Abstract

In today’s digital era, technology plays an increasingly vital role in language learning, particularly for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners who often struggle with conventional classroom methods. This study explores the effectiveness of the English Breaking application in enhancing vocabulary acquisition among EFL students. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were gathered from in-depth interviews with university students in Medan who used the app for one month. The findings indicate that English Breaking positively influenced learners' vocabulary development, motivation, and engagement through its interactive flashcards, adaptive pronunciation tools, and gamified learning features. However, users also reported technical challenges, such as unstable internet requirements and unclear navigation. Despite these issues, the app's capacity to support personalized and autonomous learning proves promising. The study underscores the app’s potential as a supplementary language learning tool and calls for improvements in technical performance and social interactivity features. These findings hold significant implications for educational app developers, language educators, and policymakers aiming to optimize digital learning environments for EFL contexts.

Abstract

The involvement of social media in people’s life marks the beginning of the Industrial Revolution 5.0. The abundance of post in social media can creat a public image of a certain professional. It also includes the creation of public image of a teacher. Teachers as a part of society also upload pictures and videos, but apparently they consider their job as to create a certain perception about themselves in front of the society. This study aims to examine the language used on teachers’ social media accounts in relation to face saving theory and politeness strategy. The data was gatherered from individuals who commented on these social media posts. The study involves two teachers who are actively engaged on social media platform. It employs a basic qualitative research approach, with data collected through observation. Thematic analysis was applied to interpret the observed data. The result reveal that the teachers maintain a positive self image by showcasing their achievements, professional experiences, and personal lifestyles online. Meanwhile, their followers tend to use positive politeness strategies, such as expressing appreciation and highlighting similarities, to acknowledge and support the teachers’ positive self presentation. The finding of this study enrich the theory of the politeness strategy used by a teacher to create their public image. The perception of students toward teacher’s public image can affect how the learning process is achieved later on in practical way.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low descriptive text writing skills of seventh-grade junior high school students, which is caused by the use of conventional teaching methods and the lack of innovative learning media. This research aims to develop PBL-based LKPD on descriptive text material for seventh-grade students. The method used is research and development using the ADDIE model (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation). The research subjects were 25 students from class VII A at SMP Swasta IRA. The data collection techniques are observation, interviews, questionnaires, and tests. Data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively through expert validation, questionnaires, and N-gain tests. The research results indicate that the developed LKPD was deemed very feasible by material experts at 92%, media experts at 90%, and language experts at 97%. The practicality level of the LKPD also received very practical results, with teacher responses at 92% and student responses at 83.68%. Additionally, the effectiveness testing results showed an improvement in students' writing skills, with an average N-gain of 0.56 in the moderate category. This research shows that PBL-based LKPD can be an alternative teaching material that supports a more active and creative learning process. This research also contributes to the development of teaching media in language education, as well as opening opportunities for further research in the development of other interactive teaching materials on different subjects or levels.

Abstract

Makassar and Selayar languages are assumed to have a gap in kinship. Whereas, in reality, the two languages are not completely identical. The purpose of the study is to analyze Makassar and Selayar languages from the level of kinship and time of separation, influencing factors, and their limitations. The researcher usesmixed methods. Quantitative methods through lexicostatistics techniques and grotochronology techniques, while qualitative methods are used for data collection techniques using listening, recording, and recording techniques and interviews with informants. Primary sources in the form of MS speaker informants aged 60 years, DM aged 58 years, and aged 50 years, from these informants validated from secondary sources, namely the Swadesh vocabulary list and the Makassar and Selayar language dictionaries. Data analysis in this study by applying the steps that must be used in comparative historical research. The results of kinship 64.5% of the kinship level falls into the category of family language levels(family). Mean while, the results of calculating the separation time in centuries are included in the category of Language Dialect levels. (Dialect of language) because the separation time is 360 years in the 0-5 century classification. Factors that influence kinship such as origin and history, cultural influences, structural differences, language use and maintenance. Limitations require considerations such as language borrowing, careful analysis of cognates and consideration of historical language contact, as well as language change.

Abstract

The first public debate of the 2024 Riau gubernatorial election is a significant political and linguistic event, where candidates utilize the debate platform to construct political credibility through discursive strategies. This study aims to describe and analyze the forms of commissive illocutionary speech acts, particularly promises, used by candidates during the debate. The focus is on identifying verbal commitments as indicators of future policy intentions. This research employs a qualitative-descriptive approach, with the primary data sourced from a 1-hour-59-minute debate video broadcast by Kompas TV. Data were collected through documentation and transcription methods, and analyzed using Searle’s (1969) speech act theory, specifically the commissive category. The data analysis followed the Miles & Huberman model through stages of reduction, display, and verification. The findings reveal that commissive speech acts, especially promises, dominate the candidates' communication strategies and fall into three thematic domains: (1) infrastructure & technology development, (2) improving welfare & poverty alleviation, and (3) governance & education integrity. Candidates frequently employ futuristic verbs such as “will” and “intend” as rhetorical tools to establish public trust. This study contributes to the field of political pragmatics and language literacy, especially in the context of regional political debates. However, the study is limited by its focus on a single debate session, without examining post-election promise fulfillment. Future research is encouraged to explore the gap between political utterances and policy implementation.

