Abstract

Abstrak. Translating is a hard work. It isnot only about finding the word of the source language (SL) having the samemeaning in the target language (TL). It talks about the message. Theword/phrase/sentence going to be translated is a text or it is called surfacestructure. A text needs context or known as deep structure which containsmessage. Therefore a word may have the same meaning either in SL or TL, butthey have different sense as they bring different message in different context.In this article, it is explored the mistranslation o the word “must”. Thisstudy observed 14 students who were learning English. They were asked totranslate a text entitled “The Mirror”. The analysis is focused on a paragraphconsisting of a word “must”. The result shows that the students are stillfocusing on the text or surface structure. They ignore the context or deepstructure. Thus, the message fails to be delivered.  Katakunci: translation, meaning, message,Source Language, Target Language.

Abstract.Communicative language teachingmerupakan salah satu metode pengajaran cukup efektif bila dilaksanakan secarasesuai. Karakteristik dan prinsipnya seperti kesesuaian penggunaan bahasatarget (bahasa Inggris), focus kepada pesan/ message, proses psikolinguistik,dan praketk bebas seperti halnya keahlian komunikasi, keahlian bahasa, dankompetensi interaksi sosialisasi diulas untuk mengukur kualitas metode dankemungkinan penggunaannya. Lebih jauh, keuntungan dan kelemahan metode inipundievaluasi sebagai sebuah parameter untuk meminimalkan resiko penggunaan metodeini. Abstract

Abstrak. Pembelajaran atau pemerolehan bahasakedua di dalam konteks bahasa asing seperti Bahasa Inggris merupakan perjalananyang sangat rumit. Kesuksesannya bergantung pada banyak aspek. Salah satunyaadalah pada keinginan pembelajar untuk berpartisiasi dalam interaksi yangmengharuskan mereka menggunakan bahasa yang mereka pelajari tersebut padasituasi-situasi yang tidak bisa diprediksikan keberhasilannya. Pembelajar yangbisa mengatasi situasi ini dan mengubahnya menjadi sebuah pencapaian dinamakansebagai pembelajar yang mau mengambil resiko (risk-taker). Namun, di kelas-kelasbahasa asing banyak ditemukan kondisi lemahnya partisipasi penggunaan bahasaasing/bahasa kedua (B2) baik di dalam dan luar kelas. Karenanya studi inibertujuan untuk mengetahui gambaran apa saja situasi-situasi yang pembelajarmaknai sebagai situasi yang tidak bisa diprediksi dan bagaimana mereka melihatsituasi-situasi ini sesungguhnya. Hasil studi menunjukkan bahwa resiko disindirguru/dosen, resiko ditolak, resiko diajak berbicara lebih lama denganmenggunakan B2, resiko nilai, dan resiko bertindak dan berkata tidak sopanadalah 5 situasi yang paling dianggap tidak bisa diprediksi. Lima hal inimenjadi sumber kegelisahan mereka yang pada akhirnya menjadikan mereka kurangaktif dalam menggunakan Bahasa Inggris baik di dalam maupun di luar kelas. Kata kunci:risk taking, second/ foreign language, optimum learning

Abstract. Meninggalkan metode ‘grammartranslation’ bukan berarti menghindari terjemah dalam pempelajaran di kelas.Kenyataan bahwa penggunaan bahasa lokal dalam pergaulan sehari-hari  (Madura dan Jawa) di lingkungan sekolah mempengaruhikeberhasilan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, terjemah langsung berdasarkan  equivalensi menjadi sangat penting. Olehkarena itu, aspek  lexico-cultural perludipertimbangkan dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini akanmerefleksi penggunaan equivalensi bahasa Inggris dengan bahasa lokal sepertipenggunaan frase dan bentuk-bentuk ‘chunks’ serta dampak dari penggunaanequivalensi Bahasa Inggris dengan bahasa lokal terhadap sikap siswa terhadapBahasa Inggris. 120 siswa kelas VII berpartisipasi dalam penelitian ini. Hasilpenelitian menunjukkan bahwa beberapa unit leksikal digunakan untukmenjembatani kesenjangan ’ lexico-cultural’. Dalam penelitian ini juga  ditemukan bahwa rasa percaya diri siswameningkat sehingga mendorong siswa untuk menggunakan Bahasa Inggris di luarkelas melalui ‘code-mixing’ dengan nyaman. .  Key Words: Lexico-Cultural, Equivalence,translation,  attitude

Abstract. In implementing competence based curriculum it needssupport of resources, one of them is laboratory equipment. Mechanicalengineering students should understand how the engine run, what its componentsand how is ignition work. Theoretical study could not make them fullyunderstood, whereas to mount and dismount an engine block is time consuming andcostly.  The moderate way to understandthem is by observing a model of gasoline engine. The project aim is to designand to manufacture a used 4-stroke block engine motorcycle being a model.Design considerate that the model should able to show how is an engine works,how the work of ignition, and what are components of transmission.Manufacturing consideration is that the engine block should not machine thebearing and supporting posts. Manufacturing of engine block was carried out atmachining laboratory by an-5mm end mill. Assembling the component to themachined block shows that the model can fulfill the requirements. Keywords:  model, 4-strokes gasoline engine

