Abstract

Student-centered learning intends to increase student participation. Biology subject is a broad scope and has a level of abstract concepts. Active learning has the potential to maximize the learning process of biology subjects. The purpose of the research is to describe the implementation and strategies of active learning applied to biology learning in higher education. The method used descriptive and systematic review. Selecting articles used the ERIC database. The search was carried out with predetermined categories, then a manual selection of the article to ensure the selected one. There are nine journals with nineteen articles analyzed at the higher education level of biology subject matter. This study's results, the implementation of active learning strategies, require support from lecturers and university stakeholders so that active learning runs effectively. An Active learning strategy used in biology material in higher education consists of the use of low-cost technology (virtual cell learning module) to high cost (SCALE-UP, clicker), low-cost learning without involving technology (card games, card organisms, kinesthetic physical models, 5E lesson plan, and pre-class reading guide) to outside the classroom (field training). The university's role and the understanding of lecturers in implementing active learning strategies have a crucial role in determining student learning outcomes. Lecturers and university stakeholders need to build cooperation, including a learning policy system and classroom implementation.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop Predict-Observe-Explain (POE) strategy with refutation text based on Newton's Law. The research design used was 4D (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate). The participants consisted of 31 students (15 male students and 16 female students) with an age range of 15-16 years selected from the tenth grade of a public high school in Sukabumi, Indonesia. The instruments used were lesson plan validation sheets and a questionnaire containing 20 statements (11 positive and nine negative statements) with a Likert scale. The scores for positive statements move sequentially from four to one, while the scores for negative statements move sequentially from one to four. The analysis used in this study was the Rasch analysis. As a result, the lesson plan's codes for indicators have an unrevised assessment, while the Language, Concept, Strategy, Objective, and Time codes must be revised. The student responses indicated that all students did not agree with all negative statements, except for S26, S07, S28, and S01. Meanwhile, all students agreed to all positive statements given. Thus, it can be concluded that the POE strategy assisted by rebuttal text can better help students to understand Newton's Law material.

Abstract

Students’ argumentation ability is necessary for education today, which emphasizes the student-centered learning process. One way to see students’ argumentation ability is by having a discussion. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the Toulmin argumentation process for students during focus group discussions (FGD). This research is qualitative. The data collection instrument used was an open-ended questionnaire assisted by Google Form that contained common problems of the distance learning process during a pandemic. The subjects of this study consisted of fifty students from the University of Mataram. The results showed that the argumentation process was divided into three categories. The first category was the one-sentence argument. There were 58 %, or 29 students, who belonged in this category. The second category was the two sentences argument. There are 30 %, or 15 students belonged in this category. Lastly, 12 % or six students belonged to the more than three sentence argument category. The results of this study indicated that many students could not provide complete arguments. Thus, the role of lecturers is significant to improve students’ ability in providing complete argumentations. Therefore, the researchers suggest that lecturers should apply learning models that invite students to argue and discuss.

Abstract

The number of studies and researchers in the science education field is constantly increasing from year to year. It makes research about article review very important because it helps researchers determine the research orientation. In this study, a research review was conducted on reading activities in science learning. There have been several studies on tracking research trends in science education in recent years, but there has not been any detailed discussion about reading activities in science learning. Therefore, it is necessary to know the development trends of research on reading activities in science learning. In this study, we analyze 74 articles published from 2000-2019 using the open-coding system. By using a search engine, it is done by entering one keyword or a combination of several keywords, include reading, a variety of ”reading and text," ”reading and science text," ”reading and textbook," ”reading, text, and science." The results showed that there were still many empty things that the researchers had not studied. The United States dominates the average researcher with a primary focus on reading comprehension. In terms of participants, research is dominated by involving students in schools (although the numbers are still small), with the variables studied are dominated by reading comprehension. This research can help researchers find gaps in research that have not been carried out related to reading activities in science learning.
