Abstract

This chapter examines the Cold War as a global ideological confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union and analyzes its role in shaping the political, economic, and social transformation of modern Europe. Following the end of World War II, the rivalry between liberal-capitalist and socialist-communist ideologies led to the emergence of a bipolar international system that divided the world into opposing blocs. Although direct military conflict between the two superpowers never occurred, the Cold War was characterized by intense political competition, military alliances, nuclear arms races, proxy wars, and technological rivalry, particularly in the field of space exploration. This study employs a qualitative historical and library research approach by analyzing secondary data derived from academic books, peer-reviewed journals, and credible historical documents. The analysis focuses on the background, processes, and impacts of the Cold War, including its influence on European modernization, global political structures, economic development, military strategies, and technological advancements. The findings indicate that the Cold War significantly accelerated scientific and technological progress while simultaneously generating political instability, economic disparities, and prolonged regional conflicts. The chapter also discusses the collapse of the Soviet Union as a critical turning point that marked the end of the Cold War and reshaped the global order. Reforms introduced through Glasnost and Perestroika revealed structural weaknesses within the Soviet system and ultimately led to its disintegration in 1991. Overall, the Cold War and the modernization of Europe represent interconnected historical processes that have profoundly influenced contemporary international relations and global development.

Abstract

Abstract

This research explores the fundamental transition of European civilization from the theocentric constraints of the Middle Ages to the intellectual liberation of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. It examines how the shift toward humanism, rationalism, and empirical science dismantled the "Dark Ages" and established the foundations of modern Western identity. The study analyzes the contributions of pivotal figures like Copernicus and Galileo, alongside the evolution of political theories that eventually catalyzed global industrial and social revolutions.

Abstract

In the early middle ages, after the fall of the western roman empire, there was a blending of two major legal systems that influenced the development of law in europe: roman law and germanic law. Although these two legal systems were fundamentally different, they interacted and adapted under the influence of the barbarian kingdoms, particularly within the frankish kingdom. This article examines the comparison between roman law, based on written principles, and germanic law, which was more customary and oral, and how both were applied and synthesized under the rule of charlemagne. By analyzing the influence and implementation of these two legal systems, this study shows that while roman lawwas more structured and systematic, germanic law played an important role in maintaining social balance through community-based dispute resolution mechanisms. Through charlemagne’s efforts to codify laws in the capitularies, which incorporated elements from both legal systems, a legal synthesis was created that influenced the formation of modern legal systems in europe, including the civil law tradition. This research aims to provide insight into how these two different legal traditions interacted and contributed to the development of a more organized legal structure in the frankish kingdom, as well as their long-term impact on European.

Abstract

This article examines the Renaissance as a period of revival of art, culture, and science in Europe from the 14th century to the modern era, which emerged after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD and the dominance of the church during the Dark Ages. The Renaissance, derived from the Latin "re" (again) and "naitre" (born), marked the transition to the modern era with a more humanistic and worldly Greco-Roman cultural inspiration, beginning in Italy such as Florence before spreading throughout Europe.

Abstract

This article aims to trace the roots of Muslim thought by focusing on the epistemological aspects of Islamic thought, the major trends in the Islamic intellectual tradition, and their relevance to contemporary Muslim life in the midst of globalization. The method used is library research with a descriptive-analytical and hermeneutic approach, based on an Indonesian academic journal published in 2020–2024. The results of the discussion show that: (1) the epistemology of Islamic thought is integrative which is sourced from revelation as the main source, reason as an instrument of reasoning, and historical experience as a space for testing ideas; (2) there are five major schools of Islamic thought, namely kalam theology, Islamic philosophy, Sufism, jurisprudence (ushul al-fiqh), and the reform-modernization movement, each of which contributes to the formation of the Islamic intellectual tradition; (3) the dynamics of Islamic thought are influenced by internal factors in the form of methodological differences between sects, external factors in the form of colonialism and digital globalization, and local factors in the form of socio-cultural contexts such as Islam in the archipelago; (4) the relevance of classical Islamic thought is very important in building the intellectual awareness of the ummah, strengthening religious moderation, and responding to the challenges of globalization such as radicalism, secularization, and technological disruption. This article concludes that Islamic thought is a living, dynamic, and always open intellectual tradition to ijtihad and renewal, but still based on the principle of monotheism as the main axis. Understanding the roots of Islamic thought is not just a historical study, but is a practical necessity in building an adaptive Islamic civilization in the modern era. The novelty of this article lies in the effort to synthesize the three main dimensions of Islamic thought, namely the epistemological dimension (revelation-reason-history), the historical dimension (the development of the five major schools of Islamic thought), and the contemporary dimension (the challenges of digital globalization and religious moderation). This article also offers the perspective that Islamic thought is not only understood as the intellectual heritage of the past, but as an active and responsive knowledge system to the changing times, especially in the context of modern Muslim society in an era of global disruption.

