Abstract

Abstract: Sufism as psychotherapy provides treatment based on Islamic teachings that is intended for every human being who experiences mental illness. Mental illness referred to as severe mental disorder (psychosis), one of which is schizophrenia, which sufferers tend to experience relapse (recurrence). The purpose of this study is to find out how the use of Sufism as psychotherapy in dealing with relapse of people with schizophrenia and to prove empirical facts that Sufism can be used as a psychotherapy for people with schizophrenia based on previous studies. This research method uses literature review, literature searches are carried out through Google Scholar. Search results from Google Scholar found 12 journals, and 7 journals were eliminated, then 5 journals were accepted and analyzed. The results showed that Sufism as a psychotherapy could be a form of treatment for people with schizophrenia. The forms of Sufism as psychotherapy are Qur'anic healing therapy, Sufi healing therapy and spiritual neuroscience, as well as collaboration of Sufistic psychotherapy with traditional suwuk bobok Jowo, then audio therapy of the Qur'an, ablution therapy, prayer, and remembrance. Sufism as psychotherapy can make the heart (qalb) and soul calm, serene, and peaceful. So that the symptoms of schizophrenics such as anxiety, hallucinations, and delusions can be reduced. Abstract

This study aims to determine the subjective well-being of adolescents in Banda Aceh. Adolescent well-being was measured by subjective well-being scales, which comprised with cognitive and affective aspects. A quantitative descriptive analysis approach was used in this study. The participants were 293 teenagers from various schools and universities that spread across Banda Aceh, both public and private. The data collection instruments used were the SWLS and SPANE scales. Results of this study indicate that, life satisfaction of adolescents in Banda Aceh majority was categorized in "quite satisfied" as much as 41.3%, followed by "satisfied" as much as 27.6%, and "very satisfied" as much as 12.3%, while the other 18.8% are categorized in “less satisfied” and “dissatisfied”. Further, the participants of this research experience positive emotions more than negative emotions, as indicated by SPANE scale that showed "very balanced" = 31.1%, "balanced" = 65.5%, "less balanced" = 3.4%. This research approved that adolescents in Banda Aceh tend to have more positive feelings than negative feelings. This study also illustrates a new perspective in revealing the condition of adolescents who tend to be good, which was previously revealed that adolescence tends to feel full of "storm and stress".Keywords: Positive Emotions; Negative Emotions; Life Satisfaction; Adolescents

Abstract

This study aimed to develop a scale that measures a construct of Filipino Psychology, which is pakikipagkapwa-tao, a key construct in Filipino Psychology grounded in Enriquez’s "Kapwa" theory, which emphasizes the importance of shared identity and interconnectedness in understanding Filipino social behavior. Despite its importance, there is a lack of empirical tools to measure pakikipagkapwa-tao, creating a need for a culturally relevant and psychometrically sound instrument. With this, the study seeks to address this gap by developing a new scale that captures five dimensions of pakikipagkapwa-tao: sympathy (pakikiramay), cooperative endeavor (bayanihan), hospitality (mabuting pagtanggap sa bisita), sensitivity to others' feelings (pakikiramdam), and debt of gratitude (utang na loob). The respondents of this study were Filipino college students, aged 18 to 22 years old, currently residing in Cavite, and were enrolled in a University for Academic Year 2022- 2023. With this, the researchers of this study obtained a total number of 501 respondents.The study utilized confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) as its statistical treatment. As a result, the overall scale consists of twenty-four (24) items with alphas between 0.83 and 0.67 coming from factor analysis solutions and are based on the CFA and EFA. Abstract

