Abstract

study explores grammatical errors found in descriptive essays written by five English major students at a university in Medan using a qualitative approach. The students produced texts freely, and their writing was analyzed to identify recurring error patterns and the factors that triggered them. Results show that the most common errors relate to verb agreement, tense use, sentence structure, and linking words, mostly influenced by Indonesian language interference and limited exposure to English writing. These mistakes also reflect low self-monitoring habits during the writing process. Rather than indicating failure, errors demonstrate developmental progress and the learners’ attempt to construct meaning in a second language. The study suggests contextual grammar teaching supported by writing practice, authentic input, and constructive feedback. With consistent guidance, students are expected to gradually build grammatical accuracy in academic writing.

This research was conducted at the second grade of SMAN 1 IV Koto Agam Regency by the reason of there were still a lot of students who thought that listening is a difficult skill to learn and had low score in listening. This problem occurred because the students were still lack of exposure to the English to provide them with a comprehensible input in acquire the language especially listening skill. Moreover, theories said that watching English movies as a habit could be beneficial and could provide an input to develop students’ listening skill. However, there were not all of the students who had watching movie habit got good score in listening. Nevertheless, there were some of the students who had watching movie habit and got good score in listening. The method used in this research was quantitative method with the correlational design. The population of the research was all of the students from eleventh grade at SMAN 1 IV Koto and the sample was consisted of 33 students. The sample was taken by using random sampling technique. The instruments that were used in this research was questionnaire for measuring the students’ habit in watching English movie and listening comprehension test for measuring students’ listening skill. The researcher used Product Moment Correlation to see if there was any correlation between the two variables. The result showed that the value of correlation coefficient (rxy) was 0.223 which means that there was a positive low correlation between the variable x and variable y. Furthermore, the hypothesis testing showed that the index value rxy was lower than the index value of rt (0.223<0.355) which means that the H0 (null hypothesis) was accepted and Ha was rejected. Thus, there was unsignificant correlation between the variable x and variable y. However, this result may have been affected by internal threats. The students used of subtitle while watching movie was quite high which may prevent them to optimally receive the inputs and acquire the language especially listening skill.

Abstract

Grammatical accuracy remains a persistent challenge for learners in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, particularly in academic writing contexts. Despite having adequate vocabulary and basic grammatical knowledge, many university students continue to produce recurring grammatical errors that weaken clarity and effectiveness in written communication. Traditional teacher-centered correction, although valuable, often fails to lead to sustained improvement, as students may not fully internalize the feedback provided. This study explores peer correction as an alternative and collaborative approach to minimizing grammatical errors in EFL academic descriptive writing. Peer correction encourages learners to actively engage with texts, negotiate meaning, and reflect critically on grammatical forms through interaction with classmates. By involving students in cycles of reviewing and revising each other’s work, this research aims to examine how peer correction influences learners’ grammatical awareness, accuracy, and confidence. Situated in a university EFL context, the study focuses on learners who are beyond beginner level but still experience persistent grammatical difficulties. The findings are expected to contribute to a deeper understanding of peer interaction as a pedagogical strategy that supports grammatical development, learner autonomy, and collaborative learning in academic writing classrooms.

The theory used is ecocritical theory and uses a qualitative method with a discourse approach and Greg Garrad’s Ecocritical Studies. The main data for this research is a short story by Ghina Fadhilah entitled “Sungai Kami”. The ecological data contained in the short story is the result of a literary study which is then connected to other written texts. Abstract

Based on the formulation of the research problem, the main focus of this study is to analyze the psychological problems experienced by the main character in the novel Ayahku Bukan Pembohong by Tere Liye. The purpose of this study is to describe in depth the form of psychological problems that arise in the main character, especially in facing complex inner conflicts. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative with a foundation of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory that emphasizes three main aspects, namely the id, ego, and superego, as an analytical tool. The object of the research is the novel Ayahku Bukan Pembohong which displays the psychological dynamics of the main character through a storyline full of emotional tension. The character Dam is depicted experiencing an inner struggle due to feelings of hatred, regret, and rejection of the story told by his father, thus giving rise to an internal conflict that reflects the imbalance between subconscious drives and the reality he faces. The application of Freud's theory in this study was chosen because it is able to reveal how the inner anxiety and subconscious of the main character influence his behavior and attitudes in the story. This analysis reveals that the main character not only faces external conflict but is also threatened by ongoing internal psychological conflict, resulting in psychological behavior that demonstrates conflict between the impulsive id, the ego that tries to mediate, and the superego that demands adherence to values and norms. This gives rise to psychological behavior.

Abstract

TikTok, as a social media platform, is increasingly gaining attention in English language teaching (ELT) due to its potential to enhance speaking and listening skills through interactive learning experiences. However, its effectiveness in formal education is still debated due to challenges pedagogical. This study aims to synthesize evidence related to the role of TikTok in English Language Teaching (ELT), specifically its impact on students' speaking, listening, and engagement learning. This study employs a systematic review method based on the PRISMA guidelines, with data search using the keywords “Digital Learning; English Language Teaching (ELT); Learner Engagement; Social Media; TikTok” in five academic databases, namely Scopus (n = 30), Mendeley (n = 25), Publish or Perish (n = 40), Google Scholar (n = 50), as well as additional sources from ResearchGate (n = 4), Academia.edu (n = 1), and institutional repositories (n = 3). Of the 153 studies found, 48 were thoroughly reviewed, and 20 final studies were analyzed. The results show that TikTok can improve students’ pronunciation exercises, listening comprehension, and learning motivation. However, challenges such as content validity, curriculum integration, and potential distractions remain concerns. In conclusion, TikTok has the potential to serve as an additional learning tool in ELT, increasing engagement and language acquisition; however, a structured pedagogical strategy is necessary to maximize its benefits and address existing challenges. More research is needed to identify best practices in integrating TikTok into formal education.
