Abstract

This paper critically examines how contemporary Singaporean writers use language in verse, that is poetry, to make vivid representations of Singapore as a nation and discursively construct the social notion of the country's national identity. Utilizing Wodak's (2001) Discourse-Historical framework, this paper reveals how the two authors use some common discursive strategies, mainly representational and predicational, in making explicit representations of Singapore and creating a strong sense of national identity. In their poetry, authors frequently utilize referential linguistic devices such as first personal pronouns to attach specific human traits that help personify Singapore and express an in-group identity that functions as a unifying mechanism that connects Singapore, including its people, together. Lexical repetitions and rhetorical figures are also used to convey more emphasis and reveal the authors' intended meanings or messages. The authors employ various descriptive words to create better and more accurate imageries of Singapore as a varied community and as a nation. Furthermore, the authors' discursive techniques perform both the "constructing" and "preserving" macro-functions by discursively constructing Singapore's national identity as well as making an urgent call to all Singaporeans to safeguard their collective identity.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the lexical semantic fields of reading textbooks in Universitas Negeri Malang, specifically in categories being, cosmic, energetic, substantial, terrestrial, objective, living, animate, and human. It used a descriptive qualitative method with a semantic analysis approach. The semantic approach was selected since we intended to comprehend the semantic phenomenon from the lexical-semantic field aspect of a specific textbook course. In detail, we started the research by describing the lexical-semantic field in the textbook and classified the words and phrases. Further, we identified the rational understanding of those words and phrases as a complete understanding of a word requires comprehending the connection with the surrounding words, known as the semantic field. The interconnection of words’ meanings is caused by their specific meaning in particular social situation and condition. Our analysis results suggested that the lexical-semantic field in the reading course textbook (Al-Arabiyah Baina Yadaika chapter 1) from Universitas Negeri Malang is dominated by the being and human semantic fields. Accordingly, the lecturers are suggested to complete the reading textbook with more contextual materials with different semantic fields following students’ interests.

Abstract

The study investigates the roles of images and intermodal relationships of both language and images in two English textbooks used in Vietnamese lower secondary schools, namely Tieng Anh and Solutions textbooks to gain insights on the ways to optimise the use of both language and images as resources in teaching and learning activities. Kress and Van Leeuwen’s (1996, 2006) framework on the grammar of visual design is used to analyse the images, looking at the types of image representations and the compositional meanings. The language-image relationships in the books, on the other hand, are analysed using the framework of Intermodal Identification (Unsworth & Cleirigh, 2014). Intermodal identification is built on the notion that language complements the meaning of the image and vice versa. Language identifies image by glossing the image participants which are not encoded in the language elements. Image identifies language in three aspects: intensive to visualise quality such as shape, colour, or texture, possessive to visualise additional participants which are not explicitly addressed in the language and circumstantial to visualise the elements of locations in the language. While image in textbooks has always been considered essential as a source of teaching and learning materials as well as helping students to learn, this study suggests that the role of image is augmented when juxtaposed with the accompanying language. The study implies the need for further investigation, for example in the classroom action research on how language and image resources can be utilised in teaching and learning activities. Also, the result of the study may be replicated to analyse language-image relationship in different samples of textbooks.

Abstract

People doing work from home are mostly depending on what the internet has to offer for communication. Because people want to make good use of the Internet for communication, such information is available in English as a global language. One of the advantages of having ready information in English is that local cultural products can now have better chances to compete globally with products from other cultures. One of those products is Indonesia’s Batik Semarangan, which is produced in Semarang, the capital city of Central Java. Through studying the motifs found in Batik Semarangan, an intercultural communication awareness of rich hybrid culture can be achieved. To ensure awareness, a group of English Department’s literature students was trained to do library and field research on Batik Semarangan. By applying Roland Barthes’ semiotics, students were encouraged to explore the hidden reasons for the unique choice of Batik Semarangan motifs. By doing this activity, not only were the students equipped to be more critical in researching local products but the lecturer has also helped preserve and elevate Batik as a traditional heritage that has global potentiality.

