Abstract

This study investigates the speaking anxiety levels of EFL students enrolled in English medium classes (EMI) in a private university. Factors causing students’ speaking anxiety and potential strategies to reduce the speaking anxiety were also examined. Eighty-nine EMI students from ten undergraduate study programs were the respondents of this study. Data were collected by using Horwitz et al.’s (1986) anxiety survey. Findings showed that EMI students exhibited low-level English-speaking anxiety. The cross-tabulation data demonstrated that students perceived comprehension apprehension as the paramount anxiety factor. To reduce their comprehension apprehension, students prefer their lecturers not to over-react their speaking mistakes and degrade them when they make speaking mistakes. These imply that these findings can be used as consideration for preparatory programs for students and lecturers in EMI classes.

Abstract

The aims of this paper are to discuss the concepts underlying Project-based learning (PjBL) and its syntax and to explore the planning, implementation, and reflection of PjBL in the online teaching of writing a process paragraph on the topic of using Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R) principles to save the environment. Thirty-one students joined the paragraph writing course. The learning process and the students’ products of their projects were collected and documented in the form of videos, Power Point presentation, and electronic writing portfolios. The paper discusses how PjBl promotes collaborative work, problem-solving, critical thinking and technology integration. It also illustrates the steps of the implementation of PjBL which include planning, implementing, and reflecting. The project products were the students’ compositions and the videos showing the process in how to do or to make something that reflect the 3R principles. The majority of the students’ compositions were in ‘very good’ criteria, and the students’ videos were published in YouTube. The implementation of PjBL in the online teaching of process writing on the environmental topic increases the students’ critical thinking and creativity in solving global problems.

Abstract

West Kalimantan is one of the provinces in Indonesia which has three border areas with Malaysia. Community interactions between countries that have been going on for centuries undeniably lead to language contact which results in people choosing local language so that communication can run effectively. The purpose of this study was to determine the variety of language used around the area, language attitudes, and the preservation of Indonesian in the border area of Aruk, Indonesia and Sarawak, Malaysia. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used in which the data were obtained through observation, questionnaires, and interviews with a total of 150 respondents. The results show that the variety of languages used by students, traders and government circles as the target speakers is Indonesian. Furthermore, the language serves as an instructional language in education settings, the language of communication, a unifying tool as well as the language of government administration, while the other local and regional languages are used in certain limited contexts. Regarding the attitudes, the people on the border of Aruk, Indonesia and Malaysia show a very positive attitude towards Indonesian. The defense strategy is carried out by students, traders, and the local government.

Abstract

Globalization and the advancement of technology are giving a new challenge as well as opportunities for English educators around the globe. Indirectly, there are obstacles associated with learning English due to the fact that technology has become an integral aspect of human existence. The teaching of reading skill also faces the same challenge. Nowadays, reading is seen as more important than other skills, considering that reading has become one of the aspects of literacy. With regard to assessment, the availability of an educational application might be advantageous for teachers to assess students' reading skills. The current study investigates the types of application used by teachers in assessing students’ reading skill and the type of reading assessment that occur during the implementation of the application. Through open-ended interview and document analysis method, the research result indicates that the implementation of Google Form as an educational application to assess students reading skills demonstrated a reading assessment based on traditional assessment approaches with a focus on intensive reading. This study has shown the appropriate media for assessing students reading skill along with the reading focuses and assessment design that is suitable for it. In addition, in this study, Google Form dominates the most considerable use of media to assess students reading skills. Therefore, teachers could also save more time in assessing students’ reading by utilizing educational applications.

Abstract

This study aims to trace the early history of the Bimanese to identify the weaving and its 10 motifs defined in the Bima Land Customary Law as part of the Bima ethnic characteristics. The study used a qualitative approach with data triangulation (observations, interviews, and documentation). The research result showed that the activity of spinning yarn was known by the Bimanese before the expedition of Sang Bima to the land of the rising sun (Satonda Island, a volcanic area on Sumbawa Island), which became the ancestors of the Bimanese. They used weaving to make clothes, using similar procedures of Javanese weaving. Initially, the motifs of Bimanese woven were only in the form of stripes and rectangles, but the acculturation with Javanese culture during the heyday of Majapahit influenced the development of motifs in the Bima Kingdom during the 11-13th centuries. Subsequently, there was also acculturation with Bugis and Malay culture after the Bima Kingdom turned into a Sultanate. For instance, in choosing a leader, the Bima people should adopt the principle in the nggusu waru (octagonal) motif or that the Bima people must always bring benefits and noble characteristics like the scent of a flower in the Satako flower motif.

