. The data presentation method is done descriptively with the help of infromal words. The result of this research shows that Panji's violation of maxim of relevance represents the intention or information that he wants to avoid and hide against the question from the interviewer Andy F Noya. The hidden information of Panji's speech is analysed through the premises of implicature in the process of interpreting the relevance of the conversation based on the knowledge and cognition experience between the two members of the conversation.

Abstract

This study investigates how media outlets frame the Israel-Hamas conflict, focusing on comparative coverage by Al Jazeera and Fox News. Utilizing Pan and Kosicki’s framing analysis model, the research examines four structural dimensions (syntactic, script, thematic, and rhetorical) to reveal how these outlets construct narratives that shape audience perceptions. A qualitative methodology, supported by the constructivist paradigm, was applied to analyze selected news articles from both outlets during significant conflict events. The findings show distinct framing strategies reflecting the outlets’ ideological perspectives. Al Jazeera prioritizes the humanitarian dimension, emphasizing Palestinian suffering, alleged human rights violations by Israel, and voices of Palestinian leaders and activists. Its framing positions Palestinians as victims of injustice, resonating with audiences sympathetic to human rights and social justice. In contrast, Fox News underscores Israeli security concerns, framing Hamas as the primary aggressor while presenting Israel’s actions as defensive and justified. This approach aligns with conservative ideologies, emphasizing terrorism and self-defense narratives. The study highlights how divergent framing influence public opinion, reinforces ideological divides, and impacts policy discourses related to the conflict. By demonstrating the power of media framing in constructing conflict realities, the research contributes to a deeper understanding of media’s role in shaping geopolitical narratives and audience perspectives.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the convergence phenomenon carried out by comedian Megi Irawan when he was a guest star on the PWK podcast hosted by Praz Teguh. Language convergence is an individual's strategy for adapting to the communicative behavior of the interlocutor. This research focused on the Indonesian-Minangkabau language variations used by Megi Irawan when converging on Praz Teguh. The data was obtained from two episodes of the PWK podcast featuring Megi Irawan as a guest star. This research used a descriptive qualitative approach to identify language features, convergence strategies, and social correlations. The findings showed that Megi Irawan converged using variations of the Indonesian-Minangkabau language. In the intrasystemic (internal) aspect of language, three types of Indonesian-Minangkabau language variations were found, namely phonological variations, morphological variations, and semantic variations. The convergence strategies used by Megi Irawan are code-switching, code-mixing, and interference. The findings offer significant insights into broader sociolinguistic themes. First, the research emphasizes how language variations, particularly between Indonesian and Minangkabau, reflect the identities of speakers. This aligns with sociolinguistic studies that explore how language serves as a marker of social identity and cultural belonging. Second, the findings reveal that language serves not only as a means of communication but also as a tool for building social solidarity and navigating social relationships. Third, the research contributes to ethnographic approaches in sociolinguistics by examining how language variations are tied to cultural practices and social interactions.

Abstract

Cyberfeminism is a phenomenon of feminist groups adapting to developments in technology, information, and communication. This phenomenon of existence is quite attractive in itself, as is how this feminist group struggles to defend their rights, especially their activities in the cyber world. The aims of this research are (1) The Rise of Women in Global Civilization, (2) Critique of Patriarchal Culture, (3) Posthuman Thinking. Posthumanism has begun to be implemented. The research method uses a qualitative type of content analysis whose data comes from five Arab feminist blog sources. This data is collected through documentation techniques and analysed using the Milles & Huberman analysis style. The results show that (1) feminist women experience development in achievements and a consistent environment for society, (2) feminist groups still carry out protests against patriarchal culture, (3) Arab feminist women can adapt to the technological, information, and communication environment in voice their arguments. This research introduces a new perspective on the critique of patriarchy, often associated with anarchic acts, demonstrations, or other threatening behaviors. Through the lens of cyberfeminism, the study highlights that criticism of patriarchal culture can be expressed positively and constructively. Data collected from various news sources illustrate actions that are appreciated by society, such as achievements, independence, and innovative breakthroughs. Consequently, this critique is no longer perceived as a threat but rather as a meaningful effort that drives change and gains broad acceptance.
