KARSA is a peer-reviewed national journal published by Institut Agama Islam Negeri Madura. It has been nationally accredited SINTA 2 since 2017 by Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education of Republic Indonesia. It is published twice a year (June and December). It publishes articles of research results, applied theory studies, social issues, cultural studies, and Islamic culture issues. The aim of KARSA is to disseminate cutting-edge research that explores the interrelationship between social studies and (including) culture. The journal has scope and seeks to provide a forum for researchers interested in the interaction between social and cultural aspects across several disciplines. The journal publishes quality, original and state-of-the-art articles that may be theoretical or empirical in orientation and that advance our understanding of the intricate relationship between social science and culture. KARSA accepts manuscript with a different kind of languages are Indonesian, English, Arabic, or French.

Abstract

The Ontalan tradition is a Maduranese tradition of throwing money to the bride and groom at the bridal events, which its people still preserve. The Ontalan practice is unique in its implementation because it only involves the groom’s family, relatives, and bhle. In contrast, the bride is not obligated to carry it out. Research was included in empirical legal research, namely studying and analyzing legal behavior, both individuals and society. The research method used by the researcher was qualitative. This research intended to understand the phenomena experienced by describing them in words and language in a particular natural context using various scientific methods. As empirical legal research, the approach used by researchers is a socio-legal approach. This research showed that Ontalan was first carried out at the groom’s house at the time of the bridal events, one day after its events. The groom’s family and relatives carried out the parties. The money given is not thrown away but is delivered using an envelope. Second, they carry out Ontalan to continue their ancestral heritage, help the bride and groom, reject lousy luck, and strengthen friendship because it does not conflict with religion. The benefits of implementing Ontalan were to create a spirit of social care through giving alms, bringing family relationships closer, strengthening ties, and making an equal household; those who do not implement Ontalan will receive social sanctions. Third, religion and culture are interrelated from the sociological perspective of Islamic law. The term Ontalan is a social definition because the actual social fact of Ontalan is a gift that, in its implementation, aims to create social change through efforts to help the bride and groom build harmonious and equal family relationships. Using the ‘Urf theory, the Ontalan tradition is included in ‘urf shahih because it does not conflict with sharia, benefits the practitioners, and contains religious values.

Abstract

This research was conducted to find the value of humanism in the distribution of Ponggol in the earth alms tradition in Keramat Bumiayu Village, Brebes. The aim is that these values ​​can become a guide to life for the community, especially the younger generation, as preparation for becoming entirely social human beings and continuing to carry out the tradition of giving charity to the Earth. This research uses a qualitative method with a narrative approach and uses content analysis techniques from Milles and Huberman. The study obtained historical data regarding traditions and implementation, processions, and humanistic values ​​in the Ponggol distribution procession in the earth alms tradition at the Keramat Temple, Brebes Regency. In the ponggol distribution procession, there are human values, namely the value of cooperation, the value of being willing to sacrifice, the importance of caring for others, the value of helping each other, and the value of solidarity.

Abstract

Islamic philanthropic organizations have been the people’s choice to distribute Zakat, Infaq, and Shadaqah. However, only a few realize that public relations is essential to maintaining relationships with audiences. NU Care LAZISNU East Java implements a public relations strategy to maintain public trust. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of public relations concepts in the Islamic philanthropic institution of NU Care LAZISNU, East Java. NU Care LAZISNU East Java, with various excellent programs, tries to build and maintain public trust as an institution that collects people’s funds and carries out a humanitarian mission. Thus, this research wants to examine further characteristics of public relations in Islamic philanthropic institutions to get a positive branding image. The method used qualitative research through interview techniques, observation, and documentation from NU Care LAZISNU, Scientific and Practical Basics of Islamic Communication East Java. The theory used to analyze is relationship management. The study results show that implementing public relations in the Islamic philanthropic institution at NU Care LAZISNU, East Java, is based on ethics, credibility, openness, trust, involvement, and mutual benefit principles. It is because this institution’s policies, activities, and programs are closely related to Islamic teachings in the form of the implementation of Zakat, Infaq, and Shadaqah. The public relations strategies are institutional identity, community involvement, publications, and events.

