Abstract

The overhead serve is an important technique in volleyball that initiates attacks and creates scoring opportunities. The effectiveness of this technique is influenced by several physical factors, particularly upper-limb muscle strength. Resistance band training was selected for this study because it provides elastic resistance, allowing more flexible, safe, and sport-specific movement patterns than many conventional strength-training methods, making it suitable for youth athletes. This study aimed to examine the effect of overhead serve training using resistance-band media on arm muscle strength in volleyball players at Citra Club. This research employed a quantitative, pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest. The sample consisted of 16 volleyball players aged 10–18 years, selected purposively. Arm muscle strength was measured using a handgrip dynamometer as an indicator of general upper-limb muscular strength during physical fitness assessment. The training program consisted of 10 sessions over five weeks. The results showed that the average arm muscle strength increased from the pretest to the posttest. The normality test using the Normal Probability–Probability Plot (P–P Plot) indicated that the residuals were normally distributed, as the points followed a diagonal pattern. In addition, the Normalized Gain (N-Gain) analysis yielded an average value of 0.0604, indicating that the training program produced a moderate improvement in players' arm muscle strength. These findings indicate that overhead serve training using resistance band media can improve arm muscle strength in youth volleyball athletes and can serve as an alternative training method in volleyball coaching programs.

Abstract

Performance in competitive futsal relies heavily on mastery of technical skills, particularly passing and dribbling. However, conventional training techniques often fail to replicate the high-pressure dynamics of real matches, particularly in elementary-level development programs with limited training opportunities. Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness of a Small-Sided Games (SSG) training intervention on the passing and dribbling abilities of adolescent futsal players. This study used a quasi-experimental design with 15 extracurricular students at MAN 2 Palu who were assigned to a pre-test and a post-test. The intervention consisted of eight weeks of SSG training in 3v3 and 4v4 formats, with a focus on controlling space constraints and quick transitions. Technical skills were measured using standardized tools for passing and dribbling in futsal. SPSS 26 was used to analyze the data using a paired t-test, also known as a paired samples t-test. Results showed a highly significant improvement in technical performance (t = 16.733, p < 0.001). The mean technical score increased by 61.6%, rising from 4.33 ± 0.82 to 7.00 ± 0.91. Strong intervention reliability across the sample was confirmed by a 95% confidence interval (CI: 2.325–16.733). The use of Small-Sided Games (SSG) led to a significant increase in ball contact frequency and in decision-making under time-space pressure. According to this study, Small-Sided Games (SSG) are the most time-efficient and effective pedagogical tool for improving technical skills in school-based sports programs. These results enable coaches to shift from linear, repetitive drills to a non-linear, game-based training approach.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the increasing use of true wireless stereo (TWS) devices among university students while jogging, which potentially increases ear health and safety risks. Previous studies have addressed the impact of audio devices on physical performance. Physical education students differ from the general student population due to their higher intensity of physical activity, including regular jogging as part of their academic routine and lifestyle. This leads them to use TWS devices more frequently and for longer durations, especially during dynamic physical activities. This study used a qualitative case study approach with 15 participants, including 13 university students and 2 ENT specialists, for source triangulation. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation, with data analysis using NVivo 12 software and participant data collection using a purposive sampling technique. The results showed that most university students used TWS devices for more than 60 minutes and at volume levels above 60%, both during jogging and other activities. While this use has positive effects, such as increased motivation, reduced fatigue, and greater comfort during exercise, negative effects have also been reported, including tinnitus (ringing in the ears), pain, dizziness, and decreased awareness of the surrounding environment, which can increase the risk of accidents. Source triangulation with an ENT doctor increases the risk of hearing loss from prolonged exposure to excessive noise. Therefore, education and awareness are needed to implement safe TWS use and maintain ear health.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the Mpa’a Geo game model in relation to the preservation of Bima culture at SMPN 3 Bima City. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive design, utilizing both primary and secondary data sources. Data were analyzed through three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, conducted before and during fieldwork. The participants in this study were students from class 3A at SMPN 3 Bima City. The research instruments included observation sheets, interview guides, and documentation. The findings revealed that although numerous traditional games exist in the Bima region, their practice has gradually diminished over time. Traditional games offer various benefits, including: (1) fostering creativity, (2) serving as a therapeutic tool for children, (3) enhancing intellectual intelligence, (4) improving interpersonal and emotional intelligence, (5) developing logical reasoning, (6) strengthening kinesthetic abilities, (7) nurturing naturalistic intelligence, (8) enhancing intrapersonal intelligence, (9) improving musical intelligence, and (10) fostering spiritual growth. In contrast, modern games tend to reduce peer interaction and promote individualistic behavior among children. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Mpa’a Geo traditional game model contributes significantly to the preservation of Bima culture among students at SMPN 3 Bima City in physical education learning.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the role of physical education in character building of students at SMP Negeri 19 Palu, particularly in the aspects of self-control and cooperation. This study was motivated by the gap between the ideal implementation of character education in the curriculum and learning practices in the field, which still tend to be oriented towards the development of motor aspects and have not fully integrated character values optimally. The method used a quantitative approach and a cross-sectional design. Data collection was carried out after the physical education learning process had been running for one semester, thus providing an actual picture of the condition of student character. The sample consisted of students of SMP Negeri 19 Palu selected using a proportional stratified random sampling technique. The research instrument used a questionnaire to measure character indicators, particularly self-control and cooperation. The results showed that the level of student character was in the category of very poor at 10%, poor at 13%, sufficient at 43%, good at 26%, and very good at 8%. Although the "sufficient" category was more dominant, this indicates that physical education has contributed to the formation of student character, particularly in the development of self-control and cooperation skills. However, these results also show that the internalization of character values still needs to be strengthened through more integrative, participatory, and experience-based physical education learning strategies so that students' character formation can develop more optimally.

