Abstract

The persistent conflict resulting from distinctions in our diverse world are sustained by suspicion and fear in public life, yet cultural products offer insights into societal issues, highlighting the significance of mutual respect and authentic freedom. This study examined Soumission (2015) by Houellebecq as its main data source to trace Islam and deconstruct intertextually its misconceptions in the novel. This study uses qualitative research steps in literary studies, namely by reading many times data sources, making notes, grouping data thematically, and analyzing it inductively. Results showed that in this novel, Islam is portrayed as a threatening, frightening, ambiguous religion that favors a patriarchal system that places women in a subordinate position. Based on an examination of the Quran and Hadith of Islam reveals that Islam is a peaceful religion that respects its adherents and provides them with clear instructions on what is right and wrong, prohibited and permitted. Critical readers have the right to question the portrayal of Islam in this work if it aims to ridicule religious individuals, particularly Muslims, necessitating a prudent response to counter the author's deception. Keywords: déconstruction, laí¯cité, metanarration, politique, satire

Abstract

The ability to read is a language skill that is very important in supporting general academic abilities. Based on research, most study programs at higher education institutions do not include critical reading as a subject. For this reason, this study aims to produce a construct model of critical reading competencies in non-literary texts which is used as a guideline for evaluating learning outcomes (LO) in critical reading classes. The ptesent study is developmental research with the stages of preliminary study activities, literature studies, field analysis, and competency product development. The data source for the study is analysis of data needs to build critical reading competences. Results of the study show that there are five steps of activities carried out in critical reading, namely: 1) surveying the text, 2) understanding the contents of the text, 3) analyzing the text, 4) criticizing the text, and 5) evaluating and publishing. Step (1) determines the type of text to be criticized, identifing the identity and background of the author. Step (2) determines the theme of the text, shows the characteristics of the text, and states the main ideas of each paragraph. Step (3) identifies the structure of the text, states facts and opinions, determines the pattern of paragraph development, identifies relationships between main ideas and explanations, restates implied meanings, and understands the relevances of the relationships among text structures. Step (4) shows the discrepancy between the theme and the content, the description in each part of the text, the ideas in the paragraphs, the details of facts, and the author's arguments. Step (5) assesses the accuracy and suitability of the facts. The final stage is publication of results showing strengths and weaknesses of the text.Keywords: construct model, critical reading, non-literary text

Abstract

This study aims to show the hidden agenda in the 99 Cahaya di Langit Eropa as a travel literature. The method used is divided into two, namely data collection methods and data analysis methods. The data in this study are in the form of statements about the content, nature, characteristics, condition of something or symptoms, or statements about the relationships between something and something else. Data analysis methods used in this study are historical methods, comparisons, and logical inference. This research shows that the 99 Cahaya di Langit Eropa has ethical and political implications which are the fundamental agenda in travel stories. The ethical implications of this novel are first, by demeaning Indonesia, this novel follows the ethical violations committed by Western orientalism. Second, by demeaning the West, this novel also commits the same ethical violation, namely demeaning other nations. The political implication of this novel is an attempt to free oneself from the hegemony of colonial orientalism, to elevate the dignity of the colonized nation. The answer to liberation offered to Indonesia is a typical answer given by Indonesian Muslim scholars, namely by making Indonesia an Islamic country that is Western and Islamic West. Abstract

The dominant values of colonialism influenced indigenous society in defining the status of women and worsening their treatment. This influence can be seen in the concubinage system experienced by the nyai. The figure of nyai not only received systemic oppression, but was also portrayed badly through colonial-era literature. In contrast to colonial-era literature, Indonesian literature in the postcolonial era tries to represent the figure of nyai with her intersectional identity, as well as reveal their resistance to the patterns of systemic oppression experienced in the concubinage system. This research uses a descriptive-qualitative research design. This research design aims to describe the intersectional identity of nyai and their resistance to forms of oppressiveness in Indonesian short stories. The data and information found from the selected short stories will be interpreted qualitatively using Kimberle Crenshaw's intersectionality perspective. The data sources are selected porpusively, namely Indonesian short stories that represent nyai and concubinage in the Dutch East Indies, including (1) Stambul dua Pedang (2013), (2) Racun untuk Tuan (2011), and (3) Keringat dan Susu (2010), all three by Iksaka Banu, and (4) Kutukan Dapur (2003) by Eka Kurniawan. The data are in the form of story facts that include story sequences, characters, settings, themes, and other literary means from data sources that contain information related to the research problem. The data was obtained using reading and note-taking techniques. Furthermore, it was analyzed qualitatively by using Crenshaw's intersectionality perspective. The results of this study show that the intersectionality identity of the nyai in the four short stories above is a woman with charming physique and skills, colonized indigenous race, poverty and low social class, patriarchal system, and colonial system. The oppressions found are intimidation, expulsion, denial of rights as a woman, and murder. The resistance found is utilizing one's own skills, help from other parties, enjoying the role and surrendering to the situation.Keywords: Intersectional identity, resistance, oppression, subaltern, Crenshaw