Abstract

The object of this study is the word lotus. In the Comprehensive Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), the lotus entry has only one meaning within the botanical domain. However, the word lotus is also present and used in the context of Buddhism in Indonesia. Based on this fact, it is suggested to add a new meaning to the entry. The problem is to decide whether the new meaning is a polysemy or a homonym, and the criteria used to determine this. The purpose of this research is to provide input to the Language Development and Fostering Agency to add new word entries to the KBBI using a case study of the word 'lotus' entry. Our research results on the word 'lotus' can expand the knowledge of the Indonesian people from the domain of botany to the domain of religion. In order to determine whether the entry is a polysemy or a homonym is carried out through Peirce's semiotic theory developed by Ogden and Richards to examine the relationship between three components that make up the word lotus as a sign. The research method involves analyzing the difference between the basic meaning and the new meaning, whether there is a development of a new meaning or a completely different meaning from the basic meaning. Unlike the previous studies, this research views meaning as a sign component. The lotus entry is a sign consisting of symbol, thought or reference, and reference components.

Abstract

Reading is crucial for learning as it allows students to comprehend texts across various subjects. Effective texts play a significant role in enhancing students' reading skills. To determine suitable reading materials for students, evaluating lexical density and readability is essential. This study examines the lexical density and readability of reading passages in the “English for Nusantara” textbook used by eighth-grade students. A qualitative descriptive method and content analysis were used in this research, by analyzing 20 selected texts from each chapter of the textbook. The study aims to (1) assess the lexical density of the selected passages, (2) evaluate their readability levels, and (3) determine the relevance of these factors to the students' grade level. Lexical density was measured using Ure’s (1971) formula, while Flesch’s reading ease formula assessed readability. The findings revealed that (1) none of the texts had low lexical density; 12 texts had moderate lexical density, and 8 had high lexical density; (2) the readability test indicated five different reading levels among the 20 texts, with only 4 texts suitable for the students' grade level; and (3) the textbook may be insufficiently challenging in terms of readability, though the moderate to high lexical density suggests students are exposed to rich vocabulary.

Abstract

Autonomy in self-regulated learning using various online modes has currently become the norm in English language teaching and learning. This research aims to address student awareness and attitude towards autonomous language learning and their affordances and challenges as a part of such learning. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on English language students of a renowned private university in Malang, Indonesia. The findings suggest that student awareness on the importance of autonomy in language learning was very high. In general, their attitude towards autonomous learning was positive. They also reported that autonomous learning, especially those conducted in informal online settings were enjoyable and educative. However, some practical challenges were identified. The foci of the survey in the study were on the student affordances and challenges during autonomous language learning. Our data showed that student affordances include a number of technical aspects, learning resources, and learning management, while the challenges consist of technical and learning management aspects. We then proposed relevant activities to support students’ autonomous learning. Abstract

The body is an integral part of being human. It is physical as well as spiritual, not only natural but also supernatural. In this regards, proper treatment of the body may indicate the level of one’s religiosity. The purpose of this study was to find the religiosity of the human body in poems written by Indonesian poets. Adopting Küçükcan’s (2005) religiosity dimension framework, we examine the body's religiosity from the following dimensions: belief, practice, and spirituality. Our data were a collection of language units in lines and stanzas taken from poems written by Mashuri and Alek Subairi. They were analyzed using hermeneutic approach. The results show that within the dimension of belief reflected in the poems, the body is considered mortal and religious. Within the practical dimension, the body is used to fulfill economic necessity. It is also used as a means to meet God. Within the dimension of spirituality, the body channels God’s presence in various forms: love, caringness, and warmth. We conclude that these three religiosity dimensions support and complement each other.

Abstract

Being ethnic minority students in a culturally diverse school is a challenge. This study aims to explore the experiences of students from various ethnic groups as ethnic minority students in a culturally diverse school. These experiences cover both the barriers and the success of those students in adjusting to the culturally diverse school. Five students coming from diverse ethnic groups were recruited as the participants. This study adopted a qualitative design by using a semi-structured interview as the research instrument. The interview data were transcribed and then coded into several themes based on the focus of the research. The results showed that the ethnic minority students might find difficulties adjusting to the school at first. However, they gradually adjusted to the school because of these following factors: teachers’ support, students’ cohesiveness, students’ cooperation, and teachers’ equity. The results of this study imply that the ethnic minority students once experienced some challenges in adjusting to the school environment before they were facilitated with more positive schooling experiences related to student-student relationships and student-teacher relationships.