Abstract: The scoping review explores the prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of psychosis in Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting the unique cultural and systemic challenges faced in the region. Despite an estimated global psychosis prevalence of 3%, Sub-Saharan Africa experiences a disproportionate burden, exacerbated by poverty, under-resourced healthcare systems, and cultural stigmas. Studies report a varying prevalence of psychotic symptoms across different countries, such as Kenya (8%) and Tanzania (3.9%). However, due to minimal mental health resources, psychosis often remains undiagnosed or untreated, particularly in rural areas. The review emphasizes the cultural lens through which psychosis is viewed, with many communities attributing symptoms to witchcraft, spiritual possession, or divine punishment. Consequently, individuals frequently seek care from traditional healers before accessing formal psychiatric services. The stigma surrounding mental illness further deters timely medical intervention, often leading to prolonged untreated psychosis and poor health outcomes. Diagnosis of psychosis in Sub-Saharan Africa faces additional barriers due to the reliance on Western diagnostic tools, such as the DSM-5 and ICD-10, which may not align with local cultural norms. Behaviors considered psychotic in Western contexts might be interpreted as spiritual experiences in African settings. As such, the absence of culturally adapted diagnostic instruments complicates accurate diagnosis and treatment. The treatment landscape is similarly complex, with limited access to psychotropic medications and mental health professionals. The scarcity of community-based mental health services results in long treatment delays and high relapse rates. The review calls for developing culturally appropriate diagnostic tools, expanding mental health services, and addressing stigma to improve psychosis care in Sub-Saharan Africa. Addressing these issues is essential to reducing the burden of untreated mental illness and enhancing mental health outcomes in the region. Abstract

STEM education is a method of instruction that allows students to apply concepts from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to a variety of contexts, preparing students for the real world by teaching them to respond to change and equipping them with skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity and STEM anxiety is the worry, avoidance, or fear of studying science or mathematics. The study sought to investigate the relationship between students' STEM education anxiety and instructors' self-efficacy and expectancy-value beliefs, as there has been little empirical research into the impact of such factors on anxiety. This study examined the association between Bangladeshi secondary school students' STEM education anxiety and their teachers' own teaching efficacy and teaching outcome expectancy beliefs. The convenience sampling method was used to collect responses from 165 secondary school pupils and their 50 teachers. Surveys were administered to assess teachers' self-efficacy and outcome expectations, as well as students' STEM education anxiety. The analyses included mean, standard deviation, correlation, independent sample t-test, and multiple regression analysis. Teachers’ teaching efficacy and beliefs (PTEB) and teaching outcome expectancy beliefs (TOEB) were negatively correlated with students’ STEM education anxiety. The study highlights how teachers' self-efficacy and outcome expectations affect students' STEM-related anxiety.

Abstract

This study explored the experiences of solo parents who provide simultaneous support to their minor children and senior parents in selected resettlement areas in Cavite, Philippines. Specifically, it sought to determine the reasons for their role pursuance, unravel the adversities they encountered and the coping strategies they employed, and identify their motivations for continuously juggling their multigenerational responsibilities. Using narrative analysis, the stories of eight participants selected through non-proportional quota sampling were uncovered and interpreted. Findings revealed that the high regard they placed on cultural family values and traditions drove them to become caregivers for two generations. The demands of having young and old dependents led them to face financial constraints, unfulfilled aspirations, work interference, and health-compromising behaviors associated with their role as family mediators. Social support systems and multiple sources of livelihood played a significant part in easing these burdens. Despite the hardships entailed in their household responsibilities, they managed to carry on due to the long-term care needs of family members and the positive feelings they acquired from caregiving. This may further support the need for implementation or amendment of policy programs intended to provide recognition and workplace consideration for individuals in this unique familial position.

Abstract

Abstract: The pursuit of higher education in an alien environment can give rise to a number of novel experiences and opportunities, which may require additional adjustment efforts. Homesickness is a phenomenon commonly experienced by overseas students as they transition from a familiar environment to one that is foreign. Being separated from a familiar environment, which has constituted a part of one's life for an extended period, can give rise to a range of emotions, including sadness, anxiety, and homesickness. To meet the needs of international students, it is important to consider their psychological well-being, particularly in terms of social adjustment and self-acceptance. Identifying and addressing factors that contribute to homesickness is crucial. In this study, a qualitative approach with a phenomenological perspective was employed, and a purposive sampling technique was utilized. The data collection techniques employed in this study involved observation and interviews at Prof. Dr. HAMKA Muhammadiyah University over a period of approximately one month. Three overseas students from Java were interviewed, representing the regions of East Java, Central Java, and West Java. The results of this study provide an overview of the influence of psychological well-being and coping strategies applied by overseas students on homesickness experienced during overseas studies.