Abstract

Excessive gadget use among elementary school students is a growing educational and health concern because it can disrupt the balance between academic learning, physical activity, and social-emotional development. This study analyzed the academic ability and physical activity of excessive gadget users in several elementary schools in Rancakalong District using a convergent parallel mixed-methods design guided by the PRECEDE-PROCEED framework. Quantitative data were obtained from an academic ability test, a Likert-scale screening instrument, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), whereas qualitative data were collected through observations and interviews with students, parents, and teachers. The quantitative sample consisted of 52 students in grades IV, V, and VI, and six students were purposively selected for in-depth IPAQ-SF and qualitative analysis. The mean academic score was 8.33 out of 20 and was significantly below the minimum competency standard of 12 (t(51) = -11.36; p < 0.001); only four students (7.69%) reached proficiency. IPAQ-SF results showed 5 participants (83.3%) in the moderate physical activity category and 1 participant (16.7%) in the low category, but sitting time remained high at 3-7 hours per day. Qualitative findings explained this active-sedentary paradox through concentration problems, physical discomfort, instant gratification, inconsistent parental mediation, and school-level regulation. The study suggests that excessive gadget use is associated with low academic achievement and unbalanced daily patterns, requiring integrated digital literacy, active learning, parental mediation, and school-based physical activity interventions.

