Abstract

This study investigated the commenters’ reading positions in an online news article’s comment column. The first theory that coined the reading position is Stuart Hall. Based on Hall's theory, there are three reading positions for the readers in interpreting a text. First is the dominant or hegemonic reading position that means the readers who fully share the text, receive, and then reproduce it. Second is the negotiated reading position; it means the readers who do not fully share the text yet generally receive it. In this position, they sometimes refuse and modify the text by reflecting their positions, experiences, interests, or even contradictions. The third is the oppositional or counter-hegemonic reading position; it means the readers whose social situation places them in direct opposition relationships with the text. They understand the text but do not share it and reject it. In this study, the researcher used the speech act theory to describe and find out the commenters’ reading positions in the selected data. There are 42 comments have written on the comment column of an online news article entitled ‘Singles in Indonesia are in trouble and under pressure: study’ that was shared on Facebook. The researcher used the qualitative descriptive method for analyzing the data. The results are 14 commenters were identified in the hegemonic reading position, 17 commenters in the negotiated reading position, and 11 commenters in the oppositional reading position.

It was collected by using the technique of observation and deep interview from Yapen people who live in Serui city and its surroundings. The holistic approach was adopted by combining cultural study (form and content model) and literary study (semiotic approach and feminist literary criticism). The researcher found that Ayao Woniwon was created (anonymous) to protect males' roles that were symbolized by Kavi (loincloth), Yawainye (torch), Ayume (sail), Umbaio (wooden fork), and Epane (Nibong floor) and position of females on private-domestic work that was symbolized by Keepo Anane (papeda chopstick), Tewami (fireplace), and Ingkuja (Noken). The impressive penetration of gender habitus into Ayao Woniwon through these symbols causes gender disposition systems not to be eroded by time but continues to be inherited in the Yapen community.

Abstract

The face of Indonesian art contains multicultural, intercultural, and diverse values in the dialectics of regional arts and global culture. The rise of local culture is often caused by global cultural friction. The attraction and tension between global culture and local culture results in the 'glocalization' of culture. This article aims to explore the values of locality and global culture as a creative foundation for art in the Balinese diaspora art community, Sanggar Dewata Indonesia (SDI) which is culturally and philosophically insightful. The Balinese diaspora gradually has a new cultural identity as a result of the acculturation of Balinese culture with the local culture. Likewise, in the aspect of the language of art, Balinese diaspora artists in Yogyakarta are accommodative, experiencing visual transformation, syncretic, and contain hybridization of cultural values. This study utilizes qualitative methods with a formal study of cultural philosophy through an interpretive approach. The cultural interpretive approach has resulted that the culture and art process of the SDI art community are symbolically the result of the legacy of the collective conception system both in communicating, perpetuating and developing knowledge to attitudes towards artistic life. The mission and vision of SDI includes the spirit of nationalism, Pancasila nationalism, multiculturalism, in order to achieve the international art world, which is more heterogeneous and competitive. Thus the local-global spirit is accompanied by a process of reinterpretation and re-contextualization of a time that presents a thinking discourse, creative vision through creative dialectics that is filled with local-global acculturation shock power towards world-class global art competition.

Abstract

Teen lit serves a central position in the conception of masculinity in teenagers due to its closeness to them as readers. For teenagers, physical masculinity is relatively highlighted compared to masculinity in other dimensions. Physical masculinity is expressed through classic names, which is related to strength, and is signified by ‘provincial’ names. Physical masculinity is also conveyed through the expressions of the eyes and figures. Besides, a specific cultural icon typically related to handsomeness is also used to construct physical masculinity in teen lit.
