Abstract

Teachers need to encourage passive students to be more active during the teaching and learning process. One of the platforms that can be used to address this issue is Pear Deck due to its anonymous feature. This survey research was conducted to examine students' perceptions on the use of Pear Deck to learn English. The participants were 41 third-grade students in one of the junior high schools in Malang who had used Pear Deck in English learning in the class. The data were collected through a five-point Likert scale questionnaire. The findings revealed that the students perceived Pear Deck to be easily operated and beneficial to facilitate their English learning. Additionally, this platform also made them enjoy the process of learning English in the class, so they wanted to use it again for further learning. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers start using Pear Deck as the teaching platform and optimize the use of Pear Deck’s interactive slides to attract students' interest in learning English. Moreover, it is also suggested that future researchers examine teachers' perceptions on the use of Pear Deck as an interactive learning tool in teaching English

Abstract

In Indonesia, the government endorses EFL textbooks for schools, including Islamic Senior High Schools. However, as there is no specific textbook provided that aligns with the religious values needed in these schools, there is potential for a mismatch between the English material taught and the intended educational goals for Islamic Senior High Schools. For this reason, the present critical discourse study aims to investigate the representation of Islamic values in the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture-endorsed EFL textbook for Islamic Senior High Schools. The study examines the textbook's content and evaluates the extent to which it reflects Islamic values according to Indonesian cultural and religious norms. Through the analysis by adopting Martin & White’s (2005) language appraisal theory, Kress & Van Leeuwen’s (2020) visual grammar theory, this research seeks to identify any gaps and areas for improvement in the representation of Islamic values in the EFL textbook. This study will contribute to inform the development of EFL textbooks that align with cultural and religious values. Further studies on Islamic values among Indonesian ELT textbooks used in most Islamic schools are deemed necessary to promote more understanding about Islamic principles applied in ELT context. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, EFL Textbook, Islamic Values

Abstract

The urgency of this research is due to the problems being faced by Indonesia regarding the destruction of nature and the lack of human awareness of the relationship between humans and nature, which is an important factor behind the destruction of nature that is happening today. The author uses eco-ELT theory as an approach that integrates environmental issues into English language learning. The subject of this study is narrative text in the English textbook "English for Nusantara" for junior high school grade 9. This study requires the creation and implementation of an English textbook that employs the Eco-ELT approach and qualitative methods. According to the findings of this study, natural disasters, shelter, animals, and the earth can all be used to depict the environment. The English textbook "English for Nusantara" contains materials relevant to the Eco-ELT program, which is aligned with five types of interventions: material, experiential, cognitive, and emotional, all of which conceptualize the relationship between humans and nature.