Abstract

This article presents a report on the needs analysis of Javanese learning for speakers of other languages. Applying the descriptive-analytical method, this study used data gathered from the survey of 57 participants from 27 different countries. The present study revealed that the most difficult aspect of studying Javanese is on mastering its vocabulary (54.8%). This condition limited the learners' confidence to engage in any conversation with the locals (74.2%) and made them less progressive in some other related competencies such as reading and writing. Based on the participants' responses to the survey, the approach recommended to facilitate the program of Javanese for speakers of other languages is the communicative approach. The design of the program targeted proficiency in communicating using Javanese. Vocabulary learning is needed in real situations and contexts. Therefore, the learners could improve their capacity in Javanese and engage with the local people better.  Through its comprehensive examination of the challenges, opportunities, and potential solutions, this research not only contributes to the field of language education but also reinforces the value of embracing linguistic diversity as a cornerstone of our shared human experience.

Abstract

The This study is objected to describe the decomposition of meaning that includes distortion, narrowing and expansion as well as omissions in the translation of cultural terms in a novel titled alfu laylah wa laylah along with their impact on target text. This research utilized a descriptive method with a qualitative research approach. The data collection method used in several stages, as follow: 1) reading the entire contents of the novel; 2) identifying; 3) recording and; 4) giving code and page on each data. The data were subsequently analyzed in several steps including 1) classifying the types of cultural terms in the novel; 2) identifying the meaning of cultural terms in source language and target language; 3) comparing two words in source language and target language; 4) interpreting the findings in form of analysis. It was 29 data found, there were seven cultural terms that experience meaning distortion, twelve with narrowing and expansion of meaning, and ten others underwent omission. In conclusion, four factors of information reduction result in loss.

Abstract

Group work in language learning has been praised for its success stories in encouraging collaboration and interaction among learners. However, a scant attention has been given to explore how students perceive the Other and how group work can be a platform for identity construction. Within the context of EFL classroom where different cultures and values interact, this study focuses on students' preference towards group work and peers, which is reflected through their perception and behaviours towards different attributes of the constructed Self and Other. The data were collected through questionnaires involving 241 students of English Literature Study Program at a state university in Indonesia. The results show that, first, despite the challenges to embrace difference among the members, group work is still preferred over individual work for the advantages, productivity, and enjoyment it offers. Second, while friendship is seen as a crucial contributor for a successful group work, students choose peers based on personalities and skills on English language, teamwork, communication, leadership, and technology. This preference motivates stereotyping and othering, whereby the good characteristics of the preferred Self are contrasted with the bad qualities of the dis-preferred Other. This study has proven that subtle othering prevails in group work practices in the academic environment and that such othering practices have influenced students' behaviours, roles, and abilities to engage and succeed in group work. Pedagogical attempts should be devoted to decrease othering, so as to foster awareness towards difference, in order to create a more accommodative environment for language learning.

Abstract

This article examines hegemony spread through Japanese popular series, Doraemon. In 2008, the character Doraemon was made the Anime Ambassador and was sent around the world to campaign for Japanese popular culture. This appointment is part of the Japanese government's public diplomacy strategy. Doraemon is then synonymous with the perfect character figure, which has become one of the symbols of the progress of the Japanese state. Hegemony theory is used to dissect how ideology works through characters that have become state icons and are widely accepted with a very positive image. The results of the analysis show that patriarchal hegemony works through the depiction of scary female characters, male superiority, and the role of the media as a means of ideological dissemination. The Doraemon series preserves the patriarchy wrapped in a beautiful dream story of a future with Japan's advanced technology.

Abstract

孺子歌图 Ruzi Ge Tu "˜Chinese Mother Goose Rhymes' is an anthology cumulated, rendered and illustrated by Isaac Taylor Headland (1859-1942) in 1900, which comprises 152 nursery rhymes predominantly prevailing in Beijing during the Qing (1644-1912) dynasty and aims to nurture sympathy for Chinese children and paint portraits of the masses from both ends of the social spectrum. Chinese nursery rhymes are replete with depictions pertaining to familial bonds and adoration, yet they simultaneously abound with fiendish plots and representations in graphic detail as well as political statements alluding to historical events and personages, parallel to their Western counterparts. In Chinese Mother Goose Rhymes, there is a range of nursery rhymes concerning decease, suicide, impoverishment, dilapidation and animal abuse, whereas only a proportion of them entail educational purposes and convey moral values.

Abstract

The present study uncovered the cultural contents of the Indonesian ELT textbook for tenth-grade secondary-level students Bahasa Inggris "Work in Progress" based on the cultural types using content analysis. The book is chosen because it is nationally used and based on the curriculum Merdeka 2022. This study focused on analyzing the cultural contents, represented with graphical images integrated with text (e.g., pictures with monologue, dialogue, or description). The findings showed that among the four types of culture, the Target culture was dominantly represented in the textbook 59 times (50,9%). Then, it was followed by the culture neutral 23 times (19,8%), the international culture 18 times (15,5%), and the last source culture 16 times (13,8%). The various and well-organized cultural content proportion should be put more attention.