Abstract

Historical and religious sites are developing into tourist attractions. Tourist perception is interpreted as one way to determine visitor satisfaction, can advance the improvement of tourist attractions, and is a driver for revisit intentions. This study aims to explore the views of tourists regarding the meaning of the religious and historical as a tourist attraction, the pattern of visitor density in the tourist area of the Great Mosque of Demak, and to identify the perception of tourists about facilities, and revisit the intention of the Demak Great Mosque. The photovoice method is used to answer the meaning of Demak Great Mosque visitors from November to December 2022. The participants in the photovoice method were 12. The second method is the descriptive quantitative to answer objectives 2 and 3. The sample of this study was 104 respondents. All the tourist respondents collected multistage sampling. The results of this study indicate that the Demak Great Mosque is an attraction for historical, religious and educational tourism. In the tourist object area, the Great Mosque of Demak has the highest density in the high and low seasons. Tourist perceptions of the quality of religious and non-religious facilities. This means that the Great Mosque of Demak already has a capacity for facilities that satisfy visitors. The mosque's architecture attracted the majority of tourists and least of all, they consider the lack of shelter from the hot sun. The intention of visitors to return to the Great Mosque of Demak is 89.42%.

Abstract

This study analyzes the effect of the role of the head of the community health center on community satisfaction at UPT Puskesmas Ujung Gading, West Pasaman Regency. Community satisfaction is a function of performance impressions and expectations. If performance is below community expectations, the community feels impressed and dissatisfied. Conversely, if performance meets community expectations, the community will feel happy and satisfied. However, many people still complain about the services provided by the UPT Puskesmas Ujung Gading. This study will analyze the effect of internal roles on community satisfaction at UPT Puskesmas Ujung Gading, West Pasaman Regency, investigate the impact of external positions on community satisfaction at UPT Puskesmas Ujung Gading, West Pasaman Regency, and the effect of internal roles and external roles on community satisfaction at UPT Puskesmas Ujung Gading, West Pasaman Regency. This research will use a quantitative approach with multiple regression analysis techniques to discover these realities. Based on the analysis results, it was found that the internal role has a significant effect on community satisfaction with an Adjusted R Square table value of 0.090, which is 9%, and for a substantial deal of 0.000. External roles considerably affect community satisfaction with an Adjusted R Square table value of 0.058, 5.8%, and for a significant deal of 0.000. Internal and external functions have a positive and significant effect on community satisfaction with an Adjusted R Square table value of 0.150,

Abstract

The background of polygamy in Indonesia involves complexity in protecting women, especially economic, social, and psychological disparities. The practice of polygamy reflects the uncertainty of marriage and divorce regulations, giving rise to negative impacts on women and children, including conflict and domestic violence. The protection of women requires legal reform, an educational approach, and active community involvement to overcome injustice in the practice of polygamy. This research aims to understand the phenomenon of women's protection in the context of polygamy in Indonesia with a focus on the city of Padang. Primary data was collected through interviews and observations using qualitative descriptive methods, while secondary data from various literature reviews was analyzed using data description and conclusion-drawing techniques. Women who are polygamous face verbal, nonverbal, and physical pressure. Even though there are religious and legal regulations, the effectiveness of sanctions in Indonesia is still low. Solutions include education, unconditional denial of consent, and legal protection, while spiritual experts face challenges resulting from societal misunderstanding and intimidation from prospective husbands.