Abstract

Parental expectations play a role in shaping parental involvement, potentially leading to positive outcomes for children. Despite the importance of these factors, research on parental expectations and involvement has been limited in the past two decades. Therefore, this study aims to explore the connection between parental expectations and involvement through a meta-analysis. Following the PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a thorough analysis of existing literature. Employing a meta-analytical approach, data were collected from ten reputable international journal databases, including Scopus, SAGE, Emerald, Web of Science, Proquest, PubMed, Taylor and Francis, Google Scholar, Springer, and Science Direct. The inclusion criteria focused on research centered on parental expectations and parental involvement, resulting in eight articles included in our final analysis. The evaluation of quality employed the Appraisal Tool for Cross-Sectional Studies (AXIS) to gauge bias risk. Results indicate a noteworthy correlation between parental expectations and involvement (r=0.209, p0.001), implying that higher parental expectations correlate with greater parental involvement and vice versa. Moreover, our analysis revealed high heterogeneity (I2 = 96.44%) among the studies, indicating substantial variability. Additionally, the bias assessment (p = 0.048) indicated evidence of publication bias across the studies. Future research opportunities lie in developing studies that delve into the association between parental expectation and parental involvement, examining how this relationship functions independently from other variables in specific contexts such as student achievements or early literacy.

Abstract

This study analyzes the manifestation of patience as a coping mechanism in Islamic psychology, focusing on the comparison of sociocultural contexts between Indonesian and Egyptian students. The background of this study emphasizes the importance of patience as a stress management strategy in Islam, which can be affected by cultural differences. The research used a mixed-method approach, combining a quantitative survey and qualitative interviews. The survey involved 100 university students, 50 each from Indonesia and Egypt, to measure the level of patience and coping mechanisms, while in-depth interviews were conducted with 20 students to explore their sociocultural understanding. The results showed that there were no significant differences between Indonesian and Egyptian students in terms of manifestations of patience, with identical mean scores of sociocultural context and coping mechanisms in both groups (82.54 and 82.96). However, qualitative interviews revealed differences in how they interpreted patience; Indonesian students tended to see patience as a means of maintaining social harmony, while Egyptian students emphasized the spiritual aspect guided by religious teachings. The conclusion of this study is that patience as a coping mechanism in Islamic psychology has a universal foundation, but the sociocultural context affects its interpretation and application. The findings have significance for the development of culturally sensitive psychological interventions, especially in supporting Muslim students in dealing with academic stress and other life challenges.

Abstract

Happiness can give immunity to the individual’s physical and psychological so that they become strong in facing pressure. In severe social and psychological conditions, happiness becomes essential and needed. This study aims to analyze al-Ghazali's concept of achieving happiness. The research uses the content analysis method with primary sources as the main reference. The research results show that achieving happiness in al-Ghazali consists of three stages. Namely, (1) recognizing one’s nature and character, (2) placing the heart as a leader, (3) directing attention to God. This stage necessitates studies on self and psychology, essential for cleansing the soul. In management, al-Ghazali's concept of heart leadership is in harmony with al-Farabi's leadership theory, which states that leaders must be able to direct their subordinates to happiness. The implication of this concept is that there is a holistic approach to improving the quality of human life as a whole in the fields of psychology, education and spirituality. Ultimately, all potential and activity must be directed to God as the source of happiness to achieve true happines.Keywords: al-Ghazali; Happiness; Know Yourself; Leadership of the Heart
