Abstract

The community service program was carried out to provide education and training in making herbal soap products in Puasana Village, North Moramo District, South Konawe Regency. The Community Service activities aimed to provide knowledge for the community and skill processing by utilizing local natural ingredients to maintain health. The method used in carrying out this community service program is providing counselling regarding the properties of local medicinal plants as well as providing training in making herbal soap products from sago flour. This community service was accomplished by educating the target audience through presentations and providing training on how to make soap by demonstrating directly how to make soap from local, natural ingredients and how to package and label it. Instant herbal soap was formulated with base soap, sago flour, and oleum rosae fragrance (rose oil). Specific targets to be achieved are skill processing local natural ingredients into traditional cosmetic preparations as well as motivating the public to always maintain a healthy body. The implementation of education through counselling and making herbal soap as one of the community service programs carried out in Puasana Village has been carried out well and received good and inspiring responses. Counseling on the use of medicinal plants to be used as ingredients for making soap as well as the training provided hopefully will provide sustainable benefits to the Puasana Village community to increase their knowledge and skills in the use of nutritious plants.

Abstract

Fish farming is a type of fishing that involves cultivating various fish on land. Fish farming success can be influenced by site characteristics, water quality, fish suitability, and care. Crystal guava processing is a production utilization innovation. This has the potential to raise the value of crystal guava commodities, which can be consumed directly but are also processed into various derivative products. The community groups will be divided into two foster groups: the MSME group that makes crystal guava jam and the foster group that grows fish in irrigation ponds. This empowerment approach involves the creation of supporting infrastructure such as ponds in irrigation canals and the production of crystal guava jam. Then, using the t-test on the dependent mean and Principal Component Analysis, integrated training was carried out, including socializing and field practice, to quantify statistical development in abilities. As a result, the target community's understanding has increased. The target group (community) can increase their abilities in fish cultivation, the production of novel products (commodity derivatives), and marketing across various phases with the creation of supporting infrastructure.

Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a severe impact on people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and their health behaviors. This study investigated the associations between T2D status and mask- wearing behaviors in public settings during the first wave of COVID-19 among community residents in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Outreach health checkups and self-report questionnaires were cross-sectionally conducted to measure mask- wearing behavior, T2D status, and sociodemographic characteristics. Chi- square tests and bivariate and multivariate logistic regression were performed for data analysis. Out of 254 participants, nearly one-fourth (24%) were newly diagnosed with T2D, while 15% reported that they had never been diagnosed with T2D before. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression models had no statistically significant associations between mask-wearing behavior and T2D status. However, Chi-square test results showed significant differences (P=0.02) in percentages of inconsistent mask-wearing behavior among those who were newly diagnosed with T2D (19%), those who had known as T2D (8%), and those who had no T2D (7%). Early diagnostic services and awareness education for T2D are imperative to reduce the disease severity and mortality for future pandemics, particularly among undiagnosed individuals who are unaware of their T2D status.

Abstract

Healthcare is one of the critical elements of infection prevention and control, one of which can be done by maintaining hand hygiene. Hand washing with soap and flowing water has long been considered a parameter of personal hygiene and is a simple way to reduce the transmission of infections, especially those caused by hand contact between individuals. However, it must still be done by paying attention to the time and the correct way to wash hands according to WHO standards. At this time, various hand soap products have emerged but are not antibacterial. Antibacterial ingredients used as soap base should not contain various kinds of chemicals that are harmful to the health of its users. Therefore, the use of natural ingredients can be an alternative to substitute chemical active substances. One that has been tested for its antibacterial properties is hibiscus flower (Hibiscus rosa sinensis L.). This activity began with presenting the results of the screening on hand washing habits carried out 2 weeks earlier. The next activity is the introduction to making antibacterial hand soap made from hibiscus extract through material presentation and empirical evidence of the potential of hibiscus as an antibacterial, as well as videos about the importance of maintaining hand hygiene through proper hand washing regularly. The activity is expected to make the healthcare UMKM know and understand that hibiscus flowers, which are widely available around their residence, can be used as raw material for making hand soap that has been produced so far, so as to minimize the use of chemical-based antibacterials. The hand soap product produced later became a collaborative product produced by the community, and then registered a patent with the number S00202120213 on November 17th, 2021.

Abstract

Childhood is a continuous process of growth and development. Every parent hopes that their child will grow and develop optimally. To meet these expectations, regular growth and development monitoring are required. In support of this, the Indonesian Ministry of Health provides expectant mothers with the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) book, containing comprehensive guidance on maternal and child health. The present health education program aimed to assess the adequacy of MCH book and its practical application. Health workers (n=50) and mothers (n=50) received guidance on using the MCH book and the importance of taking anthropometric measurements to monitor growth in early childhood. Forty-one mother and toddler pairs participated in the MCH book assessment using a validated and reliable questionnaire. Also, they participated in child health consultations and growth monitoring via anthropometric measurements. Categorical data were expressed as proportions, while factors associated with the completeness of the MCH book were analyzed using the chi-square test. Ten toddlers did not have an MCH book, while 18 (58.1%) had a book with a low level of completion. No statistically significant factors influencing the completeness of MCH books were identified. Within the MCH books, growth and immunization charts were most likely to be completed. During the program, we explained that mothers are encouraged to read the MCH book and can enter measurements themselves so that their children’s growth and development are well documented. After the education and assessment sessions, mothers and health workers were aware of which pages of the MCH book should be completed when toddlers are brought to health facilities, whether healthy or symptomatic. This health education program benefited health workers and mothers as it improved their knowledge and ability to use and complete MCH books for monitoring children’s growth and development.

Abstract

The community of Merangin Village, Kampar Regency, predominantly relies on fish farming for sustenance and has been facing notable challenges in cultivation, particularly concerning the costly factory-made pellets, which constitute a significant portion of production expenses. To address this, an alternative solution was autonomous fish pellet production using locally abundant palm kernel waste. Despite this, many community members lacked understanding of the production process and raw material processing. Through a community service program at the University of Riau, targeted technology transfer efforts aimed to empower residents to produce fish pellets independently. The program focused on enhancing knowledge through comprehensive guidance on pellet production. The implementation of this program was expected to enable Merangin Village residents to manufacture their own fish pellets, potentially enhancing income and fostering a sustainable fish farming venture. The implications of the program included optimized palm waste utilization, reduced production costs, increased income, and effective waste management. A locally designed fish pellet machine, boosting a production capacity of up to 50 kg/hour, facilitated community to control over production and reduced dependence on costly commercial options. The pellet formula integrated locally available ingredients such as bran, palm kernel cake, tofu dregs, fish waste, and kiambang. Educational campaigns and practical training sessions equipped fish farmers with the skills to operate the pellet machine, formulate recipes, and manage production effectively, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development of Merangin Village and other communities.
