Abstract

The concept of postmemory, introduced by Hirsch (2012), focuses on the processes through which memories—particularly traumatic memories— of a historical tragedy, “Holocaus”, which is transmitted across generations. Drawing on the elements supporting inter-individual memory transmission, this paper examines the dynamics of human memory within Novel Prize-winning French-Mauritian author J. M. G. Le Clézio's novella entitled “Tempête”. Using a qualitative approach, this study aims to examine the individual forms of memory transmission that are rooted in conditions of isolation, and developed through one trauma site as the memory connector. The presence of semiotics within the story also builds the narration of traumatic memories. It indicates that memory transmission is not necessarily vertical, which is passed from the previous to the next generations. Memory transmission is also not always linear, as there are factors and methods affecting the interpretation of received memory aside from verbally. Thus, the complex relationship between alienation and individual memory transmission processes can directly impact individuals' life projection.

Abstract

Ghost stories as myth have been around for hundreds of years, both in oral or written forms. Literature has provided a space for urban legend. The most popular and legendary ghosts are usually female ghosts. These female ghosts appear not only to represent ghosts but they also carry certain feminine values from the authors. This study aims to investigate female ghosts on Sihir Perempuan, a collection of short stories written by Intan Paramaditha using feminist construction approach. Cixous’ (2008) theory of feminist writing and an approach to shift to the center are used as the study’s conceptual framework. The findings of this study include a paradox in the way Intan Paramaditha reconstructs femininity. In the effort of building femininity, female ghosts are portrayed as legends within patriarchal cultural power. The presence of female ghosts explores female bodies and psychology.

Abstract

This article describes the phenomenon of instability bissu characters in literary works by Faisal Oddang. The research subjects were the novel Tiba Sebelum Berangkat and short story anthology Sawerigading Datang dari Laut. Both of these works were used as a source of primary data, whereas books or journal articles about bissu was used as a secondary data source. This article utilizes the theory initiated by Brian McHale statement about literary work in the postmodernist zone. If the dominant is the ontological trait rather than epistemological, it raises issues and components of different and encroaches on the historical zone. The analysis was shown from fiction to fiction, such as one written by Oddang about bissu character which was presented in inconsistent and encroaching way. Oddang presented bissu in various characterizations and professions. A bissu was shown in one story to have a libido, to work as a spy for the rebellious act, and that the leader bissu only prioritizes ego. In the other story, however, a bissu was shown to work as bridal makeup artist. Still in another story, bissu was shown to work as a translator for the epic I La Galigo. Inconsistency is also seen at the characters of Isuri and Rahing, whom he often utilized in the storyline. The changes of bissu characters in every literary work showed an ontological instability—a universe called intertextuality zone heterotopia. Therefore, Oddang’s works belong to postmodernism, giving insights to readers that there is a new subject being painted.

Abstract

Although the previous studies have given so much attention to exploring the students’ attributions in various settings and academic levels, there is a scarcity of research that presents and compares findings on the attributions of Indonesian university students, specifically in the reading (receptive skill) and writing (productive skill) courses. This study researched students’ attributions in their English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing and reading classrooms at a private university in Indonesia. The research participants were 161 students who responded to an online questionnaire that explored their attributions for the success or failure in achieving the learning objectives of the classes. The study revealed that most of the students in both courses could successfully achieve the learning objectives, and there were no attribution differences in the courses. Their effort and positive teacher’s performances were mostly cited attributions for the success, whereas low ability and lack of effort were the primary attributions for some students’ failure in achieving the learning objectives of the classes. Practical strategies to support teaching and learning in the EFL reading and writing classes and directions for further research were presented.

Abstract

This case study aims to find out how teachers of the International Class Program at an elementary school in Malang incorporated critical thinking (CT) pedagogy in teaching subjects with English as a Medium of Instruction. Eighteen teachers filled in an online questionnaire, and two of them were interviewed. Analysis of one pre-recorded video for English class (lasted for 13 minutes) and one video of Math class delivered through Zoom meeting (lasted for 29 minutes) was done to investigate how teachers triggered students’ thinking in the classroom practice. Also, an analysis of three lesson plans was done to dig further information about teachers’ teaching practices. The findings indicated that the teachers have practical knowledge of CT pedagogy from reading and workshops that were not necessarily focused on CT. Textbooks were mainly used to guide the teachers’ teaching, supported by audio-visual media. Questions primarily were used to trigger students’ higher-order thinking by connecting the texts with the students’ experiences in real life. Despite the implicit policy of CT, the teachers have implemented CT strategies in the International Class Program. Overall, the teachers have played as more knowledgeable others that facilitated the students’ learning to think critically. However, they were not confident whether the teaching material they were developed supported CT pedagogy implementation. Thus, the study findings revealed their need for supervisors to evaluate the content of teaching material and practical guidance to conduct thinking routines for the young learners in the subjects with English as a medium of instruction.

Abstract

Translation is the transfer of a message from a source-language text into an equivalent target-language text. Cultural differences between a source language and a target language always leave marks on a translation process. Language as part of culture influences the minds of its speakers, especially translators. French literary texts (as source texts) and their Indonesian translations (target texts) can provide examples of the differences between the reasoning process of French literary writers and that of Indonesian translators, particularly in the translation of pronouns with this topic being the focus of this present study. By carefully investigating how pronouns are translated in three French novels – Michael Tournier’s (1971) Vendredi ou la Vie Sauvage, Amin Maalout’s (1993) Le Rocher de Tanios, Gustave Flaubert’s (1972) Madame Bovary – this study’s analysis shows that the translation of French pronouns in literary texts into Indonesian results in various forms, namely pronouns, lexical equivalences, repetitions, and substitutions. The translation of the pronoun on, which signifies passive voice, results in equivalence in meaning despite the absence of formal correspondence, and thus conjures the Indonesian passive diatheses di- and ter-

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how teachers teach and students learn in the classroom. One of the challenges in the online teaching is that teachers are required to prepare the instructional materials for their students. This study aims at investigating the EFL teachers’ reasons for choosing the instructional materials in the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. By employing a set of questionnaires, this study collected the data from 219 English teachers from various levels of education online via the google form link. The data collection was done for one month starting from 5 May to 5 June 2020. The data were analyzed through a content analysis by identifying, grouping, and categorizing similar and different responses. The results of analysis showed that the EFL teachers have five categories of reasons in selecting the instructional materials in the time of pandemic: the instructional materials should be easy, relevant, simple, attractive, and absent from crime, pornography, and viruses. These results suggest that the EFL teachers make use of these reasons in selecting and developing the instructional materials for their students during and after the pandemic. For future textbook developers, these considerations can be used a reference to develop textbooks which accommodate students’ voices and teachers’ voices during the online teaching and learning activities.

Abstract

In 2019, there were 63.022 learners of Indonesian as a foreign language in Victorian schools, Australia. They were facilitated by 263 Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) local teachers. Due to a shortage of BIPA local teachers, the Department of Education and Training Victoria had recruited language assistants from Indonesia. This study is aimed to describe the required skillsets of BIPA language assistants to support their duties. The data were collected through interviews, an inventory, observations, and stories of eight Indonesian language assistants with one year of experience. The findings reveal that the language assistants need to develop bicultural, personality and pedagogical competences. These competences should become the reference for developing workshop materials for future BIPA language assistants.