Abstract

This study used a randomized controlled trial with thirty (30) volleyball athletes. They were given a fixed amount of carbohydrates (50-70g) before physical activity, in accordance with existing guidelines for pre-exercise nutritional supplementation. Various measures were evaluated. Metabolic indicators included blood glucose concentration, insulin concentration, and lactate concentration. Physical fitness was also assessed through endurance tests. Significant differences were found between the three groups in blood glucose, insulin, lactate, and physical performance (p ≤ 0.05). Zahidi dates produced the most stable metabolic response, indicated by the lowest mean blood glucose (90 ± 5 mg/dL) and insulin levels (9.2 ± 1.1 μIU/mL) compared to Qaranfali and Medjool. Conversely, Qaranfali showed the highest physical performance results (1300 m) and the highest rate of improvement (16.0%), followed by Medjool (1280 m; 15.3%) and Zahidi (1250 m; 13.6%). These results suggest that dates with a low glycemic index support metabolic stability, while those with a moderate glycemic index may be more beneficial for sports performance. Furthermore, the choice of date type should be tailored to the nature and timing of physical activity, as it is recommended to use dates with a low glycemic index before prolonged exercise to improve metabolic stability, while dates with a high glycemic index can be used for short-term activities or during periods of rapid recovery. The study concludes that dates are an effective and reliable natural food source for sports nutrition strategies. This opens the door to further applied research in various sports settings, especially in date-producing countries.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the low learning motivation of elementary school students in Physical Education classes, as evidenced by low student participation, lack of confidence when engaging in sports activities, and students' tendency to avoid physical activities considered tiring. This condition is believed to be related to limited parental social support for their children's learning and physical activity. This study aims to analyze the forms of parental social support and their influence on student learning motivation in Physical Education classes. This study used a qualitative method with a case study approach. Participants were selected through purposive sampling, consisting of 15 students, 15 parents, and 1 Physical Education teacher. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation, then validated using source triangulation, methodological triangulation, and member checking. The results showed that parental social support includes emotional, instrumental, informational, and appreciative support. Emotional and instrumental support are the most dominant forms of support in increasing student confidence, enthusiasm, and engagement in Physical Education learning. The main findings of this study indicate limitations in informational support due to some parents' lack of understanding of physical education materials, leading children to often ask friends for answers or seek information on their own. This situation is influenced by limited physical literacy, educational background, and family economic conditions in the Sumedang community. This study concludes that parental social support plays a significant role in increasing students' motivation to learn in physical education classes.

Abstract

Backhand shot accuracy is an essential component of performance in squash, particularly in maintaining rally consistency and creating scoring opportunities during matches. However, conventional training methods are often less effective in helping athletes maintain shot precision under high-intensity playing conditions. Target practice training was implemented as a focused exercise method to improve technical precision and movement consistency during backhand execution. This study aimed to examine improvements in backhand shot accuracy through target practice training in junior squash athletes using the Hunt Squash Accuracy Test (HSAT). A quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest experimental design was employed. The sample consisted of 15 regional-level athletes. The intervention program was conducted over eight weeks with a frequency of two training sessions per week, each lasting 120 minutes and including 30 minutes of high-intensity target-based training. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired-sample t-tests, and N-Gain analysis. The results showed a significant increase in the mean accuracy score from 30.53 (SD = 2.13) to 48.53 (SD = 1.84), with p < 0.05. The N-Gain value of 0.72 indicated a high level of improvement, while the effect size analysis demonstrated a strong intervention effect. These findings suggest that target practice training is effective in improving backhand shot accuracy and may be considered as an alternative technical training method for junior squash athletes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the potential for fisheries tourism development in the Jatigede Reservoir, Sumedang Regency, using a qualitative descriptive research method with an analytical framework of Marketability, Sustainability, Participation, and Disaster Mitigation (MSP-DM). Jatigede has a unique submerged forest ecosystem, unlike other dams, which serves as a habitat for large predatory fish such as Hampala and Channa, creating specific technical challenges for the national sportfishing community. Data collection was conducted through participant observation, document review, and in-depth interviews with managers, fishing communities, local communities, and the Indonesian Fishermen's Association (APRI). The findings reveal a paradox between economic exploitation and conservation; where massive digital promotion has made Jatigede a "new giant" of national fisheries but also puts pressure on the sustainability dimension. Efforts to limit the number of rafts often conflict with the drive for economic profitability of local communities. The study concludes that Jatigede's enormous potential can only be optimized if there is synchronization between regulations on the number of fishing gear and safety standards based on integrated risk management. Community participation has successfully transformed the village's economic structure through the service sector, but disaster mitigation remains reactive rather than preventative. Furthermore, Jatigede's vast potential can only be maximized if regulations on fishing gear quantities and safety standards are synchronized based on integrated risk management.