Abstract

One of the traditions still preserved on the island of Lombok is the tradition of using Berugaq as a place to study or recite the Koran. Berugaq is a place to receive guests, family deliberations, a place for worship, and even a place for learning and discussion to provoke and motivate residents to learn the Quran and Tafsir. Berugaq is an alternative because, in addition to a comfortable position, Berugaq is an alternative. After all, in addition to a comfortable home and being in the open air. Berugak is also made a gathering place that symbolizes kinship. In Berugaq, the Al-Qur’an is submitted as an interpretation of religious attitudes because Berugaq is considered comfortable and can motivate residents to participate in learning the Al-Qur’an and its performance. Explanations of Al-Qur’an verses are primarily done in mosques and schools, never in Berugaq or Langgar, which makes the researcher interested in this study. Teaching methods of interpreting the Al-Qur’an by explaining the content of the verses of the Al-Qur’an with discussion and question and answer. The method used in this research is a qualitative research method descriptive analytical approach by applying a systematic, directed, and accountable way of working. With the learning model in Berugaq, community members are motivated to learn the Al-Qur’an because they consider Berugaq to be a comfortable and attractive place where more and more people, both youth and children who participate in learning the Qur’an so that the traditional learning in Berugaq is a tradition that needs to be developed and preserved.

Abstract

This research explores the verbal and symbolic aggression of Madurese women students. These two things will be examined as the leading models by looking at the oral and symbolic aggression models for Madurese women. Women’s aggression is a complex form of behavior. This complexity is essential to the cyclical activities of the self and its environment. Madurese women ‘do not have a voice’ in voicing their own opinions including in rural electoral power politics and household economic autonomy. This research uses mixed methods, quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative research uses statistical analysis using confirmatory factorial analysis (CFA), while qualitative research uses descriptive data about the types and forms of verbal aggression in women. Both explore verbal and symbolic tendencies of aggression in Madurese women. The women involved were students at universities in Madura. The research results show that women prefer symbolic aggression to verbal aggression. Women with higher education prefer symbolic aggression to verbal aggression. Types and forms of verbal aggression include cha’-nguca’e, hitting, pulling, harming, and injuring. This oral does not lead to the loss of another person's life. Another finding is that a symbolic attack always follows every verbal aggression. Meanwhile, symbolic aggression involves gossip, talking about bad things about other women with slander and backbiting, spitting on other people’s property rights, inviting other people to hate other women, constantly talking about other people’s bad things, looking for reasons to hate other people, not coming meeting with hated people.

Abstract

This research reviews the child protection paradigm in the Indo-Pacific region, especially in Indonesia, by highlighting the imbalance between the status of developed countries and the need to develop thinking and implementation of Islamic law. The research results show that understanding of Islamic law regarding child protection is in line with human rights principles and the Child Protection Law. Factors influencing child trafficking involve the social and economic conditions of countries, while movements, interactions, and changes in child trafficking systems reflect the complexity of this problem. Child protection agencies highlight the mode of child trafficking through online channels and loose borders, with the main obstacles being differences in levels of understanding and lack of coordination between countries. Parents emphasized education, the role of the community in prevention, personal experiences related to concerns about children's safety, and participation in children's education. Parents' hopes include strengthening legal and policy frameworks involving cultural values and Islamic law, as well as community support for more effective prevention efforts. In conclusion, this research provides critical insight into the role of Islamic law and cooperation between government and society in protecting children from trafficking in the Indo-Pacific region.

Abstract

The spirit of social care is an ethical demand, and religious values ​​must be practised. It implies that religious orientation involves the individual’s relationship with God (spiritual purity) and the way the individual interacts with other people (social piety). They range from criminal cases such as murder and rape to legal cases such as corruption and discrimination, to religious conflicts and terrorism. It indicates that religious communities are starting to lose their ethical dynamics. This research aims to describe the level of social piety of the people of Sumenep, focusing on the value of social stability, social solidarity, and cooperation. This research uses mixed methods. Data analysis involved 310 respondents in the productive age category (aged 15-64 years) spread across 27 sub-districts. Purposive sampling was used to determine the sample of respondents. Data collection was carried out through surveys using questionnaires, which also involved observation techniques and interviews as support. The results of the research show that the people of Sumenep obtained a perfect social piety index score (with a cumulative score of 83.36), including aspects of the social stability index of 84.71 (very good), the social solidarity index of 78.01 (good), and cooperation index 87.35 (very good). The achievement of the social piety index with a value of 83.36 in the very good category shows that the people of Sumenep have achieved a very good level of social harmonization.