Abstract

In preparing the students to have the ability to interpret texts using critical lenses, to challenge the power relations within the messages and communicate actively in multimodal context, there is a need and urgency of the hybrid learning process to take place. As part of multi-years’ research and development which aims to develop digital module and learning management systems (LMS) for the students, this preliminary needs-based research focuses on the students’ and lecturers’ perceptions regarding the need for developing LMS in the Critical Literacy course in Bachelor of English Language Education, Universitas Negeri Jakarta. The research participants were thirty-two students, and a lecturer who responded to questionnaires, interviews to lecturer, and focus group discussions. The research data was the students’ needs based on Hutchinson and Water’s theory which could be divided into target needs (necessities, lacks and wants) and learning needs. The study was conducted with the qualitative approach with the Successive Approximation Model (SAM) which focuses on Preparation Phase research design. Throughout the information gathering and the Savvy Start, the phase rotated through needs analysis and library study. The results demonstrate that there is a gap between the expected outcomes of the Critical Literacy course and students' ability to understand various texts, especially in understanding the interpretation of data in the form of graphs, tables, and numbers. Also, students need exposure to various texts such as news items, critical analysis of texts, and current issues in education. While the difficulty experienced by lecturers when teaching is that students' language skills (especially reading) are very varied. Also, the lecturer and students want Critical Literacy material that makes students think critically about topics related to critical literacy theory, strategy, and its practice. The preferred activities in this course include debates, discussions, criticizing social campaigns, advertisements and short films, and topics on digital literacy. By this, developing a ready-to-use digital English learning materials that correspond to the students’ and lecturer’s is exigent.

Abstract

The use of natural materials is a creative and innovative process to increase the potential of the surrounding environment, such as the use of natural dyes. As rambutan skin has been rarely used and reported as a natural dye, this study explores its usage on leather. In this study, we applied rambutan skin as a natural dye to tanned leather from goat crust skin using the creative eco-printing method. We used an experimental method with a pre-experiment one-shot case study design. Each sample was dyed at different times using distinct solutions during the mordant process. The solution was made from rambutan skin and different solvents, such as alum (AI2(SO4)3), calcium oxide (Ca(OH)2), and ferrous sulfate (FeSO4). The results show that crust-tanned leather from goat skin can be successfully colored with natural dye from rambutan skin. The more amount of dyes used results in a darker color. In addition, the type of mordant used produces a different color. In the eco-printing process, the background color is influenced by the type of mordant used on the blanket, which serves as a cover for the eco-print process. Meanwhile, the leaves stop the mordant from penetrating the leather and become the source of the motive.

Abstract

The idea of speaking skills is interconnected with the environment and social context of students poses new challenges by students from ethnic minorities in English language learning. These factors encompass the hindrances and the success of ethnic minority students in adjusting themselves in speaking classes. From 95 first-year students in English Language Teaching program, 18 of them have different minor ethnicities. This study adopted a qualitative study by using semi-structured interviews as an instrument of research. The data then transcribed, coded, and analyzed into different themes that are in line with the research objectives. The results of this study show that the difficulties experienced by students from ethnic minorities in adjusting themselves in speaking classes are the lack of confidence, shyness, and anxiety, speaking opportunities and vocabulary masteries, feeling isolated, and additive bilingualism from peers. However, these hindrances can be solved by various factors: teachers’ decision in designing discussed topics and speaking activities in classroom setting.

Abstract

Learning devices need to be designed according to the characteristics of the material and be innovative. The results of the field study show that learning the subject of Indonesian fairy tale messages in elementary schools has not been fully implemented using such media, teaching materials, and assessment tools. Referring to this, this study aims to develop a literary learning device assisted by Augmented Reality (AR) media. This development research refers to the design-based research (DBR) development model from Amiel and Reeves (2008). The subjects of this development research trial were twenty students and a third-grade elementary school teacher. Data collection techniques used are semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis is done by reducing, and presenting, until finding the interpretation of the data. The results of the study in the form of learning device products consisting of learning media, teaching materials, and assessment instruments showed that the Augmented Reality media-assisted literary learning device was validated as very feasible (85percent) with a high level of practicality category (93percent). The implication is that this product can be used in learning literature in elementary schools as an innovative alternative learning tool.

Abstract

This study aims to find sexist language in the speech of female preachers through representation, interpretation, and forms of discrimination in the text. This study used a qualitative phenomenological research method and used critical discourse analysis by Faircloughn as supporting the data. The data shows that females speak more sexist if they talk to the same gender than a different gender. From this phenomenon, the impact on the use of vocabularies that license gender identity by using the terms marked, unmarked, and semantic derogation. There are other relationships with grammar using declarative, imperative, and interrogative sentence types in intentionality modalities; epistemic; deontic; dynamic. This relationship also discussed the uses of mentioning text in a text structures by convection of relationships, structuring, and ordering a text.
