Journal of Educational, Health, and Community Psychology (JEHCP) published an article, and empirical study that have originality, novelty and fill the gap of knowledge, that focused on educational psychology, health psychology and community psychology. JEHCP is an open access peer reviewed, multidisciplinary journal that publishes quality studies related to psychology. JEHCP is interdisciplinary in approach, and includes to reports of qualitative case studies, quantitative experiments and surveys, mixed method studies, action researches, meta-analyses, and discussions of conceptual and methodological issues. The field of educational psychology includes the effectiveness of educational interventions, the psychology of teaching, and the social psychology of schools as organizations, motor skills and other psycho-physiological processes; cognitive development involving areas such as problem solving, language acquisition; social, personality, and emotional development; self-concept and identity formation. The field of Health Psychology includes the stress-related ilnesses, the health coping strategy, resiliency, work on health attitudes and behaviour, health locus of control, quality of life in chronic disease, influence of emotion on health and health-related behaviours, psychological interventions in health and disease as well as psychological aspects of prevention. The field of Community Psychology includes research, evaluation, assessment and intervention, and review articles that deal with human behavior in community settings. Articles of interest include descriptions and evaluations of service programs and projects, studies of youth, parenting, and family development, methodology and design for work in the community, the interaction of groups in the larger community, and criminals and corrections.

Abstract

This study was conducted to uncover the lives of the unmarried elderly in the Southern Mindanao by providing useful information about their psychological well-being in terms of their positive thoughts, positive feelings, triumphs or successes, hopes or aspirations, and meaningful reasons for defying social norms. The study has ten (10) informants, composed of five unmarried men and five unmarried women carefully selected based on their predefined characteristics. In conducting the study, the researcher utilized a semi-structured interview guide questionnaire that was validated by three experts. The data were gathered through an in-depth interview with each of the informants, observations, and conversations with some key informants. All pertinent data were obtained using an electronic audio recorder and observational field notes. Consequently, all relevant data were transcribed, reviewed, and analyzed extensively through a thorough coding process and triangulation methods to come up with valid and reliable results. The results were discussed through a thematic analysis matrix to represent the data in an organized and comprehensive manner. After carefully examining the gathered data, this phenomenological inquiry has found significant findings. Particularly, their positive thoughts revealed three major themes, including individual functioning, social functioning, and a secured social network. Their positive feelings identified only one central theme, which is self-actualization. Only one main theme has emerged for their triumphs or successes, namely, their life accomplishments. For their hopes or aspirations, it also came up with one key theme: quality of life. Lastly, their meaningful reasons for breaking social norms have identified two significant themes: predetermination and self-determination. As indicated in the results of the study, the informants' positive attitudes across all aspects of their lives helped them understand their purpose or life's meaning. Thus, their optimistic view of life enabled them to function positively, which contributed significantly to their psychological well-being.

Abstract

Children’s problem behaviors should be managed properly while their prosocial behaviors should be nurtured. As parents play a significant role in children’s lives, their well-being and psychological distress could influence children’s behavior through different mechanisms. This study investigated the roles of effective parenting (positive encouragement and parent-child relationship) and ineffective parenting (parental inconsistency and coercive parenting) in mediating the relationships between parental well-being and psychological distress, and children’s problem and prosocial behavior as reported by parents. One-hundred and seventy-three parents of primary school children completed a paper and pencil survey consisting relevant measures. Mediation analyses using PROCESS macros showed that parental well-being and psychological distress significantly influenced children’s problem behavior through effective and ineffective parenting, respectively. However, only parental well-being significantly influenced children’s prosocial behavior through effective parenting. The results highlight the importance of parental well-being, as it fosters positive parenting practices and promotes prosocial behavior in children. Keywords: child problem behaviors, child prosocial behaviors, parenting, psychological distress, parental well-being.

Abstract

This research focuses on adolescents with mental health issues such as stress and anxiety. Stress is described as general daily pressure that affects daily behavior, while anxiety is defined as excessive worry about future events. Both stress and anxiety are closely associated with low self-esteem, which refers to an individual's perception and evaluation of their ability to face and solve problems. Various interventions can enhance self-esteem, with art therapy being particularly effective for adolescents. In this study, the State Self-Esteem Scale (SSES) was used to measure self-esteem, and the DASS-21 was used to assess stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms. Five female participants completed the intervention, which consisted of eight sessions conducted over five days. This research utilized a quasi-experimental pre- and post-test method. The intervention results showed a significant increase in global self-esteem scores, as well as changes in stress, anxiety, and depression levels

Abstract

 Social conflict in Indonesia is caused by stereotypes, social identity and prejudice. This issue prompts research aimed at developing a model for the intention of social conflict in urban communities with predictors of stereotypes, social identity, and prejudice as early warning systems. This research refers to both correlational and sequential models. The study subjects were high school students in Sebatik, Nunukan, North Kalimantan. The sampling technique employed was quota-cluster random sampling, resulting in the participation of 108 adolescents. Data collection utilized scales for stereotypes, social identity, prejudice, and social conflict intention. Data analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling, specifically confirmatory factor analysis. The results indicate that the model for the intention of social conflict in urban communities meets the criteria for goodness-of-fit statistics, as evidenced by the values of chi-square=44.1, df=59, P value=0.92543, and RMSEA=0.000. Based on the research findings, stereotypes and social identity shape prejudice, thereby reinforcing the intention of social conflict in urban communities.

