Abstract

History learning in Vocational High Schools (SMK Dinamika Pembangunan 2 Jakarta) faces challenges, including low student motivation and comprehension. These challenges stem from the perception that history is a difficult subject and the limited time available for delivering materials. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Indonesia’s history learning program by developing the History Infographic book as a learning resource. The research method used is Design-Based Research (DBR) with the Reeves model, which includes problem identification, design, implementation, and feasibility testing by education experts. The results indicate that the History Infographic book, specifically designed for the topic of the Japanese occupation in Indonesia, serves as an effective and engaging learning resource for 11th-grade vocational students. Infographics have proven to present information visually in a more appealing manner, aiding students in processing information and enhancing their understanding of complex historical materials. Therefore, this History Infographic book is considered suitable for use as a learning medium that supports students’ comprehension and motivation in history subjects in Vocational High Schools, in line with the applicable curriculum.

Abstract

Trachoma is an infectious disease of the eye that can cause serious problems, such as decreased visual acuity and early blindness. Trachoma is known as the disease of the poor, which is suffered mainly by poor people who live in unhygienic environments. As we know, from 1910 to 1934, trachoma experienced a high spike in Jombang due to structural poverty. Furthermore, this article aims to reveal how the poor in Jombang, who did not have the funds to improve their health, were exposed to trachoma from 1910-1935. Based on archival findings and in-depth investigations, this research shows that since the beginning of the 20th century, many small Bumiputra residents in Jombang, such as landless farmers and coolies in private companies, have experienced what is called structural poverty. This structural poverty also caused economic decline and poor health stability. Under such conditions, many of them eventually contracted the dangerous trachoma disease. In response to the disease, the Dutch colonial government brought in Javanese doctors and Javanese eye doctors to entice the poor population to seek treatment at the Mojowarno Christian Hospital in Jombang through Western medicine methods.

Abstract

The use of museums as a medium for evaluating history learning plays a strategic role in improving the quality of the learning process while sharpening students' critical thinking skills. This study aims to evaluate history learning at the Learning Museum of Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), focusing on optimizing the museum’s role in supporting students' critical thinking abilities. A qualitative approach with a participatory design was employed, involving museum administrators, lecturers, and history students as key participants. Primary data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews, while secondary data were obtained from literature studies, documentation, and museum archives. Data analysis was conducted thematically through the stages of data reduction, display, and verification to ensure the validity of the findings. The results indicate that the application of a participatory approach in history learning at the museum significantly enhances student engagement, strengthens critical and reflective thinking skills, and fosters a deeper understanding of historical material. Students not only function as recipients of information but also actively engage in discussing historical contexts and reflecting on the relevance of historical values in contemporary life. Furthermore, the museum has proven to be an effective medium for authentic, contextual, and enjoyable learning evaluation, capable of bridging the gap between theory and practice. This study contributes to the literature on museums as a medium for participatory learning and critical thinking in history education. The findings also provide practical recommendations for museum administrators and educators in designing innovative history learning programs. More broadly, this research may serve as a reference for developing museum-based history learning strategies in Indonesia and at the international level.

Abstract

One of Indonesia's cultural heritages that deserves to be preserved is the art of weaving, which symbolizes identity and local wisdom, especially among the Sasak tribe in Lombok. Weaving is not just a skill, but also rich in cultural and spiritual values. For Sasak women, weaving skills are even an important requirement in marriage. The weaving tradition in Pringgasela Village, East Lombok, faces significant challenges in its preservation. Changes in lifestyle toward modernization, a lack of regeneration among the younger generation, and low income from weaving products have led to a decline in interest in the art of weaving. This study aims to explore the role of Sasak women in preserving and passing down the weaving tradition as part of Sasak cultural education. The research findings indicate that while there are groups of women who remain committed to preserving this tradition, external factors such as modernization and competition from industrial products are affecting the sustainability of the weaving tradition. Therefore, support from the government and society is needed to preserve and maintain the art of weaving so that it remains an integral part of Indonesia's cultural identity.

Abstract

Muaro Jambi Temples is the largest cultural heritage site in Southeast Asia, holding immense historical and cultural potential. However, the low number of visitors and limited engagement from the younger generation indicate the need for innovative approaches to promote the site. This research aims to develop a strategy for applying the ornamental sculptures of Muaro Jambi Temples to traditional textiles as a medium to introduce  and  promote Jambi’s cultural heritage. The ornaments selected include sculptures of Prajnaparamita, Dwarapala, Makara, and motifs from the main temples such as Candi Tinggi, Candi Gumpung, and Candi Gedong. The research method employed is research and development (R&D) using a design thinking approach, which involves the stages of empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test to create motifs that preserve cultural authenticity while being suitable for textile application.  The process includes interviews with artisans, observation of traditional textile production, analysis of key challenges, brainstorming of simplified ornamental designs, prototype development, and phase evaluation with artisan and the local community. The resulting fabric prototype featuring ornamental motifs was tested during a cultural event at Muaro Jambi Temple and received positive feedback from visitors as an effective medium for introducing the history and cultural heritage of Jambi. This  study demonstrates that the application of sculptural ornaments to traditional textiles not only enhances the aesthetic value of the product but also reinforces cultural identity and increases public interest in Jambi heritage. Government support and stronger collaboration with local artisan communities are crucial to ensure that these ornament inspired textiles become a widely recognized and sustainable cultural symbol.

Abstract

Gamolan is a musical instrument made of bamboo that is played by beating so that it produces tones. The tones are distinguished by notes or scales. Gamolan comes from the word begamol, the word begamol in Lampung language is the same as the word begumul in Malay language which means gathering. The research “Cultural Preservation of Gamolan Musical Instruments through the Creation of Gamolan Sakti Songs” aims to explore how traditional songs can be used as a tool to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of Gamolan musical instruments in Lampung. The song created by Hasyim Kan combines traditional elements with modern musical innovations. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method. This research uses the theory of Anthropology from Koentjaraningrat with the Culture Knowlade approach and is conducted at the University of Lampung and Hasyim Kan as the main source. The main sources are observation of the process of playing Gamolan musical instruments, learning Gamolan Sakti songs performed by Hasyim Kan, literature studies in libraries, books, national journals and other literature. The results showed that the Gamolan Sakti song has had a positive impact on the youth community in Lampung, especially in strengthening their cultural identity as Lampung people and increasing their pride in local cultural heritage. The song has helped the younger generation develop interest and experience in playing Gamolan musical instruments, as well as raising awareness and appreciation of Gamolan culture in Lampung. Despite the challenges in preserving Gamolan music culture, “Gamolan Sakti” has successfully overcome these challenges and made an impact on the youth community in Lampung. This researcher hopes that the Gamolan musical instrument from Lampung will not be lost in the modern era and will continue to be appreciated and loved by future generations.
