Abstract

This study discusses the tradition of Ngababali at the Negeri Besar Village in Way Kanan, which is a local wisdom that until now is still practiced by the local village community, even many outside visitors who take part in the ngababali tradition. The tradition of praying for something to the grave or sacred tomb with offerings and so on. The people believe what is intended and asked for beings who are not visible or given to those who have abundant assets to be given is always easy to get sustenance or ask to be kept away from distress or when getting a disaster. The purpose of this study is to describe the religious practices that are carried out in a tradition that is still thick in that society. Qualitative analysis methods are descriptive and to facilitate data retrieval using accidental sampling. The results of the analysis show that the community productively finally places the religion and tradition of ngababali together namely religion into a belief and tradition of ngababali into a practice and belief which is then placed in the social environment forming a belief and togetherness and directing a unity to keep religion as the the main. This proves that the traditional ngababali process continued to use the Islamization process eventhough the local culture served as a bridge to the trust of the local community so that it became a productive social form.

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools are religious institutions that not only teach religious problems to santri, but also relate to the role of porndok pesantren on community empowerment. Islamic boarding schools also have a role in national politics. In this context the role of the pesantren in dialogue and contextualizing Islamic teachings is not rigid and black and white. But Islamic boarding schools are able to display the teachings of Islam that are harmonious, peaceful, tolerant, and not radical. Islamic understanding initiated by Islamic boarding schools is far from the values of radical doctrines, or easy doctrine to state ‘heresy’ to other groups. This becomes the view and value championed by the pesantren community including the role of the Kiai (Islamic clergy) in developing modern and global life.

Abstract

This article discusses the politics of identity in dance representations. Lah Bako dance is one of the Jember icons that was created to build an image of the tobacco farmers' culture. This dance is performed by women who represent the tobacco production process. However, the practical needs that are framed through aesthetic motions present a new form of how women are positioned in agricultural societies. In this context, the Lah Bako dance becomes an instrument to create new meanings for women and also becomes an imaginary space for tobacco farming. The article discusses two main points: first, the Lah Bako dance became an integral part of government’s project to construct mass memories in the relations of production in the tobacco sector, and the second is women as subjects representing a farmer’s spirit which is formed as a new figuration that fluid and changeable as political image that transcended existing experimental conditions. An addition point highlighted in this article was the emergence of Islamic values in a dance version which is accomodated the elite interest of Jember’s identity slogan formation. Reseachers use Stuart Hall’s cultural representation and ethnography method to narrate the identity. This research found that the Lah Bako dance is constructed in dominant cultural formations that are legitimized by the structure of the regional government bureaucracy. Furthermore, it is crucial to criticize the space for voicing farmers’ subjectivity and class politics, which has been muddled from the elite network. The problem appears as a paradox for creating aesthetic reality through art, where the symbolic form can be enjoyed without touching inequality that continually arises.

Abstract

This study discussed the compliance of the coffee farmers particularly in Sumberwringin Bondowoso against the figure Amin Said Husni. The Regent concerns for the fate of the coffee farmers and public welfare in Bondowoso cannot be inseparable from the religious life of the Regent; implementing policies based on the principles of the Islamic religion. This study aimed to answer the question regarding the causes of the emergence of people’s compliance with coffee farmers to switch the Arabica coffee plant according to the instructions given by the Regent. This study applied the habitus concept developed by Pierre Bourdieu and sharpened using the historical method. The studied population was coffee farmers at district of Sumberwringin (Sukorejo, Rejoagung and Sumberwringin village). This study found that the compliance of the coffee farmers could attract people who originally planted Robusta switched to Arabica coffee as their Regent’s instruction. The compliance of coffee farming communities (majority of Madurese) was hierarchical obedience that became a necessity to be actualized in daily praxis as “normative” binding. The compliance of produce luck to economic conditions as well as improving the welfare of coffee farmers, because the selling price of Arabika is higher than the Robusta coffee.

Abstract

Banuroja is an acronym for “Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Gorontalo and Java”. From its naming identity, it appears that the community is heterogeneous both in terms of ethnicity, language, culture and religion. The heterogeneity of the people of Banuroja Village is actually an element that strengthens the harmony between them. There does not appear to be arrogance from followers of a particular religion, there is no excessive militancy, there is no intrigue to negate each other. This study shows that there are five aspects which are the key words of the Banuroja social harmony, namely (1) aspects of education and youth; (2) aspects of settlement and tradition; (3) aspects of work; (4) aspects of village government institutions; and (5) other aspects such as the prominent figures / religious elites. The driving aspects of integration on the one hand are actually at the same time a trigger for conflict on the other side. The author argues that the people of Banuroja have succeeded in showing that harmony is not just passive co-existence, not an artificial harmony. Living in diversity, in the context of Banuroja, actually being actualized by active co-existence in intimate friendship dissolves in the specialness of each rite without denouncing the other rites.

Abstract

Hikayah Wahabiyyah was banned (2013) in Saudi Arabia because it was considered to undermine the honor of religion, institutions and state stability. Hikāyah Wahabiyyah describes the struggle of the ideology of a Wahabi who wants to escape from a total domination (herrschaft) that has eliminated the freedom and clarity of modern human thinking. This study aims to reveal the struggle of a Wahabi jihadist as reflected through internal elements of the Hikayah Wahabiyah. To uncover this ideological struggle, I use the ideological criticism approach to the intrinsic elements of the novel. Based on the analysis results are summarized, that (1) the word “jihadis” in this novel is interpreted as a kinayah which has two meanings, haqiqi and majazi (real and figurative). The meaning of haqīqi is those who strive in jihad through the path of war, while the meaning of the majazi is those who strive to maintain their ideological beliefs. (2) the intrinsic elements of literature built by the author in general illustrate the ideological struggle of a mutadayyin (follower of the Wahhabi ideology) who turns into a muntakis (someone who escapes from Wahabi ideology).
