Abstract

Passivization is the grammatical process in which the structures of the whole sentence, and specifically the verb phrase, change. This process is one of the main syntactic needs in any academic writing. Therefore, any English learner needs to know enough about it by the end of undergraduate studies. This paper, being an empirical one, tests Kurdish learners’ awareness of the process by providing an instrument. The data and the scope of the study are sentences from English and Kurdish. A cohort of eightyeight senior students in the English departments in Iraqi Kurdistan universities were selected randomly to participate in the study. As for the Kurdish variety, the Central Kurdish has been chosen which is spoken in Erbil and Sulaymania. On this basis, the setting of the research incudes only the universities situated in this geographical area. A mixed method has been adopted in doing the paper. The aim of the study is to indicate and compare the learners’ awareness in passivizing and recognizing certain sentence structures in both languages. One of the main conclusions of the study is that there is a positive correlation between the EFL learners’ awareness in English and Central Kurdish (CK) in relation to passivization.

Abstract

Grammar has an important role to build a communication process, it is used to make a clear statement about the time of a verb occurs. This research is aimed to find out grammatical errors in terms of tense, active, and passive voice abstracts in translation of abtracts from Indonesian language to English produced by Google Translate. Descriptive qualitative method was used as the research method in this research. The population of this study was twenty abstracts that were taken from the University of Bengkulu’s Repository. The instruments that was used to collect the data were documentations and checklists. Keshavarzʼs (1999) theory was applied to analyze the data. From the data analysis it was found that tense was the most dominant error produced by Google Translate. Meanwhile, the active and passive voices error were rarely found. It can be inferred that as a tool, Google Translate cannot identify the tense of the sentences being translated. This is possible because tenses are closely related to the context of which the time a verb in a sentence happens, which can only be analyzed and understood by humans

Abstract

Reading skills and vocabulary mastery are crucial aspects in language learning. In recent years, digital media such as Webtoon have become a popular alternative to improve reading comprehension and enrich students' vocabulary. Although the use of Webtoon is increasingly widespread, research examining its effectiveness as a learning medium is still relatively limited. Therefore, this study aims to analyze students' perceptions of the Webtoon application as a means of reading to improve their vocabulary. The method used in this study was a qualitative approach, involving interviews with teachers and students of grade VIII MTs An Nasuriyah. The results of the study revealed that Webtoon succeeded in increasing students' interest in reading. The combination of visual and text elements in Webtoon helps students understand new words in a clearer context, making it easier for them to remember vocabulary. However, there are several challenges faced, such as the gap in access to digital devices and the tendency of students to focus more on images than text. Teachers recognize the potential of Webtoon as a learning medium, but emphasize the need for guidance so that the use of this media is more focused and effective. Overall, this study concludes that Webtoon can function as an effective tool in vocabulary learning, especially when combined with conventional learning methods. Therefore, it is recommended to conduct further research to explore optimal strategies in utilizing digital comics in language learning and find solutions to overcome obstacles to technology access, so that the benefits can be felt by all students.
