Abstract

The introduction of work from home policies, intended to reduce the spread of COVID-19, has added to women's burden and reinforced their domestic roles. This article seeks to show that the ongoing pandemic, which has resulted in families being confined to home, has been used to justify the creation of new burdens for women. To support this argument, this article relies on data collected through two methods: mapping online resources and interviews. Trends identified in online sources were confirmed through interviews with 22 women, as well as a focus group discussion with women leaders. This article shows that women have become responsible for more domestic duties during the pandemic, and their burdens have increased as a result. They are expected not only to handle domestic labor and childcare, but also to act as teachers. To achieve a deeper understanding, this article recommends using participant observation and in-depth interviews to obtain a broader understanding of women's experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Mainstream Islamic epistemologies are gender biased due to two primary reasons. First, women are often seen as men’s sexual tools and reproductive machinery, making them sexual objects. Second, legalistic interpretations of the Qur’an require formal interpretation. The Indonesian Women Ulama Congress (KUPI) proposes an alternative Qur'anic women's Hakiki Justice interpretation. In this context, women are respected as whole persons with physical, intellectual, and spiritual qualities deserving of respect as complete subjects. Islamic welfare ideals are shaped by their unique bodily and social human experiences. Islamic teaching system consists of vision, moral foundation, and method verses. As a process of transformation, the verses comprise the starting point, intermediate, and final goals verses. KUPI’s fatwas are examined for Qur'anic women's hakiki justice interpretation. The library research method is employed using credible books and online resources. The key texts are Nalar Kritis Muslimah, Metodologi Fatwa KUPI books, and KUPI's fatwas documents on the Kupipedia website. The results highlight that the traces of Qur'anic women's hakiki justice interpretation in KUPI's fatwas are indicated by how KUPI integrated women's bodily and social experiences in understanding the issues and the Qur'an.

Abstract

Type the Arab Springs and the rise of Daesh in Syria and Iraq gave the niqabi women a   special stand and visibility they never had before. Some niqabis women became visible sharing during the demonstrations calling for justice and social changes, others who believe in the Salafi jihadi trend were intensely mediatised due to their implication, next to Daesh, in tortures and bomb attacks. The civil societies in Egypt and Indonesia started to shape new calls to ban niqâb and presented it as a danger for the country. In both countries’ controversy has raised among Islamic mass organizations and universities. The Salafi doctrine which control women to cover the body including the face have increased in Egypt by the 70’ and in Indonesia during the 90’. It has entailed deep socio-religious norms’ transformations in both countries, with different impacts. This research focuses on how niqabis negotiate their modern identities in Indonesia and Egypt. It employs mixed method and uses surveys, in-depth interview (life stories), and focus group discussion. This paper would like to expose some results of those investigations happened in Indonesia and Egypt from June to November 2018.

Abstract

This article examines the structural challenges in the formation of advocacy policies for female victims of sexual violence in Gampong Meurandeh, Langsa City, Aceh. The data collection process utilized the participatory action research method over four months. Drawing upon social structure theory, the article argues that the causes of sexual violence in rural communities are not only rooted in knowledge and culture but also in the social structures that operate within these communities. The research findings indicate that the reluctance of village authorities to engage in the formulation of sexual violence policies is impeding the successful execution of sexual violence prevention programs. The article highlights two factors that hinder the prevention of sexual violence in Gampong Meurandeh Dayah. Firstly, the lack of female representation in the village government Secondly, support for victims of sexual violence is not a primary concern in the village government's policies. The article concludes that sexual violence prevention programs implemented in patriarchal communities require not only a change in public knowledge but also interventions at the structural level.

Abstract

This paper aims to explain the phenomenon of dagelan dalang and sinden in Yogyakarta's shadow puppet limbukan scene. Dagelan in Wayang is a humor/joke show to entertain the audience, usually done by dalang with sinden. For some people, dagelan is commonplace because it is generally presented in limbukan scenes for entertainment. However, dagelan in the limbukan section is not just entertainment but causes symbolic exploitation of sinden by the puppeteer with his various practices. Of course, this phenomenon is very paradoxical; on the one hand, the existence of sinden is significant because it supports the success of the shadow puppet show last night, but on the other hand, sinden becomes a victim of ridicule/laughter in a helpless condition because it is dominated and controlled by the puppeteer. The audience and group members even confirmed this dominance. In limbukan scenes, a sinden follows the puppeteer's instructions to sing a song while standing up and dancing. In addition, sinden is also the object of entertainment and even mockery of the mastermind with verbal and nonverbal language that causes discomfort. This is symbolic violence because sinden is a victim of entertainment exploitation. The conclusion shows that the extended exploitation of the mastermind against the sinden in the limbukan scene occurred because of the position of the sinden in a weak place in the ownership of capital compared to the mastermind. Sinden, however, is a part of the domination by the mastermind. On the contrary, puppeteers have various capital to become the dominant class with dominance and power. This leads to symbolic violence by the mastermind against Sinden and can even lead to mental violence.