Abstract

It is assumed that the great challenges and responsibilities at work can affect the work engagement of teachers who teach in the 3T (Frontier, Outermost, Disadvantaged) areas of Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan. This research aims to examine the influence of self-efficacy and love of work on teacher work engagement in the 3T area. The method in this research uses the correlation method. The population used in this research were teachers who taught in the 3T area of Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan, both in public and private elementary, middle, high school or vocational school, and had worked for at least one year. This research uses a proportional stratified sampling technique to determine the sample. The instruments used to collect data used the modified Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), self-efficacy scale, and love of work scale. Based on data processing using multiple linear regression analysis, it shows that the coefficient R=0.644, F=151.449 (p<0.01), so it can be concluded that simultaneously self-efficacy and love of work have an influence on teacher work engagement in the 3T area of Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan.

Abstract

Family functioning has a broad impact on the psychological condition of family members, making it a variable often examined in research. The instruments used to measure family functioning vary in the dimensions they assess due to different theoretical approaches. One such measurement tool that comprehensively assesses dimensions and aligns with Indonesian Government Regulations is the Beach Center Family Quality of Life Scale (BCFQLS). However, its utilization in research in Indonesia remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric quality of the BCFQLS using confirmatory factor analysis. The participants in this study were 331 married individuals who lived with their spouses and had at least one child. Abstract

Efforts to realize student well-being are of particular concern in Indonesia. Unfortunately, a scale measuring student well-being for elementary school students is still scarce. This study aimed to develop and validate a scale for the well-being of elementary school students in Indonesia. The scale was developed based on the Student Well-being Model and analyzed using the Rasch Model. This study involved 414 respondents who were Grade 5 or Grade 6 elementary school students in Malang city. Based on the analysis of the Rasch model, there are 19 items (out of 28 items) whose values meet the criteria for outfit MNSQ, outfit ZSTD, and point measure correlation. This scale has a dimensionality value of 42.9%, item separation of 6.93, and item reliability of 0.98, and the results of the DIF analysis showed no bias toward gender or class identity. Overall, it can be concluded that the Student Well-being in Elementary Schools scale has good psychometric properties, so it is suitable for measuring student well-being in Elementary Schools.

Abstract

This study examined the development of informational service materials aimed at enhancing the meaning of life among Minangkabau ethnic students in secondary schools. "Meaning of life" is a psychological concept referring to an individual's sense of purpose, significance, and life satisfaction. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, and data analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results indicate that the developed informational service materials are valid in terms of content and design, practical, and effective in improving the students' meaning of life. These materials were tested on a small group using a limited trial method, which demonstrated an increase in the meaning of life before and after the informational service was provided. The implications of this study suggest that the use of informational services to enhance the meaning of life can be effectively applied to students, as it has a positive psychological impact.

Abstract

The Batak Toba family adheres to a patrilineal family system, where couples are expected to have sons to continue the clan. Batak parents who do not have sons often feel stressed, anxious and depressed. This research aims to examine the influence of gratitude and social support on the psychological well-being of Batak Toba parents who do not have sons. A total of 50 Batak Toba fathers and mothers who did not have sons were the research sample. Data collection was carried out through online and offline questionnaires. This research uses quantitative methods with a correlation design, and data analysis uses multiple linear analysis with SPSS 22. The findings of this research show that gratitude has a positive effect on the psychological well-being of Batak Toba parents who do not have sons, this result strengthens existing literature. These results can also encourage policies to create mental health services and social programs that support them and reduce the stigma against Batak parents who do not have sons.

Abstract

The increase in overweight and obesity in Indonesia, along with its negative impact on individual health, such as the risk of chronic diseases and reduced life expectancy, cannot be separated from unhealthy food choices. Unhealthy food choices can negatively impact health, including increasing the risk of overweight and obesity. The aim of this study is to investigate potential differences in the impact of positive message framing on healthy eating behavior. The sample of this study involved student participants aged 18-24 years. This study used an experimental design. In this study, participants were divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group was given positive framing messages, while the control group did not receive any framing messages. Participants conducted a shopping simulation in a virtual supermarket using virtual reality devices. After that, the participants' food choices and shopping scores were analyzed. The results of this study show a significant difference in food choices between participants given positive health cues framing and those who were not. This means that participants in the experimental group who received positive framing messages had healthier food choices than the control group. The use of positive framing strategies, such as through posters, can be effective in promoting healthy eating behavior. The implications of this study provide insights to the community that positive framing messages can be an influential way to encourage healthy eating behavior among the publicKeywords: positive framing; food choice; positive framing messages; healthy food choices.
