Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine the creative strategies employed by Purwa Caraka Music Studio (PCMS) in developing its music education institution and to analyze the music education network that has been established and expanded across Indonesia. Method: This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach, conducted through document analysis, observation, and interviews with PCMS instructors, students, and alumni. The data were analyzed using data reduction, data display, and inductive conclusion drawing techniques. Results and Discussion:The findings indicate that PCMS’s creative strategies are reflected in the implementation of fun learning, a flexible curriculum, diversification of musical genres, regular concert programs, and the use of digital media for online learning and promotion. In addition, PCMS has successfully developed a network of more than 78 branches across Indonesia, often referred to as the “octopus phenomenon,” which has expanded public access to non-formal music education. This network functions not only structurally but also as a social and cultural ecosystem, supported by alumni contributions in the entertainment, education, and creative industries. Conclusion: Thus, PCMS plays a significant role in supporting the development of musical creativity within Indonesian society. The institution serves not only as a place for music learning but also as a center for character development, creativity cultivation, and a cultural agent that strengthens the national music ecosystem.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the innovation process in the development of the Kolotik musical instrument as a strategy for revitalizing traditional arts while strengthening Ciamis’s local art products. Method: A descriptive qualitative method with an arts ethnography approach was employed and conducted in Cimaragas District, Ciamis Regency, through participatory observation of the production and use of Kolotik, in-depth interviews with craftsmen, artists, community leaders, and arts educators, as well as visual documentation and field notes; data were analyzed through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing using source and technique triangulation. Results and Discussion: The findings indicate that Kolotik innovation occurs across four main domains: (1) the transformation of form and function through the development of size, color, and ornamentation, along with the expansion of functions from a traditional rhythmic instrument into an applied art product with aesthetic and economic value; (2) the development of numerical notation and simple scores as documentation media to transform oral transmission into more systematic learning, including applications to regional songs such as Bubuy Bulan and Manuk Dadali; (3) the strengthening of sustainability through the roles of community and educational institutions via training, performances, festivals, and the integration of arts learning based on local wisdom; and (4) the preservation of Kolotik’s cultural and philosophical values, such as harmony, togetherness, and human nature balance as a Sundanese identity that remains relevant amid the dynamics of modern society. Conclusion: Revitalization-based innovation enables Kolotik not only to endure as cultural heritage but also to evolve as an adaptive and functional learning instrument and local art product that sustainably reinforces Ciamis’s cultural identity.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to explore the personal branding strategies of musicians in live music performances within commercial public spaces, focusing on performances at Summarecon Mall Bandung. The research examines how musicians maintain their musical identity and personal branding when performing under genre regulations determined by mall management. Method: This research employs a qualitative approach using a multi-case study method. The research subjects consist of two bands that regularly perform at Summarecon Mall Bandung, namely Band Miracle and Band Soundmate. Data were collected through direct observation of live music performances, structured interviews with 14 band members, and interviews with approximately 30 mall visitors who attended the performances. Supporting data in the form of photographs, videos, and song setlists were also utilized. Data analysis was conducted using thematic analysis, and data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. Results and Discussion: The findings indicate that musicians’ personal branding in live music performances is not solely determined by musical genre, but is strongly shaped by performative strategies, audience interaction, and musicians’ attitudes toward performance regulations. Band Miracle emphasizes energetic stage performance, intensive audience interaction, and selective song rearrangements, while Band Soundmate constructs personal branding in a more flexible and organic manner through casual communication and relaxed stage presentation. Conclusion: Live music performances in shopping malls function as both strategic and challenging spaces for musicians in maintaining personal branding. Despite genre restrictions, musicians are able to preserve their musical identity through adaptive performance strategies and meaningful audience engagement.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the implementation of a beginner classical guitar teaching model using a combination of demonstration and practice methods, focusing on improving technical skills, rhythm understanding, and hand coordination. Method: A qualitative descriptive approach with an action research design was employed. Data were collected through direct observation during the learning process, interviews with students, field notes, and documentation over nine learning sessions. The analysis evaluated the development of students’ technical skills and identified challenges arising during the learning process. Results and Discussion: Findings indicate that the gradual combination of demonstration and practice methods effectively enhances students’ technical understanding, including playing posture, hand coordination, apoyando and tirando plucking techniques, and basic rhythm comprehension. Key challenges included finger stiffness, delayed chord transitions, and inconsistencies in plucking patterns. Demonstration provided clear visual guidance, enabling accurate imitation of techniques, while practice fostered motor memory through systematic repetition, supporting gradual and consistent skill improvement. Conclusion: The integration of demonstration and practice methods proved effective for beginner classical guitar learning. This approach not only enhances technical skills but also builds students’ confidence in instrument performance, demonstrating that the combination of visual modeling and hands-on practice is an effective pedagogical strategy in basic music education.