Abstract

The growth of social media has significantly transformed the way Islamic da'wah is disseminated. This article examines the influence of social media on Islamic da'wah thought in the digital era, along with its opportunities and challenges. Through a literature study employing a descriptive-analytical approach, the findings indicate that social media has made da'wah more interactive, expansive, and borderless, while simultaneously driving developments in its methods, content, and objectives. On the other hand, challenges such as radical content, religiously charged hoaxes, and misrepresentations of Islam continue to shape the digital da'wah landscape. Accordingly, an intelligent, contextual, and moderate Islamic thought-based approach to da'wah is necessary so that social media can serve as an effective and responsible medium for spreading the faith.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze Ibn Rushd's rational thought and its influence on the intellectual development of the Western world. Ibn Rushd was one of the leading Muslim philosophers who succeeded in establishing a synthesis between the Greek philosophical tradition and Islamic teachings through a systematic rational approach. This study uses a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data was obtained from various books, scientific journal articles, and relevant academic sources, then analyzed using content analysis and comparative analysis techniques. The results of the study show that Ibn Rushd's rationality rests on the burhani (demonstrative) method that integrates empirical observation, logic, and rational argumentation in acquiring knowledge. He emphasized that reason and revelation are two sources of truth that come from God so that they cannot contradict each other. When there is a conflict between religious texts and the results of rational reasoning, Ibn Rushd offers the concept  of takwil as an interpretive solution that allows the creation of harmonization between the two. In addition, his intellectual response to Al-Ghazali's criticism through the work of Tahafut al-Tahafut strengthened the legitimacy of philosophy in the Islamic tradition. Ibn Rushd's thought was then transmitted to Europe through the translation of his works into Latin and gave birth to the tradition of Averroism which influenced the development of rationalism, freedom of thought, scholasticism, and the Renaissance movement. Thus, Ibn Rushd can be seen as an intellectual bridge that connects Islamic and Western civilization and makes an important contribution to the development of philosophy, science, and the tradition of modern thought.

Abstract

This study explores the intellectual contribution of Imam Al-Ghazali in shaping the paradigm of Islamic education and its relevance to the challenges of contemporary civilization, departing from a deep concern over the phenomenon of axiological imbalance in the era of globalization, where the acceleration of scientific and technological progress runs in the opposite direction to the maturity of moral values and the depth of spiritual consciousness of modern humans that is increasingly eroding. Using a library research approach  based on comparative-critical and descriptive-qualitative analysis of a representative corpus of scientific literature, this study investigates three main dimensions at once: Al-Ghazali's epistemological contribution to the trajectory of Islamic civilization, the multidimensional influence of his thought on the education, philosophy, and morality of Muslim society, and his transformative relevance in responding to the complexity of the challenges of modern civilization continue to move dynamically. The findings of the study reveal that Al-Ghazali's great legacy rests on the harmonious orchestration of rational reason, the authority of revelation, and spiritual appreciation as epistemological trias that are mutually supportive and inseparable from each other, placing the internalization of morality as the highest maqashid of education, carrying out intelligent selective criticism of the Greek philosophical tradition without falling into total rejection, and initiating the doctrine  of tazkiyatun nafs as a way of purifying the soul which is a fundamental prerequisite for the manifestation of moral karimah in social life. This study concludes that Al-Ghazali's holistic educational paradigm is not at all just a historical artifact of classical Islamic civilization frozen in ancient texts, but serves as an epistemological compass that remains alive, productive, and transformative in guiding the construction of a modern education system that is intellectually, morally, and spiritually intact in the midst of the vortex of the crisis of contemporary digital civilization.

Abstract

Globalization has led to increasingly intensive interactions between individuals and groups with diverse cultural, religious, and ethnic backgrounds. This condition has given rise to a multicultural society that offers opportunities for cooperation and social progress, but also presents challenges in the form of intolerance, discrimination, social conflict, and identity crises. This article aims to examine Islamic thought in facing the challenges of multiculturalism in the era of globalization. The method used is a literature study by analyzing various sources of literature related to Islamic thought and the concept of multiculturalism. The results of the study indicate that Islam has a strong foundation in supporting multicultural life through the values of tolerance (tasamuh), justice (al'adl), brotherhood (ukhuwwah), and moderation (wasathiyah). Contemporary Islamic thought emphasizes the importance of interfaith dialogue, respect for diversity, and strengthening humanitarian values in building a harmonious social life. Therefore, Islamic thought can be one solution in facing the various challenges of multiculturalism in the era of globalization and contribute to creating a peaceful, inclusive, and just society.
