Abstract

The article discusses the history of madrasa in the Southern Province of Thailand. The Muslim Malay community in Southern Thailand is an inseparable part of the Republic of Thailand. Historically, the Muslim Malay community are indigenous people who have embraced Islam since the 13th century, and even reachedits peak of glory during the reign of Pattani Sultanate. The discussion specializes in the history of madrasa in the region. The study uses historical approach. The article illustrates that the beginning of the emergence of madrasa was motivated by the disagreement among Muslim Malay community against Thai governmental policies. Haji Sulong was the founder of the first madrasa in Southern Thailand in 1933 named “Madrasah Al-Ma’arif Al-Watattaniah Fattani” as a manifestation of his intention to improve the socio-economic welfare of Muslim Malay community through education. Finally, the article discusses the institutional dynamics of Muslim minority madrasa and the development in relation to the identity and capacity of community.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the implementation of teacher competence, the practice of Islamic teaching, supporting and inhibiting factors of the implementation of teacher competence policy. The research used qualitative approach, and was conducted at MAN (Madrasah Aliyah Negeri/Islamic Senior High School) 1 Bandung, MAN Cipasung Tasikmalaya, and MAN Ciwaringin Cirebon. The data were collected through observations, interviews, documents, and questionnaires. The study found that the implementation of a policy in Islamic schools model had been running effectively.  The teachers’ competence had complied professionalism standard. The practice of Islamic teaching had described the dimension of religious practices dynamically and systematically. The supporting factors consisted of a qualified manpower, adequate structures and infrastructures, the atmospheres of excellent academic and spirituality, and the support from all elements of madrasa. The implication of the policy implementation of teacher competence in cultivating the practice of religious teaching in madrasas contributed to the improvement of madrasa quality, teacher competence and performance, and students’ good deed and achievement.

Abstract

This study was aimed at describing Arabic language teaching which is based on gender perspective at Pesantren Darunnajah Jakarta. Method applied to describe data was inferential descriptive. This method was used to describe, and organize systematically Arabic language teaching at Darunnajah then it drew conclusion based on the data gathered. The findings showed that Arabic language textbook had no material indicating gender bias. The involvement of male and female student in Arabic language material had no bias gender issues. However there was a little content og gender bias when dealing with activities and role of women either visually or textually. Textbook written by D. Hidayat featured: content on text concerning Muhammad SAW history,  Siti Khadijah role and Indonesian women activities in the country.

Abstract

This paper investigated analysis of supplementary reading material development using a genre-based approach which is in line with the school curriculum. It employed the procedures: need analysis, supplementary materials development, expert validation, material revision, material testing, and subsequent material revision. The data were collected by using questionnaires, interview, syllabus analysis, and field note. The analysis shows that the supplementary reading materials entitled Reading for Islamic Learners were completely developed. The supplementary reading materials were developed on student’s need and school recommendation, in line with standard competence and basic competence from syllabus. They contain interesting reading passages featuring Islamic messages, delivered through colorful pictures. In addition they have various reading strategies and accompanied by  evaluation tools covering: multiple choice and essay.

Abstract

This paper aims to identify the financing management in a pesantren in Tasikmalaya, Indonesia. The study employed a qualitative approach employing a case study. The data collection techniques used in this study were in-depth interview, observation, and literature study. The research was conducted at Pesantren Tarekat al-Idrisiyyah Tasikmalaya, West Java, Indonesia and it found several findings: First, the source of financing came from the santri (pesantren students), government grant, social donation and auction from jamaah (communities), and pesantren business unit. Second, the financing plan of pesantren was prepared and established in the form of RKP (Rapat Kerja Pesantren/Pesantren Budget Plan) through Rakernas (Rapat Kerja Nasional/National Summit). Third, the implementation of financing included the receipt and expenditure of funds record. Fourth, evaluation and financial accountability took place as reflection of good financial management. When financing management was done professionally in spending salaries, benefits, and purchase of infrastructure improvement, the impacts led to pesantren achievements both in academic and non-academic fields.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the roles of PAI (Pendidikan Agama Islam/Islamic Education) at multicultural schools. It was the results of the field research by using a qualitative method. The research was conducted at SMA (Sekolah Menengah Atas/Senior High School) Plus Pembangunan Jaya Bintaro Tangerang. The school was selected because its students had diversity of backgrounds, and the school had committed to develop the multicultural insights. Data of research were obtained through interview, observation, and documentation. The results showed that PAI had the roles as the pluralism moral activator to students. PAI was applied in the educational process to form students’ multicultural attitude and thought. There were two underlying findings, namely: type of inclusive educators and design of multicultural curriculum.

