This research was focused on analyzing the English Textbook, “Pathway to English”, which is published by Erlangga. The data was analyzed through data analysis table to categorize the activity with defined as any one of the following: a question or instructional activity, based on cognitive dimension. The result showed that there are 271 activities in the textbook. The activities spread over 105 (38.7%) remembering, 76 (28%) understanding, 48 (17.7%) applying, 28 (10.3%) analyzing, 7 (2.6%) evaluating, and 7 (2.6%) creating. The total number of activities that included to HOTS are 42 activities or 15.5% and the activities that included to LOTS are 229 activities or 84.5%. The most dominant activity was remembering which the lowest dimension of cognitive level of Revised Bloom Taxonomy. Then, the number of LOTS and HOTS activities in each chapter are very different. Hence, it is not enough if the teacher just only uses the English textbook as a teaching tool to improve students HOTS ability.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the frequency and process of derivational and inflectional morphemes in Joko Widodo's speech at the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. The study used descriptive qualitative analysis methods. The data were analyzed using Fromkin's principle. The data analysis yielded 133 terms made up of derivational and inflectional morphemes. Derivational morphemes accounted for 50.37 percent of all occurrences in this study, while inflectional morphemes accounted for 49.63 percent. The researchers discovered several derivation processes that modify grammatical classes while remaining unchanged, such as noun form, adjective form, verb form, adverb form, adjective form, noun to noun, and adjective to adjective. In this study, five types of Inflectional morphemes were found: -s (plural and third-person singular), -ing (progressive), -ed (past tense), and -er (comparative).  Morphemes are an important feature of language so it is important for students to learn in school, especially for language learners. Morphological awareness, which we describe as a basic understanding of the morphemic structure of words, is required of the learner. Finally, the implications of this research will be an inspiration for further research in morphological processing, especially regarding derivational and inflectional morphemes.

Abstract

Based on this background, the authors are interested in examining more deeply with research questions, namely why book authors tend to take source culture as material and what are real examples of cultural values reflected in textbooks. The research method used in this study is a qualitative research method with the type of library research. Thus the data collection method used is observation. Observations were made on three journals that have been selected as data for analysis, namely analysis of the cultural content of third grade English textbooks in Cianjur, West Java, Cultural content in Indonesian case English teaching textbooks (ELT), Analysis of cultural content in Pathway textbooks. to English for the second grade of high school. The theory used as an analytical knife is the theory of Cortazzi and Jin (1999) which examines culture. The results of the analysis show that there is a tendency for the authors to choose local culture as a teaching material, as evidenced by 13.11% in Faris journal, 45% in Kurnia journal and 19% in Nurjannah journal who choose source culture as teaching material. The reason the author chooses source culture as source material is because the material is easily understood by the participants of the source culture, the source culture is easily found in real terms, the delivery of the source culture can help preserve the culture itself so that it does not become extinct, the source culture material can broaden students' horizons because of its diversity in Indonesia.Source cultural materials can indirectly foster nature and mutual respect for cultural differences between one another.

Abstract

Political discourse on the 2019 Indonesian presidential election has been studied from a variety of linguistic viewpoints.  However, the  pros and cons discourse on  Joko Widodo's coalition with Prabowo in spite of their rivalry has not been examined through  critical discourse analysis.  This study aims to explore the text structure, social cognition, and social context of the pros dan cons discourse as the theme of Mata Najwa talk show. This is a kind of qualitative analytical research using van Dijk’s (1996, 2015) critical discourse analysis framework. The data comprised utterances of the talk show participants examined through three levels of analysis: description of text structure, interpretation of social cognition, and explanation of social context. The study found the use of macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure as textual elements that support the discourse theme. Meanwhile, the theme selection is influenced by the host’s ideology that serves the theme's pro-coalition stance. The social context underlying the discourse production is the representation of  Joko Widodo, who utilized his power to forge a coalition with the opponents through political bargaining. The implication of this study is to increase public awareness on the importance of critically viewing political news so that the negative excesses of political propaganda do not easily provoke them through mass media.

Abstract

The key in language learning and acquisition is exposure towards said language. The most feasible exposure for English learners in the EFL setting is reading due to practicality, continuity, and suitable sources. Their reading success depends on their attitude, motivation, and habit. This research sought to determine the state of learners’ attitude, motivation, and habit toward reading in English. This qualitative exploratory research was initiated in 2020, taking place at the State Islamic University of Raden Intan Lampung (UIN RIL) and the Indonesian State Maritime Polytechnic (Polimarin). The research population included learners registered in those two universities, with 88 (51.8%) from UIN RIL and 82 (48.2%) from Polimarin selected through quota sampling. A 20 items-questionnaire, complemented by some interview sessions, were used to collect the research data. The collected data were then processed through a model consisting of four stages; data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results revealed that the learners showed a generally favourable attitude toward reading in English. This stemmed from good responses shown from all factors of English reading attitude. It should be noted that the previous reading experience factor was the most unfavourable one due to poor start of reading activity. Meanwhile, the learners showed mixed responses regarding their motivation toward reading in English. Two factors, access to materials and English proficiency, were the ones that need further attention, as most learners still lacked in that regard. Ultimately, the learners’ reading habits were still deficient in their native language and even more so in their English reading habits. Keywords: Attitude, Habit, Motivation, Reading, Second Language.
