Abstract

Hebephrenic schizophrenia is a subtype of schizophrenia marked by disorganized thinking, emotional disturbance, and impaired social functioning. Beyond its medical aspects, hebephrenic schizophrenia can be explained from a psychological lens through Adler's individual theory. Adler’s theory emphasizes the importance of life meaning, social interest, and responses to feelings of inferiority in shaping one’s personality and behavior, rather than solely focusing on clinical symptoms. This study aims to explore the psychological dynamics of a person with hebephrenic schizophrenia using Adlerian theory as a conceptual lens. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and reviewing the patient's medical records, involving one patient and one significant other. The findings reveal that the patient experiences intense feelings of inferiority, rooted in a history of neglectful parenting during childhood. This contributed to the development of a maladaptive lifestyle, making emotional expression difficult and prompting the creation of an imaginary world where the patient feels important and accepted. The study highlights how Adlerian concepts can offer deeper insight into the patient’s psychological experience beyond clinical symptoms. These findings suggest the potential of Adlerian-based interventions in supporting individuals with hebephrenic schizophrenia.

Abstract

Interpersonal relationships are an important factor in the formation of one's self-concept. This research is a type of qualitative research with a literature review approach. The keywords used are "interpersonal relationships", "self-concept", and “adolescent”. The results of this research show that the quality of interpersonal relationships influences individual self-concept. The more quality the interpersonal relationship has, the more positive self-concept the individual has. And conversely, failure in terms of interpersonal relationships will have a negative impact on one's self-concept. The quality of interpersonal relationships, along with individuals' awareness of themselves and their environment, plays a significant role in shaping both positive and negative self-concepts. This influence is evident not only in general circumstances but also within the specific context of college students.

Abstract

This clinical case study investigates the psychological profile of a 20-year-old female patient diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder at Menur Mental Hospital, Surabaya, Indonesia. The objective of this study is to examine the patient's emotional and behavioral patterns and explore contributing psychosocial factors. Data were collected through interviews, structured observations, and document analysis over a seven-day clinical internship. The patient experienced severe depressive episodes with psychotic features, emotional dysregulation, auditory hallucinations, suicidal ideation, and aggressive behavior. These symptoms were associated with unresolved trauma, familial instability, and lack of secure attachment figures. Analysis was conducted using Adler’s Individual Psychology framework, emphasizing inferiority feelings, maladaptive coping, and lack of social interest. The findings suggest that early trauma and inadequate support significantly impact the development and prognosis of bipolar disorder. This study highlights the importance of trauma-informed psychological interventions and contributes to the clinical understanding of mood disorders in young adults.