Abstract

Since the government has more powers and authorities and bigger sources in enforcing its powers, it seems dominant in producing policies on MD that favor its political interest. This study was aimed at investigating the educational policies on MD before and after the Law No. 4 of 1950 Jo No. 12 of 1954, the educational policies of the MD Act No. 2 Year 1989, and the educational policies of the MD under law No. 20 Year 2003. In addition, it also examined the government's policies on MD in Indonesia from the beginning of independence day (1945) to  (2017). The method used was descriptive qualitative including steps of collecting data, classifying the data, interpreting and presenting the data. This study found that the educational policies on MD were not made by the government to prioritize MD in national education system. The policies on MD education covering before and after the Law of education and teaching No. 4 1950 Jo No. 12 Year 1954, UUSPN No. 2 Year 1989, and UUSPN No. 20 Year 2003, has not supported MD as an integral part in the provision of national education system in Indonesia. They have favored the interests of central government so that they have caused the difficulties in its implementation by the public at the local level.

Abstract

This article explores the challenge faced by Indonesia in ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) era. It is also revealed the Private Islamic Religion Institution (PTKIS) strategic to play its role and function in generating human resource. The method used is qualitative in the form of literature study. The result shows that PTKIS are required to adapt and see the AEC as an opportunity to change. A private status should be used as an institutional capital to create and innovate freely, by maximally utilizing the available resources. The management of a reputable institution is seen to be a significant factor for reinforcement. Aspects of visionary leadership, qualified lecturers, a curriculum that is responsive to a change, and an adequate infrastructure become a strengthening point toward the management accountability of universities in creating graduates who are competitive, skillful and qualified.

Abstract

In the pre-colonial Hausaland, an Islam-based educational system existed for several centuries and had produced leaders, scholars, businessmen, government functionaries, etc. This paper taking Kano as its focus of attention, and generating data through personal discussions, interviews, document analysis and personal experience, examines the Tsangaya system with the aim of bringing light into its untold beautiful features which are from a leaf that could be borrowed and successfully used in the so-called formal system. The paper reveals that the Tsangaya had staged from elementary to advanced and had its distinct of pedagogy and at the top of which there is educational delivery. Some benefits of the Tsangaya found in this study such as the strong relationship between teacher and student, respect for knowledge either for students or teacher, blending activities between teaching and learning and daily morality that can be useful for the modern era.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the pedagogical competence of PAI (Pendidikan Agama Islam/ Islamic education) teachers, the school’s strategies to develop PAI teacher’s pedagogical competence, the factors that inhibit school strategies, and the evaluation conducted by SMAN 3 (Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri /Senior High School) 3 Tasikmalaya, Indonesia toward the implementation of the strategies. The research method used is qualitative descriptive which reveals phenomenon holistically and contextually. Data were collected by observation, interview, and documentation. Qualitative descriptive data were analyzed by arranging and classifying the data, thus providing a real picture to the reader. The study conclude that the teachers had already good pedagogical competence, like the ability to understand the diversity of learners, to prepare lesson plans and strategies, to create active, creative, effective, and fun learning, and to evaluate students’ learning outcomes.  The school had employed strategy to develop PAI teacher’s pedagogical competence such as developing teachers regularly every month, involving teachers in various scientific activities, improving the welfare of teachers and educational facilities, supervising, monitoring and evaluating the performance of teachers by providing guidance, giving rewards to outstanding teachers. Thus, the factors inhibited the teachers’ pedagogical competence development were two kinds, internal and external factor.
