Abstract

Applying STEAM-based learning methods is challenging for early childhood (EC) educators because most of them need help to develop media and learning activities. This study aims to improve EC teachers' proficiency in implementing STEAM learning methods with loose-part materials through project-based learning (PjBL) models. This action research uses the Elliot model, which consists of 7 steps: initial idea identification, fact analysis, general planning, implementation, observation, evaluation, and idea improvement. The participants in this study were 15 preschool teachers from different institutions in Langsa, Aceh. Data collection techniques used observation and the instruments consisted of observation sheets and project assessment sheets. The results showed that the average score of teacher competence in cycles one and two increased. 80% of the total 15 teachers have reached the minimum success indicator. Therefore, the PjBL method is concluded to improve the competence of EC teachers in implementing STEAM method learning with loose parts. From the results of this study, it is hoped that teachers can apply it in their respective institutions to provide more comprehensive benefits to students. This study suggests that early childhood institutions should help EC teachers implement the STEAM-based loose parts. Further research can be conducted in ECE on the extend of STEAM implementation.

Abstract

The use of gadgets is increasingly prevalent among preschool children, especially in today's digital era. The use of gadgets by preschool children often raises pros and cons among parents and educators, regarding its positive and negative impacts on child development. This type of research is "ex post facto" because it will capture events that have occurred and that contribute to and do not provide treatment to research subjects. The purpose of this study is to examine how much influence digital literacy and socioeconomic status together and individually have on parents' perceptions of gadget use by preschool children in Borongloe Village. Researchers use a non-experimental quantitative approach because it emphasizes objective phenomena and is studied quantitatively. The population in this study were parents who have preschool children in Borongloe Village. Sampling in this study was a saturated sample method where all populations were sampled in the survey which amounted to 55 parents. The results of the study were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods, assumption tests, regression tests, t-tests, and F tests. The results of this study explain that digital literacy and socioeconomic status have a positive and significant effect on parents' perceptions of gadget use in preschool children with a significance value of 0.005;0.001 and 0.000<0.05, respectively.

Abstract

This study investigates the roles of teachers in implementing sex education in Indonesian playgroups, focusing on their opinions, experiences, and methods. The research addresses the psychological effects of child sexual abuse and emphasizes the need for preventative measures through early education. Utilizing a qualitative approach, interviews were conducted with 13 teachers from various playgroups in Ciputat, Indonesia, and analyzed using Colaizzi’s method. The findings highlight two main themes: teachers' recognition of the importance of sex education and their practical experiences in implementing it. Most teachers agreed on the necessity of early sex education to promote awareness and protection against sexual violence. However, their understanding of the subject varied, with many expressing discomfort discussing sensitive topics. Teaching methods ranged from storytelling to demonstrations, but materials addressing reproductive organs were rarely included. The study underscores the importance of collaboration between teachers and parents to align educational goals. The findings contribute to the broader discourse on integrating comprehensive sex education into early childhood curricula, offering practical insights for policymakers and educators. Future research should explore the scalability of these approaches and their long-term impact on children’s safety and well-being.

Abstract

The To optimize children's art development in art learning activities, teachers must have the right strategy. Therefore, it is not only the right techniques and resources that are needed to enhance children's art development. The teacher's method of preparing for learning, as well as methods, media, and other elements, greatly affect the child's learning process. The purpose of this study is to provide an explanation of the methods teachers use to make art learning fun for students in kindergarten. The research was conducted in one month, during April 2024. The location of this research was conducted in one of the PAUD in Yogyakarta, namely Jabal rahmah PAUD. This qualitative descriptive study was designed as a case study. Data collection involved observation, documentation, and interviews. Presenting data, reducing data, and drawing conclusions were part of the data analysis conducted using the Miles Huberman model. The discussion of art learning strategies in early childhood at Jabal Rahmah PAUD shows that these strategies are quite different: direct and collaborative learning strategies with group and centre models proved to be fun and improved children's art skills. based on this, children are used to working together and are confident in their respective fields. in addition, teachers use art learning as part of teaching and learning activities, while extracurricular teachers conduct art form activities such as music, fine arts and dance. This is due to the difference between classroom teachers and teachers who teach outside the classroom, who have greater professional experience gained through arts education.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of socioeconomic status on executive function in Kindergarten children (Group B) in the DKI Jakarta Province in 2024. Using a quantitative causal associative approach with a survey method and path analysis technique, this research involved 102 students selected through multistage cluster random sampling. Data were collected using a modified BRIEF-P instrument to measure executive function and a questionnaire to assess socioeconomic status. The results indicate a significant favorable influence of socioeconomic status on children's executive function (path coefficient 0.358, t-value 5.47). Children with higher socioeconomic status tend to have better executive functions. These findings highlight the importance of interventions to improve executive function, particularly for children from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, to support their future academic success. This research provides valuable insights for developing more inclusive and equitable early childhood education policies.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the understanding, planning, implementation, and evaluation of science learning carried out by early childhood education teachers, as well as identify the challenges faced and the solutions implemented. Using a qualitative approach, data was obtained through in-depth interviews with six teachers from various early childhood education institutions. Data analysis was carried out thematically by linking the research results to pedagogic theory and empirical context. The results of the study show that teachers have a diverse understanding of the concept of science, which is generally seen as a science to foster curiosity and critical thinking skills in children. In lesson planning, teachers use themes relevant to children's lives and develop exploration-based activities using simple tools and materials. The implementation of learning is carried out through hands-on experiments, demonstrations, and exploration-based projects designed to make science learning fun and meaningful. Evaluation of learning success focuses on children's enthusiasm, active participation, and understanding of science concepts. However, teachers face a variety of challenges, including limited tools and materials, limited learning time, and a variety of children's abilities. Creative solutions such as the use of local resources and additional motivation to children are often applied to overcome these obstacles. This research emphasizes the importance of science learning in early childhood education in supporting children's cognitive, social, and emotional development, as well as the need for institutional support in the form of training and the provision of resources to improve teaching effectiveness.