Abstract

Abstrak : Menyongsongera globalisasi dan perdagangan bebas dewasa ini dimana persaingan antarperusahaan semakin ketat maka PT. Telkom sebagai perusahaan yang bergerakdibidang jasa telekomunikasi berupaya untuk meningkatkan kualitas jasanya.Dalam usahanya untuk meningkatkan kualitas jasa maka perlu diadakan suatupenelitian tentang tingkat kepuasan konsumen pengguna jasa telekomunikasiTelkomFlexi area Jember dibidang bauran pemasaran dan kualitas pelayananterhadap kualitas jasa yang telah diberikan kepada konsumen selama ini. Metodeanalisis yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah dengan Metode AnalisisStatistik Inferensial untuk menguji pengaruh antara variable bebas terhadapveriabel tergantung dan menguji hipotesis yang diajukan. Teknik pengujianhipotesis dilakukan dengan menggunakan analisis regresi linier berganda untukmengetahui pengaruh kepuasan pelanggan TelkomFlexi area Jember. Hasil analisismenunjukkan bahwa fungsi regresi linear berganda yang dapat menjelaskanpengaruh variabel harga (X1), produk (X2), distribusi (X3),  promosi (X4), keandalan (X5),daya tanggap (X6), keyakinan (X7), dan empathy (X8)terhadap faktor kepuasan pelanggan (Y) adalah Y=0,01523 + 0,033 X1– 0,115 X2 +0,107 X3 + 0,466 X4 + 0,0697 X5 + 0,0113 X6 + 0,00263 X7 + 0,116 X8 + ei,sehingga disimpulkan bahwa variabel-variabel tersebut secara simultan mempunyaipengaruh yang signifikan terhadap kepuasan pelanggan TelkomFlexi Area Jember.  Kata kunci: Layanan, Telekomunikasi, Kepuasan Pelanggan, Regresi Linier

Abstract

Abstract. The need for upgrading the D3 Bahasa Inggris students’interest and writing ability leads to an idea to implement a teaching design inorder to supply entrepreneurship skill to them through Writing I course.Concerning with it, this research is aiming at: 1) improving and increasing thebetter motivation change and entrepreneurship skill as a means to solveproblems in teaching and learning activity of Writing I for students of thesecond semester of D3 Bahasa Inggris, 2) becoming one of strategic steps toundertake for improving education service wholly, and 3) becoming as a meansfor skill development for both lecturers and students which is based on theneed to solve problems of Writing I learning especially for students of D3Bahasa Inggris. The design of this research is Classroom Action Research due tothe fact that it is based on a situational problem, occurring at the time ofconducting Writing I teaching. Apart from what has been mentioned, the proposedteaching design is for improving the teaching and learning quality as well asimproving the students’ study result. The result of this research shows that 14from the total number 15 students (more or less 93%) assume that this methodhas efficiency and ‘power to assist’ in Writing I teaching and learning, thatis improving the students’ writing ability. Twelve to fourteen students(86-99%) said that this method has a capability to give learning motivation interms of an effective interaction between lecturers-students as well asaffective support needed by the students. It means that this teaching design isquite appropriate to use as an alternative method in supplying entrepreneurshipskill through its output that is writing skill ability.Key words: Entrepreneurship, wrting 1, storybook for children

Abstract. Need analysis for English for specificpurposes course is something very necessary. The benefits are for answering thequestions of needs which have been always specific for the learners themselves,and for the sake of make up purpose, that is to impress the students positivelythat the course is carried out seriously. The analysis is classified broadlyinto 3 categories; target situation analysis, learning analysis, and learneranalysis. Abstract

Abstract. Failure made by my students ofWriting 01 class in recognizing and using verbs in different functions equippedby their counterparts, that are auxiliaries, triggered me to compose particularmaterials of writing class: the basic level. This insight is mostly based onthe concept offered by Deterding and Poedjosoedarmo (2002) on verbs. This isthen supported by other concepts on verbs, combined together with my resume onhow to make ease students’ comprehension on verbs in relation to theimplementation of predicates,  in termsof verbal and nominal sentences as the core. I argue that these sequence ofmaterials with emphasis on verbs are beneficial, in a way that these will breakdown student’s failure on comprehending what parts of speech are, what verbs andtheir forms as well as their functions, how the verbs are applied in tenses,how to use other forms of verbs, i.e. have + past participle, to be + pastparticiple, and such. Yet, this insight is expected to contribute to theteaching learning activities, in particular, for the sake of implantingknowledge on verbs to students that help them in obtaining writing ability.  Keywords: writing,verbs, predicate, auxiliaries, linking verbs

Abstract

Abstrak. Almost a half of students of IX A classwere not able to develop ideas, thoughts, feelings, and information in the formof a review of science book. Most of them were having difficulties in writingsequentially. Students were even had no idea to write. They ended their writingwith two or three sentences as they were afraid of making mistakes and feltdoubtful. They also produced ambigous main ideas. The tacle these problems,“Baku Simpul Berbintang” is applied. It is an acronym for “membaca, diskusi, presentasi,kesimpulan, dan berburu bintang” (reading, discussion, presentation,conclusion, and hunting for stars). The purpose of this study is to developstudents’ learning acheivement of writing science book review through thestrategy used. It is expected that through the used strategy, students are moremotivated, creative, and have high enthusiasm in learning as the strategyemploys enjoyfull activity therefore in the last improving students scores.This study uses Classroom action resarch tmethod of research which is done intwo cycles. In the first cycle it is shown that 58 % percent of the students(21 students) obtain scores of above 77 meanwhile 42% (15 students) obtain lessthan score 77. This result is still considered underachieved so the cycle isrepeated in the second run. In this cycle 90 % of the total students obtainscore 77 and above, and only 10% (4 students) did not obtain the standard.  On the basis of this result, the study showsthat there is a significant improvement of students’ learning achievement forboth personal and classical improvement. It can be concluded that “Baku SampulBerbintang” can help to improve students’ skill and competence in writingscience book review.  Kata Kunci: menulis resensi, bakusimpul berbintang
