Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate: (1) how students' mathematical dispositions differ depending on whether they were taught using a Problem-Based Learning model or an Ordinary Learning model; (2) how the mathematical dispositions of students are affected by the relationship between the learning style and Previous Students' Ability. This study is a quantitative investigation employing procedures that are semi experimental. The instruments of this research are problem solving ability tests and student disposition questionnaires. The participants in this research project are all 222 students enrolled in class VIII at SMP Negeri 5 Stabat during the academic year 2022/2023. There are a total of 222 individuals. The method of sampling utilized for this investigation was a straightforward random sampling method, and the total number of students comprising the sample was calculated using the Issac and Michael formula. Essay examinations and questionnaires were the research tools that were utilized in this investigation. A Two Way ANOVA was utilized in the analysis of the results. The findings of the research indicate the following: (1) the mathematical disposition of students in the class that uses problem-based learning is higher than that of students in the class that uses ordinary learning; (2) there is no interaction between the learning model and early mathematical abilities (high, medium, and low) on students' mathematical dispositions. Keywords: Problem Based Learning, Quasi Experiment, Mathematical Dispositions

Abstract

This study aims to determine students' mathematical abstraction ability, answer process and difficulties faced by students in solving derivative problems. The subjects in this study were 11th grade students of SMA SWASTA AN - NIZAM Medan who were taught with the application of PBL model and scientific approach. The instrument in this study is a formative test used to see the level of mathematical abstraction ability and the answer process given by students. The difficulties faced by students in the process of solving the problems given can be known through the interview process conducted and documented through cell phones. Of the 19 students who took the math abstraction ability test, 4 students had high category math abstraction ability (21%). 11 students have medium category math abstraction ability (58%), and 4 students have low category math abstraction ability (21%). Of the 4 problems given, for the recognition stage, problem no 1 can be solved by all students. problem no 2 can be solved by 17 students, problem no 3 can be solved by 12 students and problem no 4 can be solved by 8 students. The decline also occurred at the representation and structural abstraction stages. After being analyzed based on the process of answers given by students and the results of interviews conducted, the decline was caused by: 1. the level of difficulty of the problem, 2. learning experience, 3. reasoning power and 4. literacy skills of each different student.. In this research, the media used to help the research process is geogebra. The use of this media is only limited to how to solve the problems given in other ways besides the concepts taught at school. Keywords: Qualitative Research Analysis; Mathematical Abstraction Ability; Problem Based Learning Model

Abstract

This research aims: (1) to determine whether problem-based learning models improve mathematical problem-solving abilities and self-efficacy; (2) to explore the interaction between students' initial mathematical abilities and the learning model. The study employed a quasi-experimental quantitative design, with ANOVA used for inferential data analysis. Fifty eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 3 Aek Kuo in the academic year 2022/2023 were examined. The null hypothesis (H0) was accepted, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected since the significant F-test value was 0.178 > 0.05, and the T-test value was 0.692 > 0.05, indicating no significant difference in the average scores between experimental classes I and II. PBL students demonstrated better performance in answering mathematical problems compared to those in the direct learning group. Experimental class 1 achieved a mastery level of 84%, while experimental class 2 achieved a mastery level of 64%. PBL learners exhibited higher self-efficacy compared to those learning through direct instruction. Hypothesis testing indicated that students in experimental class 1 had stronger confidence in mathematical problem-solving compared to students in experimental class 2. The problem-based learning (PBL) methodology did not have a significant impact on students' mathematical problem-solving abilities. Hypothesis testing using interaction analysis yielded a significance value of 0.730 > 0.05. Both PBL and students' basic mathematical abilities influenced self-efficacy. Interaction analysis indicated a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05.Keywords: Problem based learning, early math skills, math solving, self efficacy
