Abstract

Air pollution poses serious environmental and health concern, so innovative educational strategies are needed to make students aware and propose active solutions. This study aimed at developing a Teaching-Learning Sequence (TLS) in teaching air pollution for high school students, through the interdisciplinary project-based learning (PjBL). The data for the TLS development were from three key sources: journal articles, proceedings articles, and book chapters collected from Scopus database. Analysis technique was using the Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) through the processes of identifying meaning units, coding, categorizing, and synthesizing the findings into the TLS framework. The resulting TLS was arranged into four quadrants: (A) causes and impacts of air pollution, (B) pollutants and their measurement technologies, (C) device construction with wireless communication, and (D) connections to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The proposed TLS is intended to nurture the development of 21st-century skills, including problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and environmental awareness, as well as promoting students’ understanding of SDGs related to health, climate action, and sustainable cities. Three experts have been validated the TLS’s relevance to the high school curriculum, suitability of its learning design, and ease of implementation, while also providing meaningful suggestions for improvement. While further field testing is required to evaluate its effectiveness, the current research contributes to innovative environmental education by actively engaging students in solving real-world problems and fostering skills essential for addressing global environmental challenges.

Abstract

The main purpose of the study is to determine the effect of asynchronous learning to academic performance and students’ motivation towards Science. It is necessary since motivation serves as a foundation for better understanding of science concepts in an asynchronous setting. The respondents are 201 grade 11 students of Iligan Computer Institute (ICI) who are enrolled during the Academic Year 2020-2021. The ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model was used in the study for the development of asynchronous lesson on Genetic Engineering with Google Classroom as the online platform. The research utilized SMTSL (Students Motivation Towards Science Learning) questionnaire developed by Tuan, et al. (2005) composed of 35 questions encompassing six (6) domains of motivation namely, self-efficacy, active learning strategies, science learning value, performance goal, achievement goal and learning environment stimulation. Quantitative data together with qualitative analysis showed that students are moderately motivated towards science learning in an asynchronous environment. The highest identified domain is science learning value indicating that students find the relevance of science with daily life which makes them motivated to learn science even in a remote learning environment where there is no direct contact and supervision. In contrast, self-efficacy and performance goal are the least domains suggesting that students are least concerned with their own ability to perform well in science learning tasks and they do not compete with other students and get attention from the teacher. Using the researcher-made achievement test and performance task to measure their academic performance, 80% of the students belong to approaching proficiency, proficient and advanced groups showing that students did well in science in an asynchronous learning environment.  Moreover, students’ motivation was significantly correlated with science academic performance so science academic performance can be used as indirect evidence of students’ motivation. Based on these findings, it is recommended that curriculum experts and educators consider factors of motivation in revisiting the science curriculum in an asynchronous environment.

Abstract

The problem of student learning difficulties and the factors causing it are very important to know. The first step that can be taken is to use a diagnostic test as a reference indicator in identifying student learning difficulties. The purpose of this study was to determine the difficulties in learning parabolic motion and its causal factors experienced by students of the 2018 Physics Education Department. This type of research is descriptive. The subjects of this study were 19 students of the 2018 Cenderawasih University in the Physics Education Department. Data collection techniques used are test, interview, and documentation. The results of the overall assessment of the diagnostic test showed that 19 students had not yet completed achieving the learning objectives in understanding the parabolic motion sub-material because the highest score obtained by one of the students was 53, while the minimum completeness reached a score of 56. These difficulties are influenced by internal factors, namely body defects, fatigue, attention, readiness, habits, how to receive lessons, boredom; and external factors, namely the lecturer’s teaching methods, discipline, building conditions, forms of community life, and weather conditions.

Abstract

This study aims to validate a research‐skills assessment instrument for pre-service science teachers using Rasch modeling to evaluate reliability, item fit, and unidimensionality. The instrument was designed to measure the extent of research skills among undergraduate students in science education programs. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 114 participants recruited through quota sampling from several universities in Riau, Indonesia. Respondents completed a 40-item research-skills instrument. Data were analyzed with the Rasch model using Winsteps version 3.73. The results indicate satisfactory internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.75), excellent item reliability (0.97), and acceptable person reliability (0.75). Rasch diagnostics further support the unidimensionality of the instrument, indicating that the items predominantly measure a single latent construct of research skills. These findings provide evidence for both the reliability and construct validity of the instrument within this population. Practically, the validated instrument can be used by higher education institutions to diagnose and monitor the research competencies of pre-service science teachers and to evaluate the effectiveness of research-oriented instructional interventions. By employing Rasch analysis, this study enhances the precision and defensibility of measurement in the context of research-skills assessment in Indonesia, offering a foundation for ongoing refinement and wider application in similar educational settings
