Abstract

Many people are still struggling to cope with gender equality in all aspects of life. There is hope for a balanced role for men and women to participate in any industry. The gender balance today seems to be that both men and women have equal possibilities to present, attend classes, work, and take part in other positive activities. Above and beyond, gender equality can be introduced at a young age by bringing up the roles of men and women in a balanced way of contributing to daily activities, as demonstrated in coursebooks. The excellent coursebook should illustrate the way men and women interact in society based on their roles, position, surroundings, culture, and community structures that are portrayed throughout the form of images and sentence descriptions in a balanced way. However, the current English coursebook with an Indonesian setting has not been able to fulfill gender equality. At this point, the researchers conducted a study to look into various aspects of gender awareness in the Cambridge Global English Coursebook 8 Grades. This study employs qualitative research using content analysis. The data of this study was derived from the content of Cambridge Global English Coursebook 8 Grades, which depicts gender relations. The content was categorized into visibility, jobs, games, household duties, and the data, consisting of pictures and texts from the coursebook. The data of this study was obtained through document analysis. This study showed gender awareness in Cambridge Global English Coursebook 8 Grades. The data were presented as follows: a) There were 113 men and 45 women in the visibility aspects b) There were 17 men and 9 women in the job aspects c) There were 27 men and 10 women in the games or sports aspects d) There were three men and 0 woman in the household duties aspect. Based on the findings, gender stereotypes still exist in the Cambridge Global English Coursebook 8 Grades.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the level of foreign language anxiety (FLA) experienced by senior-high-school English language learners (ELLs) and to explore plausible factors that contribute to the learners’ anxiety. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a case study approach, involving thirty-four twelfth-grade ELLs from SMA 4 Banda Aceh, Indonesia, as participants. In gathering the data, Horwitz et al.'s (1986) Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety Scale (FLCAS) and semi-structured interview were used as instruments. The findings revealed that the majority of the ELLs were at a moderate level of anxiety, with more than half of them being at “Mildly Anxious” level and with no “Very Anxious” learners. The findings also indicated that the ELLs’ FLA was caused not only by teacher factors but also student factors. The teacher factors include oral presentation task, incomprehensible input, and teachers’ attitude, while student factors comprise learners’ fear of being laughed at, their’ beliefs about L2, and lack of preparation.

Abstract

Method section of research articles defined as a crucial part among several sections. This study employed an analytical framework of method sections by adopting from Zhang and Wannaruk (2016) adjusting from Pho's (2008a). There were 15 research articles published in International Journal and 15 others published in Cambodian National Journal selected as the sample for the study. Three vital research questions were established to investigate this analysis comprising (1) to find out on moves structure in Method sections of RAs written by Cambodian authors published in national journal; (2) the same moves structure in Method section of RAs published in international journals; and (3) the differences of both move structure in Method sections of RAs in national and international journals. Three moves in method section were used in the study such as: Move1 on Describing Research Design; Move2 on Describing Data Collection procedures; and Move3 on Describing Data Analysis. The results stated that all these three moves were found as conventional moves in International Journal while optional moves were found in National Journal. Almost the same results on steps in move2 from the analysis except step2 which was found as obligatory in the International Journal. One step in move3 and five steps in move2 were found as the same status. There were only three optional steps found in International while there were five steps and three moves were found as optional steps and moves. This analysis suggested that Cambodian National Journal should provide clear distinction in writing method sections by introducing specific model of moves and steps to write a qualify method for a research. Future researcher should study rhetorical analysis of move structure in method section in the same filed but the samples should be selected from new published research articles and increased the number of research articles for the analysis.

Abstract

Multimodality has been studied in relation to a variety of text genres, but it has yet to be used to textbook covers. This paper is aimed at examining the representational meaning of visual resources in the covers of selected English textbooks and how the verbal and visual modes strengthen each other’s meaning. This is a qualitative research that uses a multimodal discourse analysis paradigm. Visual and verbal data were gained from two covers of selected English textbooks. The analysis includes representational meaning (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2006), text generic structure (Cheong, 2004),  and intersemiotic complementarity (Royce, 2007). The findings indicate that the representational meaning consists of  narrative and conceptual representations within the structures of   lead, display, announcement and emblem. Through the relationships of repetition, synonymy, and meronymy, verbal and visual modes help each other build cohesiveness. The cohesion signifies the relation between visual images and  verbal texts to convey meaningful messages of the covers. Certain implications were also elaborated in this study.