Abstract

The Mars Pusat Ma’had al-Jâmi’ah song is a symbolic representation of the institutional identity of the Pusat Ma’had al-Jâmi’ah at the State Islamic University of Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. This song not only expresses institutional spirit but also illustrates a harmonious integration of Javanese cultural elements and Islamic religious values. This study aims to explore the religious values embedded in the song’s lyrics and uncover their implicit meanings using Riffaterre’s semiotic theory. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method with data collected through intensive reading and textual annotation. Analysis followed the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana model, involving data collection, condensation, display, and conclusion drawing. The results reveal that the song serves not only as an aesthetic expression but also as an ideological and educational medium. The matrix or underlying meaning lies in the Ma’had’s mission to nurture a Qur’anic generation. This is reflected through two dominant models: the development of Qur’anic character and the reinforcement of Islamic symbols (syi’ar Islam) in social contexts. Key religious values identified include unwavering faith, personal and social piety, and sincere devotion to Islamic teachings reflected in real-life actions. Additionally, the song acts as a medium for internalizing spiritual values and affirming the cultural and religious identity of pesantren-based education. The findings imply that institutional mars songs hold potential as effective instruments for character development and the transmission of Islamic values, particularly in strengthening the cultural-spiritual identity within Islamic educational institutions.

Abstract

Textbooks are an important component of BIPA learning. In this textbook, the use of language can reflect Indonesian nationalism. Indonesian nationalism must be introduced to BIPA 1 learners because BIPA 1 learners need to obtain initial schemata and perceptions about Indonesia. This study aims to reveal the representation of the Indonesian language and the construction of national identity in the BIPA 1 textbook: Sahabatku Indonesia through the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach modeled after Norman Fairclough. This textbook not only functions as a medium for language learning but also as an ideological tool that shapes the discourse of linguistic nationalism. This study uses a qualitative approach with data analysis of verbal and visual texts, and learning tasks in five main units. The data source in this study is the BIPA level 1 textbook. This book was chosen because it is the first learning material for foreigners who want to learn Indonesian, so it must represent Indonesian values. The data in this study are dialogues, texts, and practice questions. The results of the study show two major themes: (1) Indonesian is represented as a homogeneous and official national identity, and (2) language is used as an instrument of social regulation and power relations. This representation shows that Indonesians in the BIPA 1 textbook are not neutral but ideologically charged, reflecting linguistic nationalism and Indonesia's unique social value system. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that language is part of ideological construction, not merely a tool for communication. These results reinforce the notion that the BIPA 1 textbook can serve as a space for the production of discourse that constructs specific social identities.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the improvement of anecdotal text writing skills through the implementation of the Discovery Learning model assisted by the Canva application among ninth-grade students at SMPN 3 Luwuk Timur. The background of this research is based on the low ability of students to write anecdotal texts, which had not yet reached the minimum mastery standard, as well as the need for innovative learning approaches that can enhance students’ creativity and motivation. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach with a classroom action research (CAR) design conducted over two cycles. The subjects of this study were all ninth-grade students at the school, totaling 23 participants. Data collection was carried out through anecdotal writing performance tests administered at the end of each cycle. Quantitative data analysis involved calculating the percentage of completeness, class average scores, and improvement in learning outcomes between cycles. The evaluation results in Cycle I showed an average score of 69.34 with a completeness rate of 52.17%. After improvements in the learning process during Cycle II, there was a significant increase, with the average score reaching 90.91 and the completeness rate rising to 90.91%. The findings indicate that the application of the Discovery Learning model assisted by Canva effectively enhances students’ ability to write anecdotal texts. Observations and questionnaire results also revealed that students responded very positively to the learning process. This instructional model encouraged students to be more active and independent in their learning. The study reinforces the effectiveness of integrating constructivist learning models with digital media to improve students’ writing skills and recommends that teachers adopt the Discovery Learning approach assisted by Canva to foster active, creative, innovative, and independent writing instruction at various educational levels.

Abstract

Tundang art is a form of oral literature from the Malay community in West Kalimantan that contains educational, moral, religious, and cultural values passed down through generations. This study aims to reveal the structure and function of tundang art as a traditional educational medium within the Malay society, focusing on tundang verses themed around the 27th Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran (MTQ) of West Kalimantan Province. The research employs a structural and functional approach with a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected through documentation, transcription, and text analysis of 15 purposively selected tundang verses. The results show that structurally, the tundang verses have a consistent rhyme pattern (a-b-a-b), consist of four lines per stanza, each line containing 6–9 syllables, with a division between the sampiran (opening) and isi (content) reflecting the typology of Malay pantun. Functionally, tundang serves as a medium for moral education (instilling ethics and politeness), religious education (strengthening Islamic values), cultural education (preserving local customs and traditions), and entertainment (engaging through rhythm and wordplay). This study concludes that tundang not only functions as a performing art but also as a rich educational vehicle, making it highly potential for development in literature learning based on local wisdom.
